well, to put it in succint way, the book is like modern day Frankenstien novel. As usual, Robin Cook grapped the hearts of his reader with this book. It's medical thriller as Robin Cook does best. But the only flaw I could find about this book is that you could guess quite easily who's the villain as least that was what happended to me. But, it's my favourite thriller novel despite the fact that I could predict who's the villain was and if you want to know more you should go and find out about yo...more

"Somehow she would have to face this last demon child, and with Joe's help, end forever the nightmare that her husband had begun."

These were the words of Marsha Frank, thinking of the experiment that her husband, Frank, had done at his laboratory, that had caused her son, along with several other children to become geniuses. Unfortunately, this also caused them to become so smart that the children were able to realize how much they could accomplish, and they would take out anybody who tried to g...more

É um policial médico...more

This book reveals the ethics of genetic engineering.

Victor Frank and his wife Marsha took help of surrogate mother to get their child VJ, who is abnormally genius, his genius being a result of his experiments.

Victor, a biologist and owner of the biochemical company Chimera Inc., injects the egg implanted in his wife with an agent called Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) into chromosome six, which causes the baby to grow more neurons than usual, as a result making them super intelligent. Their son, VJ,...more

It was a thrilling read and I finished the book in half a week. It was the classic message of science vs ethics. However, the plot was a little too predictable and I did not like the ending. VJ was called a monster a lot towards the end of the book. Maybe he was a monster in 1987 back when the book was written, but by today's standards, he will probably just be called an unethical (young) scientist.

Some food for thought by VJ:
"Morality cannot rule science because morality is relative and theref...more

I vaguely remember reading this book many years ago, but it had to have been a really long time, because I remembered none of it as I read it, it was just that the title sounded familiar, and I know I've read other books by Robin Cook in the past. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and actually found myself getting frustrated because I could not read fast enough. The story grabbed my imagination from the first page and then dragged me to the end, barely able to catch my breath. There is als...more

Good book, would definitely recommend it. I was able to guess alot of the "surprises" but there were some twists that were completely unpredictable. Cook does a great job of describing a science that can be a very hard thing to understand and putting it in terms that everyone can understand. It still might be difficult for those who do not have a background in science to understand. If you can look past those parts and just enjoy the book for what it is then you will have no problem enjoying the...more

I released this book in to the wild via bookcrossing.com and here was my review of this turd from back then:

6/9/2003 I have read the first two chapters and thus far am not impressed. Apparently Larry King has said, "Holds you page after page!" Yes...he really did use an exclamation point; screaming about the book's hold on the reader. What a freakshow.

My problem is that Robin Cook uses too many "had had"'s (e.g. pg. 5 "If he had had such experience...", pg. 7 "...her Doctor had had to perform......more

I thought this book was awesome. I plan to study neurology has a profession so any thing about the brain makes me jump with excitement. One thing I really like about this book is that it does have a lot of scientific backing, giving the erie possibility that this could one day happen. While I was a bit unhappy with the fact that the book did drag on somewhat and it was clear who the antagonist was, the book still gripped me with how these feats where accomplished. All in all, awesome novel.

It was okay - but you can tell it was written several years ago. Maybe it would have been better if I had read it back when it was written
Mutations is about a Dr. Victor Frank whose love for science ultimately conflicts with his better judgment...he mutates dna in his own son - VJ. And years later he learns what his interference has done. The story starts when VJ is 10 - and Victor and Marsha (his mother) are just beginning to realize the true problems that their son has

A fascinating look into what is potentially possible with genetic engineering. What I love about Robin Cook is he really challenges some ethical issues from the outside looking in. I believe this book was written in the 70's which makes it even more interesting to me, because I am sure alot of what he details in this book has already happened or is happening...

I picked this book for an assignment in biology class: we had to read a medical sci-fi. So Robin Cook was an obvious choice. I was quite excited about it at first, but soon I discovered that it wasn't for me. Not wanting to generalize, I'd like to think it was just this one book, but I haven't read anything else by this author since, nor of this genre.

The book read like a TV Movie. It was a quick read and the plot was pretty predictable. From the start it is clear who the villain is, so the rest of the book focuses on how the villain did his evil deeds and how he will be stopped.

However, the setting is in Boston, so it may appeal to locals to hear of various places mentioned in the Boston area.

I've never read any robin cook before. This was a very cookie cutter book with very little character depth. However he incorporated lots of cutting edge genetics technology from 1989, almost all of which is now obsolete. That in itself was worth the read.
If you don't find that interesting, don't read this book. You'll be bored to tears.

This book was ok. I would not reccomend this book because it wasn't that detailed. But all in all it was ok.

The plot is when 2 people want to have a baby. A scientist named Victor wants to have a perfect baby. He make a baby and puts it into a surrogate mother. The mother had the baby and gave it to Victor. When bringing the baby home they were scared. About 5 years later the oldest son Caleb dies. V.J. killed Caleb because V.J. wanted to be the only baby in the family. Then V.J. shows Victor t...more

What can I say? Is this really a three star book? Probably not but it if you are looking for a fun, medical thriller this book meets expectations; therefore, I consider it a success within its genre. It's a good read for the beach or when you need a break from studies or work.

This book was interesting from a scientific/technical standpoint just like all of the author's books. I started guessing about halfway through what was going on and then it got really, really creepy - borderline uncomfortable - which I guess was the point. Still a very good and interesting book though, and if it isn't already a movie I can see how it would be one.

This one held my attention and although I could kind of predict the ending, it did have a little unexpected twist. The consequences of genetic manipulation are fascinating to think about, and the horrors that could be created are so very real in this book.
Betsy
It literally had me at the edge of my seat, even though the plot is somewhat predictable, perhaps I see too much tv and there are similarities to some movies. Nevertheless I liked it, Cook never disappoints. Highly recommend it!

As normal Robin Cooks book Mutation was very good reading. To think what the world will be like someday. All of this type stuff is bound to happen - but will it be controlled??? what would you do if you had a son like VJ???? Interesting question.
Will keep looking for more of Robin Cooks books as I really enjoy them.
Steph
It was an entertaining and fast read but not as intriguing as other genetic novels I have read. Half-way through the book, I had figured out how the book would end, which made it more difficult to actually finish the book.
Esteban
Excellent book

pretty spooky and nicely developed

keeps the reader tense and anxious at the same time afraid to turn the next page

Altough the end was somehow expected

8/10

Must surely be high on the list of Robin Cook's underrated works. I was just introduced to mutation in my biology class when I started reading this book and was very impressed by the time I finished it.

Pretty typical Robin Cook. Unfortunately this one was a little too easy to figure out, so finishing it wasn't as enjoyable. His books are definitely in the casual, easy to pick up and put down category for me.
Eryn Rynex
it was good but not his best book. I figured out the 'who don it' too soon and got frustrated with how long the book dragged out. His books always seem to end as a cliff hanger. This book didn't disappoint.
Kristin Cook
Really fast read. Quite interesting, even though a little of the technology mentioned was a bit on the antiquated side(book was written in 1988), it was very believable. One of Robin Cook's better books.

I just started 2 nights ago and am already almost done, if that tells you what a page turner it has been! Great medical thriller... I had low expectations for this but am so far very pleased!
