I'm usually a little skeptical of anthologies that have fairly narrow themes, as the contents of them tend to get a little repetitive. So I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed this one (a collection of urban legends being retold as first encounter with alien stories). As with any anthology, there were a few stories I didn't care for, but most of them were really well done and had more variety than I had expected. Close Encounters of the Urban Kind
The theme of this anthology is to use an urban legend—either something well-known, something made up, or something local to a particular region—and give it an alien twist or alien explanation. In other words, involve aliens in some way. I was invited to participate in the anthology and had fun writing my own version of that theme. In Close Encounters of the Urban Kind, editor Jennifer Brozek has put together a collection of short stories in which urban legends are explained by alien encounters. The level of explanation varies, as do the types of aliens involved. Many of the urban legends used as inspiration for the tales are well-known, others are local phenomena, while some are new legends created by the authors. The theme behind all these stories are encounters with aliens in urban (or semi-urban) environments, based on (or inspired by)urban legends.(see? the title is pretty descriptive).
Alas, the stories range in quality. Some are very dull and unimaginative, others are just ok, and there are some that are quite readable.

A great, suspenseful exploration of the boundaries of our world. The drag races story gave me shivers, while Nathan Crowder's usual strength shines through in a fascinating, hair-raising story.
