How to Make Good Pictures: A Text Book for the Every-Day Photographer is an odd little vintage piece of photography history. I have a copy of the 1936 edition, and its chemistry and instructions are very out-of-date. The pictures have a certain period charm (my edition is full of '20s and early '30s images), but are fairly ordinary, not to say banal, for all that. This book was never cutting-edge.

While somewhat dated if you love photography or even vintage goodies then this book is worth reading. It sets out the principles of how to compose photographs to tips and tricks. Certainly spending some time reading if you ever come across it.

Sooooo vintage! Still great foundations for the beginner photographer, just ignore the film references and enjoy the entertainingly dated adages ;)
