But getting that highfalutin hog home in time for the Laredo state fair proves to be more than Rose bargained for. When a cold-hearted coyote, persnickety snake, lethargic Texas longhorn, and a whole host of other southern ...more

Finally a Show-Me Readers Award Nominee that I liked!!

The text in Desert Rose is very cute and it feels as though it should be read with a big Southern accent and yee-haw. Poor Rose is only trying to use a shortcut to get her hog to the state fair, but the hog won't take a drink, the coyote won't bite the hog, the snake won't scare the coyote, and so on. This is a circular story and Rose keeps trying to find someone or something to help get her hog to the fair. Readers will enjoy seeing how Rose

Funny! My daughter and I both were laughing about this book!

The story itself is about a pig farmer who finds a gold nugget and buys a great hog to take to the fair in Laredo but she is having all kinds of issues trying to get there and it all starts with a river that she can't get across.

Its kind of like There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly...in that something happens and it gets repeated with the next item on the next page and so on.

The language is pretty funny and we read it outloud wit

This cumulative tale is a Texas version of an old fairy tale, the name of which escapes me. Rose is taking her hog to the fair, but the hog won't cross the water. So she asks a succession of critters, people, and objects to help her, and none will oblige until...the armadillo, who sets off a chain reaction of cooperation. Anyone reading this story will be reminded of the fairy tale I'm thinking of. Anyway, what I liked best was Desert Rose's colorful expressions, like "Starch my stirrups!" and " ...more

Fun book. :) Not sure if it's what you call a circular story or if there's another term for it. Desert Rose finds a gold nugget while she's mucking the pig pen. She trades the gold nugget for the biggest hog in town and starts off for the state fair in Laredo. When the highfalutin hog stops cooperating, Desert Rose has to seek help from passersby. Hilarity ensues. :)

Cute story in the western vernacular like the I know and Old Lady with each new thing that happens repeat the back story or other items over and over. Loved the illustrations!
