This book felt too fast, too shallow, and too predictable. It could have been a good book with more development, depth, and mystery. I forced through it just to end the pain of reading it. I'm not giving it a 1 simply because I liked the feel of the book in my hands. Good shape and paper quality. Sad, but true.

Daisy Giordano and her older sisters Rose and Poppy have just returned home from vacation in Italy the summer after Daisy's junior year. Their psychic mother has stayed behind to work on an important case and is unavailable to help solve a big mystery here in Nightshade, the quirky little town where the Giordanos live in Northern California. Doppelgängers of local residents are appearing all over the place, a fact the girls hesitate to mention to their mother because one of the mysterious doubles appears to be their long-lost father. Their mother has never stopped trying to find him for the past six years, and Daisy and her sisters don't want to get their mother's hopes up about him until they are 100% sure that the man who looks and acts like their dad--at least some of the time--is really him. But figuring out the truth is made doubly hard because they are prejudiced in favor of the man due to their desperate longing that he might truly be their beloved father. Fortunately, they have working in their favor Rose's ESP, Poppy's telekinesis, and Daisy's ability to do both those things, as well.

On top of this pressing family problem, Daisy is confounded by the fact that a big portion of the players on the high school football team--including her hunky boyfriend Ryan--have bulked up massively in just the three short weeks Daisy has been in Europe. This seems physically impossible, and Daisy is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery, too, while simultaneously attempting, along with her two sisters, to make a little money at a summer job. Rose is working for an eccentric scientist at a secret lab at the local university, Poppy is running a concession stand at the beach, and Daisy is cooking and waiting tables at the local diner. The fact that her boss is permanently invisible and his juke box is enchanted doesn't phase Daisy a bit compared to the many other problems facing her during the weirdest summer on record.

This book is another big hit for Marlene Perez, in her wonderful "Dead Is" series. Daisy is as unstoppable as ever, and the kooky characters in her town alternate between being spooky, scary and downright hilarious, including, besides her boss, the juke box, and the sugar-snarfing doppelgängers, a powerful witch and assorted werewolves and vampires.

This book is the third of five books, which are best enjoyed in order. Book 1 is Dead Is the New Black. Book 2 is Dead Is a State of Mind. Book 4 is Dead Is Just a Rumor. Book 5, the final book in the series, is Dead Is Not an Option. It is scheduled for release in 2011.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys light, humorous YA fantasy stories with an intriguing mystery plot.

Note for parents, teachers and librarians: This book is G-rated. There are no incidents of drinking, drugs or adolescent sex either on or offstage, and Daisy's family relationships are warm and loving.

I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. While I’ll admit that it wasn’t the best book in the series so far, it was interesting and well written. I do think that this book was intense. At first the novel irritates me with all its recapping. I'm more than sure that by the third novel people must be familiar with the things going on.

What a fun series!
this is the 3rd installment, and was by far the best so far. Im eagerly awaitng the 4th book.

I can't tell you how many people I have recommended this series to, especially those with 11-12 year old girls who are not into the Twilight series. Everyone seems to agree, no matter how old they are, think that this series is just wonderful. The characters of Daisy, Poppy and Rose provide good role models since they all have college plans, hold jobs and value family. The mystery of each book is enough to keep everyone turning the pages.

This book was pretty good. Personally, I don't think that this one was my favorite in the series because I just thought this one was the least interesting. I liked the idea of the Doppelgangers and how the doctor's name was Dr. Fraken. I mean, how much more obvious could you get!!! This book appeals to all kinds of teens. She has many more books just like this book. It’s a serious of many books, so many teens read it because if they didn’t she would keep writing the serious. This book out of the whole serious would have to be my favorite and probably many others favorites. The book just gives teens different tastes of their favorite types of books. This book has the lasting value just like the Twilight series had.

To me I find the book to be well written. The way she has you hooked in after the first couple of pages amaze me. She puts all these good details in the book that makes you visualize what is truly happening in the book. In the book the main character says “Even from as far away as I was, I could hear grunts and groans as the coaches yelled at them.” This puts a picture of the football guys running around on the fields getting yelled at by their coach. The author wants to get you connected with the author so you feel like you are the character.

I mainly relate to the main character because we have so much alike. She goes through weird problems every day just like me. I feel like the main character is me. The main character is so strange because of their power and with my family we are strange because we do strange things other families probably don’t do. Her relationship between her and her best friend, where they are so attached to each other reminds me how attached I am with my best friend. We do so much together and we have each other’s back, just like the main character and her best friend.

I would have to say the best part of the book is the connection with the teens of today. We can easily relate to the authors in our real lives. I would say the only weakness would have to be how long you have to wait for the next book to come out, because the endings of the books leave you waiting for more. I would defiantly recommend this book to my friends. They all read Twilight so they would love this. This book series is one of my favorites and I know my friends would love it to.

Had to watch out for those Dopplegangers, and it wasn't hard to pick out the problem makers in this story. It doesn't take the Nightshade city council (unofficial arbiters of all matters paranormal) long to determine that their community is suffering from a doppelganger infestation. But who is creating the doubles, and why? Daisy and her two older sisters, Rose and Poppy, are committed to figuring out exactly what is going on. And that's before their long lost father shows up in town. Now they have to know the truth. Is he their real dad, or just another doppel-double.

The doppelgangers would be enough weirdness for any other town, but this is Nightshade, which means there's bound to be more than one bout of strangeness going on. The second puzzle Daisy faces is a distinctly furry one. A wild pack of teen werewolves is on the loose and no one knows where they came from. It's pretty clear that these new shifters are made and not genetic - a fact that breaks all kinds of city council rules and makes the werewolves themselves extra dangerous. The question Daisy can't wrap her head around is, who would be stupid enough to make a whole pack of werewolves right under the noses (and snouts) of the council members? Obviously Daisy is going to need all of her psychic sleuthing skills if she wants to solve the town's problems and still get that quality time with extra-hunky Ryan.

Dead Is So Last Year is the third installment in Marlene Perez's series set in Nightshade and, like the first two books, this one is a blast from beginning to end. Ms. Perez has a real knack for combining just the right amounts of paranormal mystery, humor, high school happenings and romance to create a quick sassy read that leaves you both satisfied and eager for more. It's not strictly necessary to have read Dead is the New Black and Dead is a State of Mind before tackling this one, but you'll probably enjoy Dead is So Last Year a whole lot more if you have.(less)
