I needed a nice easy read. My brain has been on overdrive so I picked this off my bookshelf as I continue my quest to read all the hundreds of books I own that I have yet to read. I was not quite sure what to make of the book to start. I knew it was going to be cheesy and appeal to a lower level audience than what I am used to. However, I found myself really liking this book.

The things I enjoyed were the humorous bits, the language used, and the story line. I am beginning to think More...

Any librarian who has spent time in the children's department of the library (or elementary or middle school librarian) will tell you that Captain Underpants is a constantly asked for series. And for many years librarians had no new news to tell fans who would come in every week asking when the next book by Dav Pilkey would be out. But finally this year librarians were able to do a happy dance because Dav Pilkey gave us a new book for these eager readers.

“Scientists think they know everything,” the authors of Ook and Gluck tell the reader, “But they don’t! They just make guesses based on evidense theyv’e already discovered. Forchenately, we have a time machine. So we discovered lots of evidense that scientists don’t know about... yet!” So really, this is the world’s first completely factual proven-by-time-machine graphic novel history (and future) almost-textbook. Which is awesome.

Christmas present for my little caveman. Unlike Captain Underpants and Ricky Ricotta and His MIghty Robot, this Dav Pilkey creation is entirely in graphic novel form. For us old fogies, that means it's a long comic book. One thing I noticed right away is the intentional misspellings that are supposed to make the book feel like two little boys wrote it. Well, it bothered me a little, and my Asperger's son some too. But not enough to not buy the book! We're just so happy Dav Pilkey wrote some More...

Reason for Reading: My ds read aloud to me as his reader.

I received this book as an *extra* from Scholastic, along with one I had requested to review. I was not entirely impressed, I'm sorry to say. Neither I nor my children (up to 21 yo) have ever read a Dave Pilkey book and there has been a reason for that. I admit I do have certain la-di-da standards when it comes to what books I allow to pass through my children's hands and yes, you could call me a "book snob" in that sen More...

There's stupid...and then there's stupid that works. Dav Pilkey* is a master of the second category. I read Captain Underpants back in the day (3rd grade, 4th grade, something like that)and loved it, so I tried out this spin-off book. The back of my mind picked up on the old cliches from that series (the maimed signs, "before we tell you that story, we have to tell you this story") and, while the artistic side of me was sad he wasn't more creative, it was like snuggling a much-loved te More...

I don't understand how people can disparage books that get kids reading.

If the grammar and spelling aren't always correct, isn't that in character for Mssrs. Beard and Hutchins? Aren't young readers discerning enough to realize that? Furthermore, could it not even help them to distinguish bad syntax and orthographics from good?

If the humor is low-brow, isn't that enticing to a certain audience (like me)?

And haven't we gotten over the 1950s censorial and More...

I read this one after a recommendation from one of my students (7th grade boy), who could not put the book down and said it was "so funny." I just could not make it past page 50 (I try to follow Nancy Pearl's 'rule of 50'--if the book is not grabbing you after 50 pages, set it aside!). While I appreciate some graphic novels, this one was absolutely awful. Clearly, some kids will like it. I can imagine kids (maybe grade 3 and up?) looking for an 'easy read' (or very reluctant readers) r More...

Having gone through all the Captain Underpants books with my son, we moved on to Ook and Gluk. It's crude, rude, and even a bit lewd; in essence, it's all the things an eight year old boy just might appreciate in a book. It may be a bit crass, but on the other hand, my son will willingly pick it up and read it on his own. I did enjoy the story (yes, there is an actual plot) and especially loved the Flip-O-Rama parts. I must acknowledge that the Dav Pilkey books were introduced to my family b More...

Dinosaurs! Robots! Time travel! Kung fu! Puke! What's not to love, especially if you're a boy, in George Beard and Harold Hutchins - uh, I mean, Dav Pilkey's latest offering.

Pilkey manages to lovingly replicate a boy's way of writing a story, complete with misspellings and plenty of deus ex machinas, as he tells the story of two time-traveling cave men and their efforts to halt the evil-doings of a totalitarian chief and his ancestor from the future.

Like Captain Under More...

Can you give four stars to a book you don't like? Well, I just did because I know this book will be read to pieces by my students! It will never really get to be on our shelves, except maybe for the first two minutes. The moment it gets discovered it will be circulating continuously. The large group of Captain Underpants fans among my patrons have been waiting so long for a new book by Dav Pilkey. Now it is finally here, this time as a full graphic novel, with a new made-up language (cave-man st More...

this was a great beginning to a new series! it is similar enough to the other ones that there will be that familiarity to the book. it is definitely different enough that you don't feel that you've read the story before, though. there is always going to be the parts that annoy me or make it hard for me to read - the misspellings and the cave speak, but that is part of the charm and meant to spotlight the adults that are no fun and too old! as long as my students don't take their spelling and spe More...

Punching, kicking, name-calling, misspellings, jokes at other's expense, and puking. Lots of puking. All await you in this, the first adventure of best friends Ook and Gluk from a fictional caveman past. Lest you think this story is bereft of any redeeming qualities, I will say there is a whole section of rhyming and one chapter about the spiritual benefits of kung-fu. I can't imagine a kid who would not find something funny in this book. At the same time, there is plenty to offend, and pa More...

This was another one of those graphic novels by Pilkey that pretended to have been written and illustrated by his Captain Underpants characters Harold and George. It was a rather amusing, absurd romp through terrible caveman grammar, badly written dialogue, silly situations (like mecha dinosaurs and defeating evil businessmen with kung fu), and it had its silly flip-book violence. What I like best about it is how well Dav Pilkey duplicates some of the mistakes/styles children actually produce More...

Really 4.5 stars (4 from me, 5 from my son). My son LOVES Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series so of course we read this as soon as we could get our hands on it. Overall, this was a big hit in our house that I’m sure will be read many more times. There were even a few spots that made me laugh out loud. As long as you’re a grown up who can find humor in a book written by two fictional fourth grade boys – go ahead and read it with your child. If on the other hand, you are a fourth grade boy, I’m More...

A completely silly and totally fun graphic novel for tweens! These cavemen are definitely not average - they travel to the future, learn kung fu, and defeat all kinds of evil rulers. The flip-o-rama pages were probably my favorite parts, despite being seriously cheesy. Fans of Captain Underpants will definitely want to get their hands on Dav Pilkey's new series. As someone who loved The Adventures of Captain Underpants as a kid, I had to read this book. It was a wonderful jolt of the "good old days" with outrageous humor.

It started out with a disclaimer from Professor Gaylord M. Sneedly who won the The Most Brilliantest Science Guy of the Whole Wide World Award. That was a nice touch, and I was hooked from that moment on.

The format was similar to Captain Underpants, like a comic book with occasional flip-o-ramas (just a More...

Ook and Gluk are cavemen in the year 500,001 BC. When an evil corporation from the year 2222 AD shows up and starts pillaging their resources and enslaving the cavepeople, Ook and Gluk head into the future to save the day. It's a madcap action-adventure comic book with tons of potty humor. Written by Dav Pilkey as if it had been written by 2 fourth-grade boys, the comic is rife with misspellings and chock full of fun. I wouldn't be surprised if it inspires young readers to create their own c More...

Welcome back Dav Pilkey!

A couple of things to point out:

1) George Beard and Harold Hutchins are not real people. They did not write the book. They are the two fourth-grade boys in the Captain Underpants series. Pilkey is the author, but made the book look like it was drawn and written by kids.

2) Because the book is supposed to be written by two fourth-grade boys, there are several misspellings and grammatical errors on top of the expected "cave-man spe

I love this book so much it is very very very very.....funny to read. When I read this book I couldn't put it down because I was laughing so hard. This book is about two best friend who grew up together and get in trouble together in in their adventure to find the kung fu master. I wouldn't recommend this book to children who just learn how to read because it has incorrect spelling in the book. I think the author intended to do so just to make it fun to read. Love this book

Dude. It has cavemen with afros. And kung-fu! What more could you possibly need? Fans of Captain Underpants may find themselves initially a bit baffled by this very strange if amusing story about two cavemen who accidentally get sent to the future, where they are trained in the art of kung-fu by a wise master. If you don't like Pilkey's books then this will not appeal, but if you have a soft spot for wacky humor, this is a fun ride. - B

I have been looking forward to reading this book for about a month. I’m a huge Dav Pilkey fan. It kills me to say this, but I did not like this book! I like Captain Underpants and his other series. I just don’t know the audience for this story. I showed it to some of my biggest Dav Pilkey fans at school and they couldn’t read it without a lot of help. The idea is great, just not in this format.

I was excited about the prospect of time travel in this book, but found the story to be rather dull compared to Pilkey's Capt Underpants stories. Two stars for the action-packed Flip o' Rama pages and the parody of prehistoric hierarchy. One extra star for the brilliant device of the capitalist having to travel back in time (500,000 BCE!) to harvest natural resources that no longer exist in his time.

The adventures of ook and Gluk is an excellent graphic novel book. Boys enjoy reading the book and provoke their laughter. It is typically about two boys who traveled to Ohio in 500,001 B.C. by their past and future machine. My boys like this book and enjoy reading it again and again. I think these kinds of graphic novels motivate boys to read so this book is a good start for them.

I don't care if I sound like an old, O.C.D., English teacher and book snob; because I am. While I could go off on a rant about this...I don't approve of nine year olds shouting SUCKAAASSSS! and I think the constant over-played misspellings just encourages my kids to write like fools...I'll let it go. One word says it best: DUMB. On that note...any goofy little boy will love it.

As grownup and former English teacher, I should be appalled by this latest Dav Pilkey atrocity, but...

Me like! Me give to boys in liberry. They laff to! (Excuse me while I practice my caveman language, aka Cavemonics.)

As with many a good cartoon work, this one has many layers, many which will only be understood and appreciated by the adult readers who give it a fair shot.

Max (8) REAAAALLLLY wanted me to read this, a first for him, so I did. What can I say? It got a few lols which is more credit than I can give 9 out of the last 10 books I've read. There's time travel, Eastern philosophy, science, math, business and of course there's a baby dino that pukes into the mouth of the antagonist. All the elements of good high brow lit.

Some grownups frown on the spelling and grammatical liberties - but reluctant readers just LOVE the cartoon style, silly situations, and potty humor. *I* think it's perfectly suitable for for my nieces and nephew, and it may just foster a bond with books. It's great to read Dav Pilkey again - I have been a fan of his for a long time. Sending to Owen (7) at camp.

Didn't think I'd ever like a graphic novel MORE than Captain Underpants but leave it to Dav Pilkey! He even included some more Flip-O-Rama! This is a hilarious story of 2 cave - kids and their adventures to save their town. Kids will love the humor and adults (unless you're really uptight) will love the parody - like a Simpsons episode but better!
