This is one snooze of a book. Given that it deals in mysticism, magic, dragons, giants, and evil knights, that's quite the accomplishment.

The first installment of The Time Warp Trio's adventures, Knights of the Kitchen Table, presents the reader with three young boys - names are incredibly unimportant, given that the three are essentially the same generic character - at a birthday party, discovering a magical "book" entitled Book, which seemingly grants time traveling wishes. It isn't exactly gr...more

One minute, Joe and his friends are sitting around his kitchen table as he opens a birthday present from his Uncle Joe; the next, they find themselves being run down by a black knight!

It turns out Joe, Sam, and Frank have been transported back in time to Camelot. And Camelot is being attacked by an angry giant AND an angry dragon at the same time! Also, Merlin doesn't believe they are magicians. It's up to the trio to save the castle, prove their skills, and somehow make it back home.

I was hooke...more

The "Knights of the Kitchen Table" is the first in a fun little series from The Time Warp Trio by Jon Scieszka. While celebrating Joe's birthday, a little box wrapped up in black and gold is discovered at his party. Joe opens the box and discovers it is a present from his uncle Joe, who is a magician. It's a magic book and instantly Joe's friend Fred makes a wish. Joe, Fred, and their other friend Sam, are magically transported back through time to the age of King Arthur and the knights of the r...more

The Time Warp Trio: Knights of the Kitchen Table is the first book in the Time Warp Trio series. These stories are full of humor, adventure, and suspense and are sure to keep the reader on their toes!

Knights of the Kitchen Table begins at the birthday party of one of the main characters, Joe, at his house in New York City. He is celebrating with this two best friends, Sam and Fred, as well as his mom and dad. His mother gives him a present from his uncle, Joe the Magnificent, a practicing magi...more

Having been a fan of Jon Scieszka and his humorous fairy tale adaptations (The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Odd Tales, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs) I was more than happy to sit down and read one of his beginning reader novels. The Time Warp Trio is a cute little series and Knights of the Kitchen Table is the first in the series. This story follows three young boys as they are magically transported back through time to the age of King Arthur and the knights of the round table. T...more

This book was about three friends, Joe, Fred, and Sam. On Joe's birthday, his uncle, a magician, gives him a book. When they open it, one of the boys wonders what it would be like to see real Knights. All of a sudden, all the boys are pulled into a different time period of knights and castles. As soon as the boys realize where they are, a knight tries to attack them. They convince the king they are wizards so they do not get killed. They finally get back when a real wizard finds a book with a pi...more

One of the best things about being a mom is reading Michelle's books. This was one I spied at the library and picked up for Michelle. I LOVE Jon Scieszka (and I thought Streutker was a tough name!) and couldn't wait to see if this book was as clever and silly and fun as The Stinky Cheese Man or The True Story of the Big, Bad Wolf.

I was not disappointed. I was able to read it in one very short sitting (while Michelle swam today - less than an hour), and it was delightful. It is sort of a "fractu...more

It is Joe's birthday, and his uncle sent him an odd present- a magical looking book. Indeed it is magic. It transports the three friends back to King Arthur's time where they will battle a giant and a dragon. Most important of all, if they live, they must find a way back home.

I was looking for another funny series to read aloud with my daughter and ever since reading Science Verse and Squids will be Squids, I am a Jon Scieszka fan. Since each book in the series takes place in a different histori...more

This is the first book in Jon Scieszka's Time Warp Trio series. Overall, this is a fun book in which Joe, Sam and Fred find themselves transported back in time to Arthurian England, thanks to a book Joe received from his uncle, Joe the Magnificent (a magician), for his birthday. These 20th century kids defeat the black knight before running into the Knights of the Round Table and meeting all of the characters of Arthurian legend: Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and Merlin. When the castle is beset...more

As much as I love Jon Scieszka, I had never gotten around to reading any of his Time Warp Trio series before. I don't know why, because I read this first title in the series in about 20 minutes! I can see why these books are great for boys who don't want to sit still for long, who like funny books, and who like action and adventure (aka, almost all boys!). When Joe's magician uncle gives him a magic book for his birthday, he and his two best friends are transported back to the time of King Arthu...more

“Knight of the Kitchen Table” is the first book of “The Time Warp Trio” book series. This book introduces us to the tree main characters Fred, Sam, and Joe. As it turns out Joe, who narrates the story, and his friends have somehow ended up back in time with the Black Knight attacking them. Joe explains that his birthday gift from his uncle, Joe the magician, caused this. Apparently the gift he received was a magic book able to transport people to the time and place depicted in its pages. The sto...more

Knights of the Kitchen Table is part of the Time Warp Trio series. Regrettfully, I haven’t read any of the other Time Warp Trio books. The story begins mid disaster with an ominous mid-evil knight charging three modern day boys. The reader soon learns that the story actually began with three boys, Joe, Sam, and Fred celebrating Joe’s birthday. After opening a mysterious gift from Joe’s magician uncle they are transported back in time to King Arthur’s court! They are immediately confronted with...more

Found these books and ordered them for the RIF distribution at Victor's school and I tried to talk him into them but he got something else. So the other day at the library he was having trouble finding a book so he asked me what was that book I suggested and we looked it up on the computer. He read it quickly and was all about getting another one today so I figure I had better check them out. Well these are short and delightful reads I was laughing and reading parts out loud to Kel. Kelton and I...more

Joe’s uncle gives the best birthday presents. Maybe it’s because he’s a magician. But this year Joe’s uncle gives him a mysterious blue book. Books are no fun, right? Wrong! This book transports Joe and his best friends Fred and Sam back to King Arthur’s Camelot, and being a knight isn’t so easy. The Time Warp Trio use creativity, science, and just plain luck to defeat the Black Knight, a stinky giant, and a grouchy dragon. The boys might be heroes and the newest members of Arthur’s Roundtable,...more

"Knights of the Kitchen Table" (The Time Warp Trio #1) by Jon Scieszka (like seska) enhanced by exaggerated angular black shaded drawings by ilustrator Lane Smith. Magician Uncle Joe's birthday present entitled "The Book" swirls green mist and grants pal Fred's wish to "see knights and all that stuff for real", sending Sir Joe the Magnificent, Sir Fred the Awesome, and Sir Sam the Unusual to King Arthur's castle opposing the Black Knight, grossly smelly giant Bleob, and fire-breathing leather-wi...more

This book is the beginning book to what seems to be a fun adventure series. The book begins right in the action, which will quickly grab a young readers attention, then goes back to explain how the characters got there. Three boys at a birthday party receive an unusual gift and are transported to the past and get to help Sir Lancelot and the Knights of the Round Table. The action, knights, giants, and dragons will be good attraction factors for boys to pick up the book and read. With the adventu...more

Joe received an interesting gift for his birthday: an old, dark blue book with stars and moons on it. When opened, it has the power to transport you to faraway places, which is what happens to Joe, Fred and Sam. They are whisked away to medieval times where they have to defeat a knight, a dragon, and a giant! But that is the least of their problems, how will they get home?

This was a cute, amusing book for beginning reluctant guy readers, lots of action and adventure. There’s some mild name calli...more

This is a cute early reader book for boys. (Very short!) Three boys find themselves whisked to King Arthur's realm through a magic book. Hooray! Then they have to use their brains since they aren't really wizards to defeat a dragon (named Smaug - I thought it was weird to have the Hobbit's dragon juxtaposed with King Arthur, but that's just me being a LOTR nerd). I was pretty surprised by how almost sarcastic/unfazed they were about time traveling and whatnot, but I'm sure it will appeal to youn...more

This book is an adventure book about 3 boys going into a picture of a dark castle. The castle is amusing because it looks very dangerous. Inside the castle there are weird things like nonsensical cards and knights. I like this book because it is adventurous. My favorite books are mystery books, but I also like adventure books. I didn't like that it is hard for me to understand and that there are many weird and hard words like vanquish, demon, and mere.

This is the first book in the Time Warp Trio series by Scieszka who also wrote the hilariously funny "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales" and "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs."
The entire Time Warp series provides a great transition into chapter books with eye-catching illustrations by Lane Smith and mind-pleasing prose by Jon.
In "Knights," Joe, Fred, and Sam are transported back in time by The Book, a birthday present from Joe’s uncle. It contains pictures of knights a...more

When his Uncle gives him a magical book for his birthday, Joe and his two best friends are transported back in time, where they encounter the knights of the round table, a giant, the famous sorcerer Merlin, and a dragon. This fast paced transitional chapter book is thematically similar to Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Treehouse and should appeal to fans of that series. This first book in the series ends satisfactorily but whets the readers' appetite for the sequels. The book's short length and gener...more
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy)
Though this is a very short chapter book (only about 50 pages), it does require some strong understanding of language and vocabulary which might trip up younger readers. The premise is that 3 friends end up back in time with the Knights of the Roundtable. There is a mixture of present day talk with some formal language (ie. What sayeth he? - type of stuff) There is a lot of humor and fun and could be a great start for kids who might be overwhelmed by a longer book.

While this book had a very confusing beginning, it straightened out quickly and turned into a rather engaging and humorous book that involves time travel to the time of King Arthur.

While other series focus really hard in the area of history, this one takes a trip to what I would more call literary eras with the first being the Middle Ages, the next to pirates, and so on.

I liked the boys and I liked how they solved their problems. It's a fun series and one I would recommend.
Mrs. Fornero
This series would really appeal to boys and puts a humorous, sarcastic spin on The Magic Tree House premise. This series is written for third and fourth grade level readers, and requires the reader to pay close attention in order to truly understand and enjoy the wacky adventures of the three main characters. These books allow the reader to imagine what would happen if kids like themselves were thrown back in time. Each book promises a new, wacky adventure.

In time warp trio Knights of the kitchen table three boys go back in time and see knights ,King Arthur ,giants and ...DRAGONS!!!!! They also almost get captured and killed like every single Trio story, but they never get killed or captured. My favorite character would probably be Fred. The only problem is that they like the New York Yankees.

I read this book to my son because I heard it was a good book for boys. It involves three boys who go through time through the magic powers of a book (sound familar, Magic Treehouse fans?). The story involves belching and a rather predictable plot.

Gross-out humor boys books fans: Captain Underpants is funnier.
Time travelling books fans: Magic Tree House is better.

This is not horrible, just not great. Twaddle, as homeschoolers would say.
Donald Armfield
I read a handful of Scieszka's stories to my daughters and decided to check out more for my enjoyment.

The two titles I grabbed are part of a dozen of a continuing story of a group of friends with a book and magic behind the pages.

Be careful what you wish for his uncle warned him. Knights and swords are really my thing. The others I hope are better.

Jon Scieszka is funny in a bizarre way for all ages.
The Reading Countess
This quick-read from one of the masters of the funny bone and a pied-piper-for-reluctant-boy-readers, Scieszka didn't disappoint my crowd of (mostly) reluctant and emerging readers. The great thing about Time Warp Trio #1 besides its fun sized size is the fact that it is the king of all series. Do you like this one? Well, you're in luck! There are nine hundred more where this one comes from, AND you don't have to necessarily read them in order! Bingo! Sign your kids up. I just did mine!

Illustrated by Lane Smith. The first in a non-dependent series, Knights of the Kitchen Table is both exciting and funny. PERFECT for boys, but girls will like it too. It's short and fits the requirements of a transitional reader with illustrations, short chapters, and understandable vocabulary. I will definitely be recommending this series in the future.
Vanessa Green
This is a book that would appeal to the student that likes adventure and the thought of time traveling. It would particularly appeal to boys since three boys are the main characters; however some girls might like it as well. I would have. Looking at the amount of books in this series, I would think that this particularly popular series should be in a library.
