the editor of these narratives really struck a chord. it is from people who were in bondage only in texas but the spectrum of accounts is remarkable. from the most wretched treatment i could imagine to the- i dare say- banal, this collection hits home what history ignores; there is no way to define slavery. once this 'private property' was brought home law had little to no regard, it was the personalities at hand (master, slave, their families, etc.) that defined the institution. beyond that, yo ...more
