This is the 8th Harry Bosch novel and I'm happy there are more books about him. I like the character a lot, he is deep, while he slightly falls into the rogue detective stereotype, he's still bad-ass and smart. This story revolves around bones found in the woods from a body buried there 20 years before. Bosch was able to resolve the murder in the usual Michael Connelly formula of finding guilt in a suspect just to be exonerated, do that twice and by the third time Bosch will get to the real culp...more
Oh, my...I admit that I have a problem, an addiction. I'm addicted to Michael Connelly. Guess there are other, worse addictions to have.
They're all, I mean in my estimation, all great reads. I don't even look to see what page number I'm on and how much more I have to read which I have a tendancy to do.
Harry Bosch had to grow on me since I read all of the Mickey Haller's first and just simply fell in love with "Mickey, Mickey, You're Sooo Fine!" (Joe Biden, you have competition!)

A South African mystery writer recently said this was the best crime book ever written. I have no way of verifying that, but it was very, very good. This novel seems to come in the middle of Michael Connelly's series featuring Los Angeles detective Harry Bosch. The title derives from the discovery at the outset of a set of boy's bones on a wooded hillside above a residential street, and the case resonates strongly with Bosch because of his own troubled childhood.

Time saver tip: if you've read my review of any Harry Bosch book, you've read 'em all. Since I don't reveal plots and reserve my comments to the overall book/author, characterization, style, etc...I just don't feel the need to repeat myself as in most cases series books if any good at all do remain consistent. The star ratings might change, but not my opinion of the series as a whole.

The 8th outing with dogged detective Harry Bosch deals with child abuse, which is a squicky subject. This is why so many of Jonathan Kellerman's novels that, while well written, are hard to read. Bosch fields a call from a concerned citizen that leads to the discovery of a shallow grave. The crime was committed at least 20 years ago and, as the ME puts it, "This one is bad."

Okay I was given this book by my father who absolutely loved it. I cant say that I feel the same however. It started well and definitely kept me reading throughout as it was quite fast paced. I loved the main character Bosch. He was a refreshing change from the usual hardened cops in most thrillers.
He was actually kind, caring and smart! He cared about the people he was interviewing whether he thought they were guilty or not. I personally thought that was incredibly refreshing to read compared...more

3 ½ stars. Excellent storytelling. I was engaged throughout but didn’t like the ending. I wanted more justice and revenge.
STORY BRIEF:
A boy was killed and buried in a wooded area 21 years ago. A bone expert says the boy had been consistently abused throughout his life. He lived most of his life in pain due to either healing or new injuries. Bosch and his partner talk to neighbors and take steps to get an identity.

I've loved Harry Bosch ever since I read my first Harry Bosch novel. This book is #8 in the series, but I haven't read in them in order so there is no problem in following them.
Harry is the kind of cop you hope is out there on every police force in America. He isn't concerned about making the department look good or bending situations to save his job. His concern is to find the TRUTH and let the chips fall where they may.

About halfway through the 2 hour drive to my in-laws' house, I realized that I had forgotten to bring a book or 2. I figured I would find something to read at their house. I started it on Friday evening around 7, and I had finished it by early Saturday afternoon, it was a quick and easy read. It wasn't a bad story, it just wasn't a great one. It follows Hieronymus Bosch, a Hollywood detective who kind of brings to mind a slightly less jaded version of Bruce Willis' character in The Last Boyscout...more
Fine story, suble sub-plots add suspense to crime-solving...
In this eighth entry in the detective Harry Bosch series, author Michael Connelly, whose bibliography now stands at some dozen novels, brings back a fan favorite character in a story so focused on solving the crime that the book is pretty close to a classic police procedural. Shades of the fairly new forensic pathologist stories by Dr. Kathy Reichs, a dog discovers a bone and trots it home to his master, who happens to be an MD. The doc...more

I listened to this book. The reader was rather bland which took away from the book. Every character in the book had basically the same "voice". Jerry Edgar, Bosch's partner sounded exactly like Bosch and so on. The storyline was not one of Connelly's best and I have to wonder why he wrote this book. I've read or listened to most of Connelly's Harry Bosch books and this is the weakest one. It received bad reviews on Audible.com because of the reader, Jay Fernandez. NOTE: At some point Len Cariou...more

City of Bones was the first book that I have ever read by Michael Connelly. I also made me a huge fan of his work. The main character is a man by the name of Harry Bosch. He is a seasoned Homicide Detective who seems to always have to go through extreme measures in order to bring justice to the victims in his investigations. This particular book is a cold case. When an old doctor lets his dog off the leash in the woods one day, said dog retrieves the bone that is later determined to belong to a...more

A dog uncovers a child-size human bone in the woods. Detective Harry Bosch is put on the case to solve this decades-old murder. He knows it is almost hopeless because the murder happened so long ago. But the case haunts him and so he follows it to the very end, through several surprising twists and turns.

I really did like this book but the reason I only gave three stars is because I really did not like his romance with the rookie cop Julia. I thought that was very tacky and low class. Harry is about 50 in this book and Julia is 35. I didn't find any deep meaning to this relationship and no reason to have it in the book.

This was my first Michael Connelly novel and I must say it was awesome from cover to cover. Once again, this was a book I wanted to read through in one sitting. In this intense pyschological thriller, Connelly spins a tale about a homicide detective with the LAPD named Harry Bosch who is called out on a case where a neighbor's dog uncovers buried bones...human bones. Bosch finds himself in a twenty year old case of a missing boy, a suspicious neighbor, a terrified older sister and the boy's moth...more
Yet another great story by Connelly! Unfortunately, since I've started reading Connelly, I've read his books mostly out of order. I really don't like doing that because, especially when there is a returning character I like getting a sense of his/her continuing journey. The struggles which force decisions in our daily lives really build a person, and that is how I like getting to know the characters in a story.
So, with that in mind, I probably didn't get out of "City of Bones" what I might have...more

This was 6-yr hiatus re-read I didnt remember a word of, just that I liked it. I may have liked it more the first time but even the 2nd round was still worth it. This is the only Connelly and Bosh book I have ever read. This one title has urged me to purchase other books by this author but still somehow havent read any!

One of the last Connelly books I had left to read. Reading this one was a very strange experience because I read it on my iTouch and somehow skipped something like 15 chapters, which I didn't realize until the end of the book. I missed two huge things that happened in the middle of the book, so after I finished it, I went back and read the middle! The story concerns a bone that was discovered in the woods by a dog. This leads to the discovery of a very old burial site of a child (who turns out t...more
I like Michael Connelly for beach trash that's not too trashy - this was a good one-day read on the beach. This moved nicely and kept me guessing. With similar books I get frustrated that the inner dialogue is overused and cheesy, but Connelly is good about keeping that to a minimum. Also he doesn't feel the need to titillate and focuses on what is important to the plot.
Connelly definitely overdoes the whole "I'm a cop and I'm so dedicated to it" thing, and I haven't read any Bosch books before...more

I have mixed feelings about this book. As a whodunnit, it's a great read; however, there's an Event (I don't want to give anything away) about midway through the book that's just... very strange. I didn't really see the need for it plot-wise, or quite understand the reasons why the character made the choices that were made. And the reactions to the Event were pretty muted, considering what had happened. The Event is only peripherally related to the case (although rather important to the main cha...more
I like books that could easily be movies, and this is one that would be a good drama to watch if a few things were changed. I always like reading the stories surrounding Detective Harry Bosch, but this one left me kind of bummed out for a variety of reasons which I won't get into for the sake of not spoiling it for anyone who wants to be kind of bummed out after finishing a book. I'll just say I needed more justice. More vindication. More TAKE THAT, YOU FUCKERS!

I loved this book. So many twists and turns. I'm a fan of Connelly and always enjoy his books. This one was really well done. Bones are found on a hillside and they appear to have been there at least 20 years. Harry Bosch wants to investigate as the bones are identified as belonging to a young boy who had been repeatedly abused. He doesn't get great support from his department as it is an old case without much chance of finding the killer. Bosch buys some time and perseveres, but tragedy upon tr...more
Read on its own, 'City of Bones' is a quite weak murder mystery. However, put into the context as the continuation of the Harry Bosh saga, it's a must read for all the fans of the series. No, the murder mystery isn't very interesting nor engaging, but I suspect that it isn't supposed to be. But it's fascinating to watch as this mundane case grinds on Bosh and finally makes him make a major change of course in his life. At the same time I am slightly irritated at Connelly, because he is really to...more
