I really cannot believe I am writing a non-glowing-verging-on-negative review for a Morganville book. This series has consistently been one of my favourite reads - I thought that there could be no such thing as a bad Morganville book. But after reading Ghost Town, I remembered the problems I had with the first book in the series (Glass House). Namely, it just didn't make me care about the characters.

But after reading Ghost Town, I remembered the problems I had with the first book in the series (Glass House). Namely, it just didn't make me care about the characters.

Claire and the gang are, as usual, in the midst of another action-packed drama - this time centred around Claire and Mrynin's experimental new machine. Now, that should make my knees turn to jelly, because a) I am head-over-heels in love with Myrnin, and b) I absolutely adore the Claire/Myrnin relationship. And yet their dynamic in this book is pretty much centred around Ada - which was just one of those characters I wish Caine would drop already. Seeing Myrnin - of all people - so love-crazy (instead of regular crazy) just annoyed me. There were a few scenes between them at the start of the book that I loved, but then it was all downhill.

Same goes for Amelie and Oliver - usually two kick-ass characters who seemed to spend this book going on and on about their unbelievable emotional angst. Not to mention the fact that they have been having the same argument about Morganville for nine books. Every time they brought it up, my eyes would start to glaze over. I get it already! Geez.

As for the Glass House residents, I have been growing less and less attached to them with each book. Shane/Claire used to make my heart pitter-patter, and now I feel like skipping through all their lovey-dovey business. I guess they've reached that point in their relationship where the camera would usually fade to black and display a "happily ever after" banner. It's great for them, but not so interesting for us readers. Not that I want angst, per say, but some kind of development would be nice.

Bottom line? Depressing instalment to a great series. I remain a fan, but have lost my faith in the series.

Excuse my language but you fucked up, dude. I worried for your sanity and for your life. There were times when I loved you and when I hated you. You've caused so much trouble, so much pain and suffering and yet I still care about you. Even on that last page when my jaw dropped after my little fit of worry over what you may have done to yourself.

Ghost Town really begins when Claire stakes and kills a vamp whilst trying to rescue Eve and is sentenced to no sleep or rest of any kind until she's fixed the machine that runs Morganville, previously run by Ada. And while she manages it by the skin of her teeth, Myrnin tweaks it for his own purposes which causes both humans and vampires, one by one, to lose their memories of the last 3 years.

As a result, all hell breaks loose with the hero in the end being someone you wouldn't expect but it was a redeeming act. Only the last page twists things to the point where I'm not sure whether Myrnin's actions were good (as it may provide much needed closure and no one was killed) or just plain bad but I worry about the effect it will have on a couple of the characters.

I know this took me a few days to finish but this is no reflection of the book itself but rather a severe lack of free time. I enjoyed it more than Kiss of Death partly because there was less cringe-worthy kissy-wissy lovey-doveyness between Shane and Claire, instead these kinds of moments were made to be sweet and endearing. In fact, a couple of my favourites are when Shane starts falling for Claire again when he can't remember any of their previous time together and when Claire does the same.

I want to quickly comment on the Myrnin-Claire possibility which I've previously noted in earlier reviews. This possibility is noted by several characters in this book plus Myrnin is unusually kind and caring towards Claire and makes comparisons between her and Ada who he admits was his lover. Also, Claire sleeps in his bed! Not that I want this to happen, I love Shane but I just think he might make a move on her at some point in the future.

Another thing I loved about this book was the politics, specifically the relationship between Amelie and Oliver and the town. It's complicated but one of the lessons I've learned is never be complacent when you're in a position of power, it leads to humiliating circumstances. And, um, never fall in love with your rival?

Also included in my UK edition was a short story called 'Worth Living For' from Shane's perspective set between Fade Out and Kiss of Death involving Michael and Bishop. The story sees Shane approached and asked to secretly follow Michael when it looks like he may be helping Bishop who has escaped and on the run. It's not a great story and isn't important to the overall story in the main books. And if you were wondering, the title 'Worth Living For' refers to Claire, of course. ;)(less)

Reading The Morganville Vampires series is like watching a series of episodes from a poplar TV show. Ghost Town was still fun and enjoyable as an addition to the Morganville series, and seriously if you have read until book 9 then you will be happy with the developments.

This book served to patch up some of the issues the book precedent to it had left. Frank Collins is addressed, the missing barriers around town, etc. The way the whole issue was resolved left me with a little smile on my face, because it was so... Ironic and sort of perfect. I like how Claire has developed so much from the first book, where she was a victim, all up to this book where she is a leader. We also get interesting developments when it comes to Amelia, Oliver, and Myrnin. Oh Myrnin, be still my heart. The fans can keep Shane, and maybe even Michael (I would have to think about it) but there is just something about Myrnin's craziness and moments of clarity that pull at my heart strings (plus he is like hell-a smart, who doesn't love a genius?). But to be honest he fucked up this time around, big time, but I still forgive him. In his sinister crazy way, his mind sort of couldn't help what it did, not that it justifies him but it gives a bitter sweet sort of feeling to the situation.

I love how as a reader I am able to witness the small but potentially powerful changes that are occurring in Morganville, and I think this installment helps the reader, as well as the characters, to really take a moment and notice how much things have changed, and keep changing. I am a faithful reader and I believe that even though The Morganville Vampires may not be my favorite series it certainly is a must have on your shelf.(less)

I loved the starting of the book. Especially because Claire thought a guy was hot other than Shane and Micheal. It just seemed so much nicer. But I stick with the fact that Shane and Claire are made for each other.

I thought that this book was really interesting because its a mix of really old vampires but its much more futuristic. From lots of blood and weapons and portals to cheesy gross romance which is the disturbing part that I didn't really liked but it was still good. It’s even harder to maintain with the destruction of Ada, the computer that managed to boundaries around Morganville. Without the shields and the portals and, most importantly, the field that erases humans memories when they leave, Morganville is now vulnerable and the vampire’s control is tenuous.

Tensions flare still higher when violence leads to an actual coup and the return of draconian punishments the vampires had supposedly abandoned, completely ignoring the human council members.

Then the badly damaged computer starts messing up – and it’s not just the memories of people leaving that it tampers with.

This book follows the pattern of the last book in fixing many of the issues that so characterise the Morganville vampire series.

Firstly, Claire is fully involved in this story. She is involved from the first page, involved in trying to find a solution and involved in implementing the solution – the protagonist is an active participant in this story. And she isn’t an active participant because she has decided to meddle and what everyone needs is a clueless 16 year old flailing around for no good reason. It is actually reasonable for her to be front and centre in this campaign, she is the one with the knowledge and the skills, she is the one who is best able to actually confront the problem.

And her motivations and reasoning are sensible. Initially we have to ask why she’d support the vampires, but the memory loss makes it personal. But more, she sees the nuance of the volatile situation and the risk of the vampires lashing out if they don’t have their safeguards. The factions are similarly fleshed out. We also see some real proof of Claire’s maturity with her not just seeing this nuance but also her behaviour over her father’s heart condition.

The factions that are tearing at Morganville are also far more nuanced than we’ve seen before – Amelie and Oliver have an interesting relationship that is fascinating to explore. Myrnin is almost a tragic figure even while terrifying and dangerous and brilliant. Even Shane’s father has some depth to him. It’s actually rather bemusing but the big forces in the town and the antagonists are, in many ways, far more developed than the actual 4 main characters.

I think the pacing was still a little more padded than necessary, no matter how busy or urgent or panicked Claire is, she can always pack in plenty of moping time and some hellaciously long internal monologues. But, again, this was much better than in previous books in this series.

We have some small amounts of inclusion with Hannah the Black chief of police and a new Asian character – not major roles and a long time coming, certainly, but they’re there, just. Despite a gazillion and one characters, GBLT people seem to have the good sense to get the hell out of Morganville and there’s not one. There’s also a disturbing trend of mixing evil female characters with “sluttiness” looking at both Monica and Ysandre; their revealing clothing is coded as evil.

Hands down 5 stars! WOW this book is hella amazing!!! I'd been thinking the series was loosing it's spark after the last few but after reading this? Definitively got it's juice back! Damn!!!

With Ada gone, Morganville is in serious need of a new security system. While Claire’s working to do things her way, Myrnin likes things his steam punk ways. So the two are bound to clash over and over again over the best way to build the new machine.

Claire finds herself in a bad situation after a vampire attack and is given two choices, get the machine built on a strict deadline and the other well it’s not pleasant at all. With the help of Myrnin, who we see a much more human side of, Claire gets the machine built and gets ready to come back to her normal life.

One problem, the machine is affecting everyone in town, even the vampires. It starts off small with people looking for businesses that don’t exist anymore to big things, like forgetting who your roommates are to where you live. Claire needs to figure out how to turn the machine off, which is a little tough with a now all-too-crazy-Myrnin protecting it and a password to unlock it, that he can’t remember.

Soon vampires are going crazy and Morganville citizens are wondering the streets dazed and confused. Claire’s one of the Morganville residents to remember who she is, but she loses her friends, support and Shane in the process. So she’s forced to ally up with an old enemy to save the town—before they all forget.

As the 9th book in a series, you’d expect it to be winding down, but Rachel Caine shows no signs of stopping the action. Ghost Town is filled with stake throwing, throat ripping and hit taking action. The stakes are much higher here, people and vampires will die if they don’t get the machine off. It’s a race against the clock, because as daylight hours approach the night of the fight, those who remember risk joining their confused friends.

Ghost Town really sets the stage for book ten, Bite Club, which comes out in April 2011.

The Morganville Vampires series keeps getting better and better. I have found a new favorite in this series. Like the previous books, Ghost Town is jam packed with action, vampires, and the chaos only Morganville can bring.

I definitely had no idea what was coming in Ghost Town. I could not put it down, and was absolutely addicted. This series is like a drug, each book captures you and then you sit there reading, straight through, usually like an addict.

What I love about Rachel Caine is all the unique story lines she comes up with. I have yet to feel like one of her books has already been written and that she needs to end the series. Usually with this many books, the series starts to go down hill a bit. But bravo, Rachel Caine, bravo! We still have good stories and adventures leading into the tenth book.

I haven't read a Morganville Vampires book in a while and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy this series. I like the balance of the characters, how no one is completely good or completely bad and most of the time you can't figure out what side of that line they're even leaning toward. I had moments while reading this book where I loved and other moments when I hated just about every character.

The only character who I consistently hate, and the only thing keeping me from giving this book a five star...more I haven't read a Morganville Vampires book in a while and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy this series. I like the balance of the characters, how no one is completely good or completely bad and most of the time you can't figure out what side of that line they're even leaning toward. I had moments while reading this book where I loved and other moments when I hated just about every character.

The only character who I consistently hate, and the only thing keeping me from giving this book a five star rating, is Monica Morrell. Every time I see her name on the page, I grind my teeth. I'm sorry to say it but I'm so tired of this character I just can't stand it. She's so consistently ridiculous. She's more than served her purpose in the story and everyone else in this series has long since outgrown her antics. I feel like one of the vampire would have eaten her by now just to make her go away. Hell, I feel like they would have let her leave town just to get rid of her at this point. She serves no purpose in the story, in my opinion, and I really don't understand why she hasn't just faded into the background. Every scene she was in in this story felt forced, like Ms. Caine was writing her in just for the sake of having her there.

That being said, I loved everything else about this book. As the memories started to go, there were some really beautiful scenes. The scenes between Shane and Claire are particularly good. It's just so heart breaking and really shows off Claire's strength in that she's able to keep moving forward in spite of bleeding inside. (view spoiler)

I'm also very intrigued by the developing dynamic between Amelie and Oliver, as well as the changes in Myrrin. The way they work together, and don't work together, is fascinating. We learn so much about them in this book by getting to see glimpses of them from before the series started. Over the course of the series we've been focused primarily on how the Glass House characters have grown and changed, and in this book Ms. Caine showed us how much those same events have impacted the vampire characters. I loved it and I can't wait to see where this power struggle goes next.(less)

I love the Morganville Vampire books and was really disappointed that I read books 8 and 9 so quickly. Rachel Caine weaves such an amazing story that I devoured her books and then have to wait so long for the next one (days is too long for these books, months are forever).

I read the first 8 books a long time ago, and it took me a very long time to pick up the this next book in the series. I wasn't the biggest fan of the last one, when the gang, Claire, Shane, Michael & Eve were given permission to leave Morganville to persue Michael's dreams as a music artist. I think I did not like it as much because I got so used to the characters staying in Morganville and trying to deal with the constant chaos within the town, but anyway... in this novel they are all back...more

Young Adult Vampre Fiction. Why am I reading this, again?

Oh. Yes. Because this is a stonking good series with a well-thought out milieu, believable characters, and scary scary vampires with nary a sparkle among them. Who needs to sparkle when you can entrance, charm or just plain out take what you want?

There was something comforting, in an overly strange way, about reading a vampire story over Halloween weekend. Rachel Cain’s Ghost Town, the latest in her Morganville Vampire Series, while not exclusively about vampires – fearless child prodigy Claire is our protagonist after all- most of the vampires who are in it are frightening and by no means muzzled. Particularly in Ghost Town when tensions are high with the changing nature of vampire/human relations, and even more so when Claire and Myrnin get the machine back up to keep everyone inside Morganville. As the external force field starts working internally, memories begin to be erased, and vampires are forgetting that they’re supposed to play nice now. When that extends all the way to the top with the Founder, Amelie, Claire’s fighting an uphill battle that she might not be able to win. With a whole town suffering from amnesia, species relations floundering, and the two biggest/baddest vamps in town squaring off, poor Claire is stuck in the middle and left to fix it all herself.

Ghost Town seemed both longer and more complete in and of itself than some of its earlier counterparts. When I first reviewed the series I mentioned how all the books seem like one massive story line- intricately woven and interconnected. Ghost Town is more of the same in that it picks up where the others left off, but it told a more complete story arc from start to finish. Kiss of Death the seventh, and the one immediately prior to Ghost Town, attempted to tell a non-related tale outside the city limits of Morganville, it seemed rushed, was difficult to follow, and honestly felt more like an out-take to the series than a vital part of it. Ghost Town got everything back on track and brought back the issues in Fade Out that were suspended in Kiss of Death.

The infamous living machine that used to comprise of Ada had been destroyed, and with it the town boundaries were lost, the portal network was broken, and the memory wipe for those leaving town was suspended. In the latest novel, Claire& Co. were back on track to get it up and running- even at fang-point and under cruel and unusual circumstances. What I enjoyed about this plot in particular was that it allowed us to delve further into secondary characters. We got a glimpse at the deeper-than-we-previously-knew- relationship between Myrnin and his assistant-vampire-turned-machine-lover Ada as well as the ever unsteady alliance between Amelie and OIiver. The widespread memory loss, making everyone think it was three years ago, gave a unique look at how much the town has changed since Claire arrived. Not only have vampire/human relations been altered, but the people themselves have grown and flourished. And frankly, witnessing Shane have to relive the death of his sister, mother, and turning of his father made a memory very much alive. As everyone else lost their memories, Claire watched everyone she loved slip away from her and it was a struggle for her to go on without them. For perhaps only the second time in the series, the reader felt the real possibility that Claire and her wonder-brain would fail.

My favorite part of this book, and the Morganville Vampire Series as a whole is its cohesion. Not once, in eight books, has Rachel Caine lost her characters. From book one to eight they are exactly the same. That’s not to say they’re static and don’t grow, because they do, in a evolutionary background type way instead of “Eureka! I’m a new person!” But their voices, beliefs, characteristics, values, etc. all remain true to the original characters. One of my biggest complaints in a series is when each book has the characters be completely different. Some are so bad I feel like I can say, “Well are you referring to Book I Bob, Book II Bob, or Book III Bob?” because they’re all intrinsically different. Some of the most popular series right now do this, and it makes me incredibly happy that the Morganville Vampire Series avoids this entirely.

I actually loved this book, and those of you who've read some of my reviews, particually the Shadow Souls one, would know that its A LOT coming from me. I am very hard to please. This is probably one of my favourites from the Morganville Vampires Series. I'm not gonna waste my time retelling the story, I don't really do that unless I think it contributes to my review, but I have to say that the whole story was amazing, and I love the fact that Claire is really smart and a bit of a geek.
