Okay so this book is actually two books in one. The first, Jame-Emily is, I guess, the better known (and more enjoyable.) The second is "Witches Children" and it's okay, but not great. I wish I could give the first half a 4 and the second a 3 but I'll stick with the 4 since I'm sure I would have really liked this as a kid.
Jane-Emily is definitely something that would have scared me as a kid. In the early 1900s Jane and her 18 year old aunt (whose name I have already forgotten! Oka...more

I gave this book five stars for old times' sake. As I reread it these 30 years after having read it over and over and over, I recognized a few key scenes which had lodged in my consciousness and become part of me.
The way Emily made herself sick - I love both the way it shows her as strong-willed and manipulative, and the way it's old-fashioned and of its time. (I really don't think that one would become deathly ill that way, but people thought so in the early 1900's.)

This is two novellas in one. Both quick and easy reads. I enjoyed Jane-Emily, but of the two I liked Witches' Children best.
If you like supernatural/ghost/haunting stories Jane-Emily is pretty much the start of the genre. Witche's Children, on the other hand, is not supernatural fiction. Clapp did her research, and her version of the story is quite plausable. She attempts to tell the story of the girls who spurred all the trouble during the Salen Witch Hunts. It is a fictional account of...more

Eh. I guess I should be happy that I'm still blissfully naive enough to buy that if a supposed "classic" is dragged out of the catacombs to be reissued all ceremonially, it must mean it's really good.
That isn't the case here: the first story was cute, if predictable, but the second was tedious as hell. Maybe when they say "classic novel of the supernatural," what they mean is "first time anyone ever sat down and tried to write a ghost story, preserved for ever and ...more

For a long time, this was the scariest book I had ever read. Jane, visiting family for the summer, is haunted by the spirit of a spoiled Victorian girl named Emily. Emily always got everything she ever wanted...and, wow, was she terrifying when things didn't go her way. Reflecting globes in gardens have been rendered eternally spooky by this book. I was happy to note that it's on the middle school reading list in the town where I live. I'm definitely planning on rereading it soon...during t...more

I cannot possibly be objective about this book. My sister, Jenni, owned it and I read it when I was, like 10. Totally loved it and read it repeatedly. They just reprinted it and I snatched it right up at B&N. It was like seeing an old friend for the first time in 20 years as I read each word. I totally enjoyed it and even had to stop reading it last night when everyone was asleep because I was so freaked out.

I am very glad this is finally back in print. I did not find it very frightening, but much like Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle, it was atmospherically creepy.
There were certain parts of the book that didn’t sit well with me ideologically, but that doesn’t have any bearing on the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to just about anyone.

I only read the "Jane-Emily" portion of this two book gathering and I'll get to "Witches Children" soon, but I wanted to read "Jane-Emily" for Halloween. Very good story, classic gothic supernatural ghost-ish story, right up my alley. :) I recommend for any fans of the supernatural and to anyone who is looking for a spooky read for Halloween. :)

I first read this at my grandma's house a LONG time ago...it was a battered old paperback that could have belonged to my mother! But I really liked it, and I still enjoy reading it (I inherited that battered old paperback.) It's a quick read, not all that deep-thought inspiring, but sometimes that is what you need!

I was surprised to see in a bookstore that this VERY scary and original children's book is back in print, in a sweet new edition that includes another novel by the author.
Recommended for those who like well-told, genuinely spooky stories. Not recommended for those who get nightmares easily.

This book scared the poop out of me when I was younger - I'm thinking maybe late elementary/early junior high.
I'm so glad it was re-released, I can't wait to read it again & see if it is still as scary as I remember after all these jaded years.

I read Jane Emily as a kid (not the other story attached to this addition). The story was extemely memorable. It sort of scared me as a kid.

A very spooky book (at least when I read it as a kid, I haven't re-read it in a long time).

I read this when I was about 10 or 11 and loved it. I read it so much the cover came off.

A favorite when I was in middle school, and still entertaining and creepy as an adult.
