by
Lilith Saintcrow (Goodreads Author)
Necromancer. Bounty hunter. Killer.
Dante Valentine has been all three in her life. But in the beginning, she was a Necromancer for hire. And while she was choosy about her jobs, there were just some she couldn't turn down. Like when the Devil showed up at the door and offered her a deal. Her life - in exchange for the capture and elimination of a renegade demon. But how do...more

I must've liked it because I read the whole thing. But I don't know why. I think the moral of the story is "If Lucifer comes knocking on your door, turn the lights out and hide, just like when you run out of Halloween candy" The story itself was very good and interesting, but the characters were annoying. I liked Gabe, Eddie and Jace, although he was a bit of an ass, but redeemed himself. Our Heroine Dante was a self centered, whiny, pain in the butt. I know she had a issues in school and woo-wo...more

Not a bad series and the fact that you can purchase the whole series for a little more then the price of one book is what promted me to give it a try. It starts off great the first two stories were the best but I found it got a little dull after that. Dante starts off as a strong female lead but as the series progressed I found I liked her less and less. Japh the demon love intrest was a great character but he was the reason I found Dante more and more anoying towards the end all she did was whi...more
Woah...just woah. I don't know what to write. I really didn't expect most of the things that happend. And especially the end. It's so raw and heartwrenching, and you literally feel exactly what the protagonist feels. It leaves you with the same empty numbness, Dante feels. And there are not many authors, who are able to pull something like this off.
Also a plus: it's not your typical Urban Fantasy story with lots of clichées and meaningless romance (not that I enjoy those storys too, from time to...more

Working for the devil - I thought this started out a bit slow and took a few chapters to get going, but obviously the author has to set the scene etc. I find that some of the reading is a bit heavy going as there are a lot of phrases and words the author uses pertaining to the world she has created for the story, but she does not always explain what the things are! It is, however a very imaginative work, and something very different to the paranormal stuff I have read before. As for the characte...more
I am finding there is a lot of information repeated throughout the book. Even when you read books from 1- 5 information is repeated between each book, I understand the concept of doing this, but I am talking about when ever valentine gets new gear for example she will explain the voltage on the plasguns (every time). This is just one example there are many more incidents like this throughout the book, and it is tiresome to read over and over again......
Other than what is written above I like t...more
Book 1:
It took me a while to settle into the book, but once I'd cottoned on to the world in the book, I started to really enjoy it.
4/5.
Book 2:
I found the first half of the second book very repetitive, yet at the same time, it fitted in with the main character and what she was feeling. I dis want to tell her to get on with it a couple of times, though...
All in all, I enjoyed the book, although I'm not sure if the ending was meant to be a surprise or not - it wasn't to me.

I was given this book by my mom, and I really liked it when I first began it, however about halfway through I had to put it down and stop reading it for a bit. I understand Dante would have trust issues, given her past, but I was fairly disappointed that she hadn't gotten past them by the third book, at least where Japhrimel was concerned.
As for the setting, I really like it. It sort of reminds me of J.D. Robb's version of New York in her "In Death" series. I also really enjoy the idea of magic...more

This was a reread for me. I've read and enjoyed the books previously, but that did not diminish my enjoyment of them. I am very glad that I took advantage of the deal to get the entire collection in one book.
Lilith's stories tend to be full of characters that engage my attention and curiosity and her world building is rich with detail.
The one criticism that I might make is more one of personailty rather than a technicality of writing. That is, I found that Dante's constant doubt of Japh rubbed m...more

The first two books--fantastic. They took a serious downward spiral in the third, and I flat couldn't finish them. Dante went from an ass-kicking bounty hunter to a whiny brat somewhere between books 2 and 3, and after one character (who shall remain nameless) tells her those four fatal words for every powerful female protagonist (For Your Own Good) and she AGREES, that was pretty much it for me. Also, Japh CONSTANTLY keeping secrets really annoyed the hell out of me.

The concept of the series was good, but the characters were really disappointing. There were so many times were I just wanted to toss the books aside because the main character, Dante, was just over emotional to the point of stupidity. Some characters can still be good or decent characters by being emotionally over bearing in some situations, but in these particular novels, Dante as an emotional unstable human/demon/bounty hunter didn't work in the least bit. She was constantly making just down...more

When?
A 1285 page book - an omnibus of five different novels. When did I find out when the novel took place? In the author's afterward. Page 1278.
By the slaughtering of place names, culture names, and religious names, I knew it took place in "the future", but I was guessing 50-100 years. It was 600.
Where?
Back to the slaughtered place names. As a result of fragmented "that kinda sounds like" names, I didn't really have a sense of where we were in the world for most of the book. Talking about the...more

All books were good and kept me at the edge of my seat. Dante has been to hell in back throughout all books and has to deal with a lot of loss and traumatic events. Japh who is a demon and windes up becoming a fallen demon because he falls in love with Dante makes the book even more exciting because throughout the entire series Dante is at war with herself on wether or not to trust him, which in my opinion is ridicules because he's a demon and really doesn't know emotion all the well but knows e...more
This series was a complete let down. When I read the desciption I thought it was going to be great! I still think it had great potential. I loved the characters and the story line, but it was SO repetitive and I thought many events were irrelevant. I found myself skipping page after page thinking, "WHAT HAPPENS ALREADY!" In truth, I skimmed through the last book just to find out how it ended. I know that I am not an expert in literature or writing, but in my opinion, it could have been written b...more
This was my second time reading this. I had enjoyed the first two books the first time around. Later in this series, Dante Valentine's character got a bit more emo and whiny than I can ignore so it impacted my enjoyment. It's a great world and a great premise for urban fantasy, but the romance aspect of the books aren't jelling for me. It's a little too much Twilight and it takes away from the strong character I was hoping Valentine to be.
That said, it's not a bad read by any means. The writing...more

I really enjoyed this mammoth book. I cried, a lot, and laughed too. But mostly I wanted to shake and slap silly Dante. Having said that I still was riveted to the story and Danny's descent into the hell her life becomes. The fact she is not all rosy and better at the end makes the story all the more liable because her life is ripped apart by the machination of others. I was concerned that the story would run out of steam after book 2 but book 3 kicked it right out of the park. She is played lik...more
It was a good series, I loved it from the start, but with all the twists and turns in each book I started getting lost as to who was the good guy and the bad guy.Plus I started getting confused as to what the main character was believing or even what she was doing. The ending to the series was a bit of a let down....but I sorta (I think if I guess the twists properly) understand it.

These books were interesting but my God, could Dante whine any more?! And Japhrimel just doing whatever he wants and forcing her along for the ride was irritating. Grow a backbone, woman!! The books were interesting but not really worth reading more then once. More developement of the psions and maybe a different, non-demon bad guy would have been nice. It was basically the same story over and over again. Blech.
There needs to be a glossary of terminology. But otherwise great character and relationship development combined with adventure in a supernatural genre. Dante is a heroine who is every bit kick-ass as she is insecure- and the author does a great job illustrating Dante's struggle with this and the back story on why.
