While the book is well-written and really reads at a brisk pace, I had some issues with it. Mainly, I did not like the character of Marina Esposito. Wah-wah-wah, bad stuff happens to poor Marina. And her policeman-boyfriend wasn't "there" for her when she needed to be (even though he had a totally legit excuse and tried to call her a million times to let her know. It's his fault, and she'll never forget it. Except she will, because she loves him! Maybe. She needs time, but not the kind of time w...more

Definitely not a recommended murder mystery for pregnant mothers, Tania Carver (the pseudonym of this British husband-and-wife writing duo) created a grisly thriller with plenty of twists and turns to the plot. The book frustrated me a bit in the beginning - I had to check (and doublecheck) that this was indeed the first book in the series. Many comments referred back to one previous case in particular, lending the feeling that this was the second book and not the first. But, both UK and America...more

Blurb From Goodreads

A shocking double-murder scene greets Detective Inspector Philip Brennan when he is called to a flat in Colchester. Two women are viciously cut open and laying spreadeagled, one tied to the bed, one on the floor. The woman on the bed has had her stomach cut into and her unborn child is missing.

But this is the third time Phil and his team have seen such an atrocity. Two other pregnant women have been killed in this way and their babies taken from them. No-one can imagine what...more

This is the debut novel of Tania Carver - read a recommendation for her now 3 book series in my Seattle Mystery Bookshop newsletter. Read this in one sitting - New Year's Eve is too noisy to sleep -- and wanted to keep on reading. Held my interest from page one. Like the principle character, a British cop named Phil Brennan, who suffers from panic attacks, seems to have a heart, and loves his foster parents. Didn't connect so much with the female lead character, but the characters continue in th...more

So last week I was at the library and I saw this book (but it had a different cover) and the reviews looked good and moody. I didn't really read anything, just picked it up as my book of the week. It was until later that evening when I was cuddling up for sleep that I read the first chapter.... the first chapter that covers the gristly murder of a pregnant woman! Just want I need when I'm 7 months pregnant and trying to sleep!!

Edgardo told me to immediately put the book down... but now I had to...more

Sometimes I wait a little while before writing my review to give myself some time to really think it over. I didn't want to do that in this case. I didn't want to forget how horrifying this book was.

This had to be one of the most graphically disturbing books I've read in a long time. Violence to pregnant women is kind of a given from the synopsis. I was prepared for that. But the violence shown at times towards the babies I had a hard time dealing with. Then there was the issue of the self mutil...more

This book is not for the faint of heart. The scenes are graphic, the story line frightening and twisted. DI Brennan is called to the scene of a murder and a kidnapping. The kidnapping is of a baby that was torn from its mothers body. To help with the search DI Brennan's boss calls in psychologist Marina Esposito who on a previous case had an affair with the DI. Now she is back, 5 months pregnant and hiding that from her team. She tries to hold it together as she helps to investigate the gruesome...more

Having met the author and heard some stories about the genesis of this book, I was interested enough to seek it out and read it. I enjoyed reading a book set in a place I'd recently visited, too - it's always fun when you can picture the setting (Colchester, UK).
The book is at times rather violent, and I found some aspects rather irritating, I have to admit - it did read in places as though there had been a previous book in the series, although the backstory was covered by the end of the book. T...more

A gruesome double murder greets DI Phillip Brennan. It has some of the hallmarks of two earlier murders. So it is kind of a surprize that the two earlier murders weren't really connected until this third one.

Part of the plot involves a cop who is a bit of ladies man. The cop had a prior relationship with one of the suspects/witnesses. Resolution of this conflict comes with a price. But resolution of this conflict also plays into resolution of the murders.

This has a good plot, with several surpri...more

I'm going to start right out by saying this is a brutally violent book. Nothing sweet or cozy going on here. Not a lot of tea by the aga. Now it's not quite to Minette Walters levels, I finished this one. And I'm quite glad I did. This is a very finely done police procedural; really gruesome crimes that are hard to stomach but not wallowed in. None of the detectives made me fall in love with them. No Wexfords, no Barb Havers here. Phil, the lead, isn't bad but he's also not that engaging. Really...more

I love few things in life more than a good ol’ British detective and mystery story. Give me Ruth Rendell and Elizabeth George (especially her earlier books) any day. So, imagine how thrilled I was when I found a promising book at the library the other day. I colored myself excited with Magic Markers. (Yes, the librarians looked at me weird, but then they usually do.)

The book, “The Surrogate,” by Tania Carver succeeded on many levels. I would buy her future books. But one pervasive issue keeps th...more

Someone is trying to find themselves a new baby and they will find any means to get it. Finding their prey then capturing it gives them such a buzz, then when eventually claiming their prize, a baby from its mothers womb, it the ultimate goal.

Captivating read which never gives away too many clues leaves you guessing right to the end. Of course like most crim novels there is a token love story added in to keep the book long enough.

Brilliant debut novel and hopefully there will be lots more to com...more

A debut novel, THE SURROGATE could be quite confrontational reading for many people. The image of unborn babies torn from their dead mother's bodies - dead themselves, or more shockingly possibly still alive is going to shock. Undoubtedly.

DI Phil Brennan, a loveless and abused child, risen to a policeman driven by a sense of responsibility, shocked himself at the nature of the crime that he is investigating is undoubtedly going to engender sympathy in readers.

The idea that there could be a woman...more

I'd gotten so used to reading less-than-great thrillers lately, that I'd forgotten what it was like to read a really, really good one. This book was fantastic.

Set in a small town in England, the police are desperately searching for a serial killer who is targeting pregnant women in order to steal their babies to create his own "family." There's a lot of fast paced action and unexpected plot twists -- I literally didn't see the final revelation coming.

I've already put Carver's next book on my "...more

The Surrogate was a perfect combination of crime, investigation and love. Totally action packed, I couldn't put it down! My first impression of this book was that it would be too gore-ish and strange, but the way it was written was perfect. Giving good insights into each personality you really get to know the characters. The twist and turns where a real shock, letting me feel many emotions whilst reading. I even shed a tear at the end.
I promise you won't regret reading it.

This book was set in England, which I liked. It was amusing to me when the characters referenced things like Derek Acorah or the band Glasvegas. I quite liked the writing style but unfortunately spent a good two thirds of the book hoping that two of the main characters would get hit by a bus because I found them so deeply irritating. However, I liked the twists and the way they were foreshadowed and I would happily read Tania Carver again.

The basic premise of this book is a bit over the top evil for my usual murder mystery taste--isolated country folk who rape their children and steal their neighbors babies go rogue in the big city, murdering pregnant women to get their unborn children (isn't it easier to snag them after they are born, and much less messy). Once you get over those hurdles, the book is very well done, and I would definitely read another with these characters.

I picked it up in a book sale because the title and blurb appealed - a killer who targets heavily pregnant women, brutally removing their unborn babies; and the criminal profiler believes there's a woman involved who's desperate for children ...
The story was gripping and there was plenty of suspense to keep the pages turning, but I'm afraid the writing style detracted from my overall rating. Oh, and I did guess the ending far too early.

This is the first Tanya Carver book I've read and although I quite enjoyed it I'm not sure if I'll be rushing out the get her next book!!! Its about a pair of crazies who kill pregnant women and steal their unborn babies out of their womb!!! So yes this is quite a graphic disturbing book!! This does not normally put me off but I found some parts of this book distressing. It is fast paced and not badly written but the crimes were so grotesque that I now find myself wanting to real some girly chic...more

This book is a psychological thriller and it does not disappoint. Not for the faint of heart as it has some graphic brutal murders. But the part that I found fascinating is the profiling and the attempts to figure out what is going on in the mind of the killer. There are many unexpected developments and it was difficult to put down. Well worth the read if you enjoy psychological thrillers.

This. book. was. great.
Starts off a little choppy with the main character, Marina referring to an event that is not explained in detail til about halfway through the book.

Plot twists and suspense, I liked it a lot, and I don't usually pick up book series, because I find they are usually the same book written with different characters and settings.

This was definitely a keeper.

Good storyline but perhaps a little unbelievable? I really enjoyed reading the book and found it hard to put down. It's one of those good books where the story grips you all the time and doesn't peter off leaving the reader unsure about where the story's going. I found the story to be gripping from start to finish; an accomplishment not many authors have the ability to do. I never felt the need to skip pages to see where the story was heading.

The killer in this book is killing pregnant woman and taking their unborn babies. The question to answer is why - well and of course, who? Marina Esposito is brought in to help with the murder and must get over the other issues with Phil in order to figure this out. I really enjoyed the reader of this book and found myself wanting more. I believe there's more in the series so I look forward to them.

Unsettling...and not necessarily in a good way. I read a review somewhere that said Tania Carver (what a name for a thrill writer) never resorts to gratuitous violence. I'm not sure I agree with that assessment. This book is very violent, filled with misogyny and bleak to the point of being depressing. The female protagonist is a strong character except when she rather irrationally expects her love interest to swoop in from nowhere to rescue her from a couple of seriously bad guys. Since this is...more
