In trying to review LOVER MINE two words keep popping into my head; Amazing and Damn… just damn. How can I honestly put into words how much I loved this story and how sad I am that it’s over? Following a year long wait JR Wards 8th instalment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood finally made its way into my eager little hands. In trying to review LOVER MINE two words keep popping into my head; Amazing and Damn… just damn. How can I honestly put into words how much I loved this story and how sad I am that it’s over? Following a year long wait JR Wards 8th instalment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood finally made its way into my eager little hands. At 512 pages LOVER MINE is huge (with a fantastic cover) and I’m happy to report that it does not disappoint, in fact with John Mathews long awaited story the WARDen positively shines.

Fans are given exactly what we’ve been waiting for with ever evolving storylines, multiple POV’s, surprises, tragedies, plot twists, ass-kicking action,(Xhex much) humour and oh the romance. Completed here with erotic, blush-worthy love scenes and of course the inevitable struggle and heartache. I can tell you that this story brought me to tears more than once and not for the reasons you might expect. All of this awesomeness has been wrapped up with Wards unique style of writing, complete with product placements, rap music, unique street language, multiple f-bombs and a whole new batch of cool Wardisms I can’t wait to start using, you feel me.

The series is brought full circle within this book with loose ends cleverly tied together and resolutions brought to story threads we’ve had growing and brewing since the beginning. Sadly I realized that even with Ward continuing indefinitely JM/Darius will be the last of the original brothers to have his story told and that with this book being red, just like book 1 (Dark Lover) she’s given us book ends of a sort.

With us since the beginning, in this instalment we finally get John Mathew (and Darius‘s) story. Of all the characters John is the one we have the greatest sense of and have invested the most time in, having watched him change from a scrawny, neglected and abused pre-trans into an enormous, and angry male with a ton of fricken baggage. His pairing with the half Sympath Xhex has been in the works for some time now and with her abduction in the end of (Lover Avenged) we have the perfect place to begin their story. (Which I’m not going to give away) I will say however that I was pleased to see reflections of the sweet, sensitive John we remember (only now oozing sex appeal) and witness a softer side of Xhex. As always their path to HEA is not an easy one but its fun and sexy as hell watching them open up to each other and get there.

As a whole the storyline blew my mind. With three very separate and distinct running plotlines, (which at first had me wondering, where the hell is this going?) Ward manages to merge all the puzzle pieces together into WOW, bringing us deliciously full circle. Darker and more serious than past books my only real complaint would be the lack of banter between the Brothers and the Brothers as a whole. The moments that we’re given are excellent and while they’re all represented to a degree (some more than others) I insatiably craved more and truly missed them. Qhuinn and Blay, each now with their own POV manage to somewhat fill the gap who along with Saxton bring a different degree of heartache, sexiness and hot mess to the mix. Lash is also back as the Lessening societies leader and surprisingly awesome here as he takes things to a whole new gooey level of evil.

In the end Ward leaves us smiling with contentment, with new characters emerging and events opening up for future stories that I can’t wait to discover. I just wish it wasn’t so far away because I find that after getting just 3 days with the BDB its already time to leave them again and I’m not quite ready to let them go yet. Okay...It goes without saying that I’m a total hussy for the Brothers, that the BDB series is my favorite, and that the ‘WARD’en is brilliant, and I totally expected this to be another no-brainer 5-star read. But unfortunately, it juuust didn’t quite get there for me (shocking...I know!), mainly since I felt a little bit cheated in the romance department due to all the Lash/Lesser distraction and because there was just so much filler. I mean, Lash’s evil man...more 4 ½ stars – Vampire/Paranormal Romance

Okay...It goes without saying that I’m a total hussy for the Brothers, that the BDB series is my favorite, and that the ‘WARD’en is brilliant, and I totally expected this to be another no-brainer 5-star read. But unfortunately, it juuust didn’t quite get there for me (shocking...I know!), mainly since I felt a little bit cheated in the romance department due to all the Lash/Lesser distraction and because there was just so much filler. I mean, Lash’s evil manifestation through physical deterioration and mental decline into total cuckoo-ville got waaay too much word time. And what was with the completely irrelevant haunted southern mansion sub-plot?! I could have done without that interruption for sure. I also felt like the flashback sub-plot with Darius and Tohr was a bit disruptive to the overall flow and pace of the story, but at least it tied in really well at the end. Although I’m still utterly confused about whether John Matthew is supposed to be Darius reincarnated or is he just his son?

I’ve always liked John Matthew and ached for his suffering and found Xhex to be a mysterious, intriguing, and kick-butt heroine, but I just didn’t picture them becoming a BDB power couple like Zsadist and Bella, Rhage and Mary, or Wrath and Beth. However, I was very pleasantly surprised and totally captivated by their intense connection, personal struggles, emotional turmoil and growth, and journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and healing. I just wish there had been more time devoted to their relationship and romance because it was so complicated, touching, volatile yet tender, passionate, heart-wrenching, and blistering hot!

By far, my favorite aspect of Lover Mine was the explosive sexual tension and volatile emotional conflict between Qhuinn and Blaylock...YOWZA! They (Qhuay) flat-out stole the show, IMO. I just kept wishing and hoping that Ward would give us a nice, fat, juicy Qhuinn/Blay steak! I expect (fingers crossed) that they will get their own story, or at least a novella, at some point, and I really hope there’s a big HEA coming their way. There better not be a Marissa and/or Jane sell out this time either...I want a Qhuinn/Blay mating, darnit!

So, although this wasn’t my favorite or a perfect 5-star read, the BDB series still kicks major ass! Now, I just wish there wasn’t such a long, agonizing wait until the next book! 4 ½...almost 5 stars!

And whew boy, what a sexy, hot cover! I love the nail scratch marks on his chest!

However, after eight books in this series, I have a serious problem. Well, frankly I had a problem from the first book but I've already reviewed that one.

I wasn't expecting much out of this book, as I am not a huge fan of Xhex. I like John Matthew a lot actually, but he's not my favorite. In fact I wish we'd seen more of the Blay/Qhuinn/Saxton drama.

And typical of the WARDen to make us wait til the last 10 pages to learn who. Maybe he'll play a bigger role in the next book?

We last saw Xhex being kidnapped by Lash, son of the Omega, in Rehvenge's book, but it was like she fell off the grid. When we find her, she is Lash's new playtoy, and he tends to break his toys. But not Xhex, he can't break her. And in true Xhex style, she frees herself. (Very Xena Warrior Princess of her).

For the first time in all 8 BDB books, I wasn't annoyed at the lesser sub-plots. I have always hated the amount of shifting points of view. Usually the boring but important enough to read series of chapters that i have to trudge through all from some lessers viewpoint, just to have him killed and have to trudge through some other lesser's pov. But this time, Lash's pov was always interesting, and the subplots of Payne and Wrath were welcome, as well as the Chosen and No'One.

At first I didn't like the Darius journal sections. I now understand them and think they were very worthy of the plot, but I feel like Ward went overboard trying to make it sound formal and feel like several hundred years ago. It was stilted and hard to read. But I loved how it was intertwined into the storyline of Xhex and JM-wow talk about fated! We see JM with Darius' memories, and Xhex's sympath side always sees JM as having a split emotional grid-I pictured it like two auras split, but housed in the same body. And Lash's energy ball snapped it into place. When Tohr meets No'One at the end, and sees her with Xhex-holy cow! I never saw that one coming!

I'd like to see the SV come back into this whole mess she's created and start being a bit more proactive-it's like she's fading away and drifting. In the first couple books she was a force to be reckoned with, now -meh.

So, yeah,awesome book, JM and Xhex were good, but there was so much more going on that I wasn't bored with them, or solely focused on them. All the weird pieces fit in and made sense, and I loved the fated aspect of Darius/JM/Tohr/Xhex. Very cool.

Oh John Matthew. This man takes me away. Though he has many demons that follow him every minute of his life, JM is a male of worth. And Xhex, her story is beautiful. I love her strength and her brute force, but I also love how she allows JM into her world. In Lover Mine, we get a look into her past and we also experience her love for John as she falls hard for him. I've been rooting for this couple since the very beginning and I loved every moment of it.

I would still give this book 5 stars, in fact I think I even loved it a tiny bit more.

I wanted to like Xhex more and I really did this time.

I still didn't like the ghost story, really thought it was just ridiculous. Buuuuut this just didn't stop my love of this book - ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT.

OMG!!!
I loved it. I must say there was a part at the middle of the book that made me doubt if I would give a 5 stars rating to this book but that doubt was over once I got to the ending of the book. Ohh in some was it was difficult for me to give this 5 stars but in others it was easy. So why the hesitation? well I have to say that certain parts of this story niggled me whilst others just grabed my attention, plus I couldn't put it down which is definately not the way of a 3 star read. Qhuinn and Bly, oh I had high hopes for this story, I was looking forward to it moving forward, whether angsty or passionate, in way that engaged the reader, however what I ended up with was a story that if I didn't know the intended outcome for these two would have led me to beleive that Qhuinn was infact setting himself up for a hea with a female.....in other words I felt their parts had been wiiten sometime ago when Qhuinns HEA was female BUT kept because they would actually fit with the later outcome which we know is a HEA with Blay, this felt wrong to me. I found their story boring which is a shame because it has such 'potential for passion' in a big way. Qhuinn with his mopping around pushing Blay away, even after Blay told him it was ok for Qhuin to stay with him "just say yes and I'll stay" or words to that effect! I wasn't looking for a HEA in this book or even a happy happy but I feel their story could've been better, the bottom line is for me ....it didn't feel as though it had been written with their later outcome in mind.

Lash, Great character loads of potential,who ended up with a storyline that felt like it was just padding for the rest of the story . Xhex wasn't with him for long, he was supposed to evil, wicked and do cruel things to her....well I'm sorry but at the end of the day he was weak and boring. What was the point of him and the whole Lesser thing in this book?

So now to all the stuff that engaged me:-

Darius and Tohr, what a great story, I loved the way it flowed, loved where it led up to and best of all loved the way it explained the relationship between the two and how that's mirrored in the current world with John and Tohr. It threw up a good few surprises which didn't feel as though they'd been hashed together just to pad out the rest of the book, bringing a new character into the stories who we've met briefly before. This little journey out of the current day was well thought out and a delightful insight. It's also had the ability for The Warden to bring Tohr back to the story, he's been in these books from the start and togther with his Shellan Wellsie had, at one time, the promise of a great sub story, sadly The Warden saw fit to kill Wellsie off thus leaving Tohr bereft and alone, I suspect that after she did this she realized what a great character Tohr had the potential to be hence his re~introduction with his own little story within a story.

Rathbone, Hey he's great, I loved this little detour. I'd thought that Murhder (Rathbone) was coming back to fight with and against John for Xhexs affections, but no, instead he's sequestered miles away in his own beautiful home in North Carolina, loving the ladies in the form of a ghost, great great storyline there, and handing out wise sage advice to human males who can't see what's infront of them......Muhrder wicked and evil where did that come from, Murhder fighting John for Xhex?

John and Xhex, awww I loved their romance and whilst I didn't think there was as much of it as there could've been, it told their story beautifully. Xhex changed slightly in this story from previous ones ,she lost some of her 'hardness' whilst John moved from rash, brash young man to a male with the attitude of a Brother, I guess it's just the Wardens way of moving them on as doubt we'll see very much of them, in the way we have before, now that their story is complete.

So all in all despite the negatives this book engaed me, kept me turing the pages (and no I didn't skip Lash and his drug taking (what was that all about??) nor did I skip Qhuinn and Blay), and drew me in for the next installment.

I finished this a couple of days ago, and I'm still thinking about it. First of, I really came to like Xhex. Still not my first choice for John Matthew, but it was the one he wanted so... I skipped over most of the Reality T.V. part. Like really skipped over, this may bite me in the butt later on, but it just interuppted the flow every time! I think I enjoyed this even more the second time around because I wasn't speeding through. I particularly liked how Ward brought this whole story in a giant circle with pasts meeting presents.

In trying to review LOVER MINE two words keep popping into my head; Amazing and Damn… just damn. How can I honestly put into words how much I loved this story and how sad I am that it’s over? Following a year long wait JR Wards 8th instalment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood finally made its way into my eager little hands. At 512 pages LOVER MINE is huge (with a fantastic cover) and I’m happy to report that it does not disappoint, in fact with John Mathews long awaited story the WARDen positively shines.

Fans are given exactly what we’ve been waiting for with ever evolving storylines, multiple POV’s, surprises, tragedies, plot twists, ass-kicking action,(Xhex much) humour and oh the romance. Completed here with erotic, blush-worthy love scenes and of course the inevitable struggle and heartache. I can tell you that this story brought me to tears more than once and not for the reasons you might expect. All of this awesomeness has been wrapped up with Wards unique style of writing, complete with product placements, rap music, unique street language, multiple f-bombs and a whole new batch of cool Wardisms I can’t wait to start using, you feel me.

The series is brought full circle within this book with loose ends cleverly tied together and resolutions brought to story threads we’ve had growing and brewing since the beginning. Sadly I realized that even with Ward continuing indefinitely JM/Darius will be the last of the original brothers to have his story told and that with this book being red, just like book 1 (Dark Lover) she’s given us book ends of a sort.

With us since the beginning, in this instalment we finally get John Mathew (and Darius‘s) story. Of all the characters John is the one we have the greatest sense of and have invested the most time in, having watched him change from a scrawny, neglected and abused pre-trans into an enormous, and angry male with a ton of fricken baggage. His pairing with the half Sympath Xhex has been in the works for some time now and with her abduction in the end of (Lover Avenged) we have the perfect place to begin their story. (Which I’m not going to give away) I will say however that I was pleased to see reflections of the sweet, sensitive John we remember (only now oozing sex appeal) and witness a softer side of Xhex. As always their path to HEA is not an easy one but its fun and sexy as hell watching them open up to each other and get there.

As a whole the storyline blew my mind. With three very separate and distinct running plotlines, (which at first had me wondering, where the hell is this going?) Ward manages to merge all the puzzle pieces together into WOW, bringing us deliciously full circle. Darker and more serious than past books my only real complaint would be the lack of banter between the Brothers and the Brothers as a whole. The moments that we’re given are excellent and while they’re all represented to a degree (some more than others) I insatiably craved more and truly missed them. Qhuinn and Blay, each now with their own POV manage to somewhat fill the gap who along with Saxton bring a different degree of heartache, sexiness and hot mess to the mix. Lash is also back as the Lessening societies leader and surprisingly awesome here as he takes things to a whole new gooey level of evil.

In the end Ward leaves us smiling with contentment, with new characters emerging and events opening up for future stories that I can’t wait to discover. I just wish it wasn’t so far away because I find that after getting just 3 days with the BDB its already time to leave them again and I’m not quite ready to let them go yet. I am a late comer to this series, and after all the great reviews, I still had reservations. However; my book quest kept leading me back to this series. I know some people didn't think JM's story was a good or powerful because he wasn't a brother and seemed more like a kid. So, I really wanted to like this word parking lot. I wanted to serve it a plate of you-the-bomb. Hitting the rewind button on RL, the beginning of this book had me palming the snooze button. There was a whole lot of wake me when this junk gets good going on. What's doing, JR? What? You know us fans love some action, true? Blasting some Jay-Z rhymes in the background, I sucked it up and read the dang thang. And wouldn't you know, it started to get good on me? I was feeling some this-book-is-kinda...more So, I really wanted to like this word parking lot. I wanted to serve it a plate of you-the-bomb. I was feeling some this-book-is-kinda-growing-on-me-for reals. I think this book released a bonding scent on me, you feel me? I couldn't put it down after the sun ducked for cover.

Maybe because it was psycho Lash, I even paid attention to what's doing with the Lessers. He must have 70% control in crazy stock because I busted out with giggles when he left that message on V's machine. Funniest. Villain. Ever.

What had my eyebrows rubbing my hairline was the change in Xhex. She wasn't that likable before. I won't front, if I knew I could beat her in a fist fight, I would have written it in one of my previous reviews, but her being an assassin and all had me going all Kindergarten with the zipper on my mouth. But trauma will change you and Xhex had her cake and all, and wouldn't you know, I started to like the Sympath. Great, now I feel like a Nancy or something. John was still adorable. He stuck by his woman like white on rice, even when she was going all Atkins Diet on his feelings. They were so romantic in a we're-both-killers kind of way. And ain't that something to write home about.

I missed the Brothers in this one. Whenever one of them felt like putting in an appearance in the books' real estate, I felt myself grinning so hard the sides of my mouth caressed my ears, you feel me? Seriously some Mary Poppins type love going on here.

And wouldn't you know, at first reading about Thor and Darrius was a bore. I won't front, I skimmed those sections like milk. But it started to get interesting so I had to go all Back to the Future Part III on those parts.

Say whatever you want, I wasn't feeling the whole Blay/Qhuinn/Saxton thing. It almost seemed forced. But almost as much as I love extra sharp cheddar cheese, I love Blay, Quinn, and Saxton. And just like you do with someone you love, I tapped the ignore switch on the cheesiness of their storyline. And cheese it was. Extra. Sharp. Cheddar. Yum, yet still cheese. Ya heard?

And wouldn't you know, JR. Used. These. Four. thiiinnnnngggsss a buttloooooooaddd of tiimmmeesss throughout-the-book. Oh and I SO don't want to forget how much she SO used that word. But like a Nancy, I still liked everything and served it with a side of 3.5 stars. Like the good ship Titanic, I was doomed from the second time I picked up one of her books. My second time sealed the deal. And like one of Rhev's old customers I'll buy the next book she puts out. Addiction, much?

It’s kind of hard for me to rate this book. For the pure enjoyment factor, I’d give it a solid four stars. The same grammatical/editorial errors that annoyed me in “Lover Avenged” were present in this book and I tried to make myself ignore them, but I won’t deny that they’re kind of distracting.

At this point, I think I’m going to do a likes/dislikes review. I’ll try to keep things short and sweet and not get all analytical. Maybe.

-Xhex - When she was first introduced, I was indifferent to her character. In “Lover Avenged,” I grew to like her and that only increased as I read this book.
-JM - He kind of annoyed me in the last book, no lie, but I’m glad that he finally gained some perspective in this book and stopped being a jerk to Tohr. One downside to his character is that a part of me still sees him as just a kid. I don't think there was a big enough time gap between when he showed up as the scrawny pretrans kid to now. It's hard for me to think of him as an adult, even though I know he's in his 20s.
-Qhuinn/Blay - I’m a fan of slash, particularly when it’s of the angsty variety. All of that emotional turmoil is just right up my alley. While I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I’m hoping that Ward does follow through on the promise that Qhuinn and Blay will have their own story.
-Payne - She’s a strong female character, but I do wonder why the only heroines that really stand out in this series are the ones who can kick some ass. I loved Bella and Mary, but they essentially just faded into the background aside from putting in the occasional appearance. Doc Jane pops up pretty often, but only because she’s the Brotherhood’s resident doctor and they get injured on a regular basis. Aside from that, the heroines in this series are mainly around for window dressing. I find that rather disappointing. Some people say that in romance novels the heroine doesn’t matter because these books are fantasy fodder for women and that means they should be all about the hero, but I beg to differ (though these books don’t really fall into the romance novel category for me anymore, but that’s neither here nor there). Personally, I don’t want to read about a heroine who has about as much personality as a piece of dry toast. I want the heroine to be as vivid and memorable as the hero. Unfortunately in this series, and many others, the heroes are so much larger than life that they totally eclipse the heroines. Luckily that didn’t happen in this book and hopefully it won’t happen in Payne’s either, but it has definitely happened in some the other books in the BDB.
-The Darius/Tohr flashbacks.

Dislikes
-The whole paranormal investigator subplot. At some point, I had an Aha! Moment and figured out where Ward was going with it, but all in all I thought those scenes were totally random and the one toward the end where the “mystery” was revealed felt so contrived. I don’t want to get into details to avoid spoilers, but…ugh.
-The fact that Ward recycled the whole heroine-kidnapped-by-a-lesser plotline. Yeah, the situation wasn’t exactly like it had happened with Bella, but, still, it’s been done. Like a few books ago. In this very series. I know that Lash wasn’t just your ordinary lesser, but that doesn’t matter much. Bottom line, I think Ward should have come up with something different for this book.

There are other things I’d mention, but for the sake of not heading into spoiler territory, I’ll end this here. I will keep reading the series, but I feel like it should end soon. Payne and Manny are next, and I think Ward is leading up to books for Tohr and Layla. I can guess who she’ll try to pair them with, although I’m still miffed about Wellsie’s death and I wish there was a way for Tohr to just have her back. If she writes a book for Qhuinn and Blay, then I think this series will be over in around four books or so. Personally, I wouldn’t drag it out any longer than that. Some people like it when series go on and on indefinitely, but I’m the sort of person who wants to see how things end. This is true even with my favorite series. There comes a time when things should be wrapped up and closure must be had. Otherwise it seems to me that it just becomes a matter of money and profit and that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But, hopefully, Ward will wrap things up nicely and we’ll finally get to see the whole lesser/vampire war come to a climax. I look forward to it.

I think it could have been condensed, there were times I thought it was dragging out a bit.

I was glad JM and Xhex had so much page space, unlike the last two books where the main couple's romance was cramped into a lot of other things.

5++ Stars - I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!

WOW! I think this book was even more emotional the second time around, and of course I noticed even more things!!

I still love JM and Xhex. They are my favorite couple, and this is my favorite book so far. We've followed their story for so long, and it was just as emotional. The first time I read this book I was in an emotional cloud for a few days.

I am at a bit of a loss as to how to review this one without giving too much away. There is just so much going on, so many threads and backstories and foreshadowings of what is to come, that avoiding spoilers is a bit tricky.
