Engle tells the story of half-siblings, one born in the u.s. and one born in cuba. A tale of diaspora, family and cuban/castro repression, it is a sentimental narrative (that recognizes itself as such... indeed the author seems to dismiss herself on occasion having the narrator's missing brother accuse his sister of all the things the author is guilty of --- lack of perspective, romanticizing pain & imprisonment, deep set self-involvement).
