This book was just ok for me. One problem is I didn't read the previous one in the series so I started from behind. But EB didn't do much to bring me up to speed and some of the details I was not even sure pertained to the other book. We came into the story with James having been in a fight. About what? and over who? I think it was about his daughter, but am not sure. She never gave us the details over anything. It just got referred to through the entire book.

Elinor's husband, he was so terribl...more

Lately I`m in the mood for Historical Romances. When I stumbled across this novel, I had to read it. It sounded cute, witty and promising.
I haven`t read the first six novels in the series, but each are mostly stand alone novels,( from what I`ve read)so I was safe.

As Characters go, I was in love with James character.
I`ve read so many fantastic male characters lately, but he really was one to remember. He`s handsome, smart, kind and has a witty personality.
He was always the more poise, stern b...more

I can't fault the writing - Boyle is a great writer of fluffy, banter-laden Regency comedic romances. But this book drove me to distraction thanks to its reliance on one of my least-favorite romantic comedy tropes of all time. If a plot would cease to happen if one or more characters spoke three words to each other at the beginning of the story, then chances are you should probably find a more substantial plot to hang your story on. The central conceit was stretched past the point of breaking, t...more

Elinor, one of the notorious Stanton widows, needs to marry a duke to gain custody of her sister from her unscrupulous uncle. She enlists the help of a certain "Mr. St.Maur," whom she thinks is a solicitor, when in reality St.Maur is James Tremont, the Duke of Parkerton.
James, who sought to enlighten Elinor to his actual status, decides not to tell in order to get to know her better, and to submit his own name forward as a potential husband.

What comes next is a series of hilarious meetings, co...more

I often judge romance novels by how much I remember about their plots and characters after a few weeks/months pass. And this is one plot that I still find charming and memorable.

Elinor Sterling, the second dowager Lady Standon, needs to get married so she can obtain guardianship of her sister and save her from an arranged marriage her step-father is planning. So she sets her sights on a duke. She makes a list of potential dukes.

Then, she mistakes James Lambert St. Maur Thurston Tremont, the Du...more

The plot was too similar to one of my favourites from Ms. Boyle's, 'Love Letters from a Duke.' It was the same concept, so I wasn't sure why she would do another book like this.

I only randomly picked this up at the library because I was craving a good, cheesy, historical romance. I was surprised that I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I wasn't blown away by it, I didn't finish it and say "Wow! That was great!". But, I can say that the writing was good, and the characters were likeable, unlike most stories of this nature, where you find yourself being annoyed by the things they do and say. Also, the sexual moments in the book were good, since the author did not decid...more

I thought this book was boring which was suprising as I like other stuff that she has done. Didn't even want to finish it.

Another series I am reading out of order. Now I must go find the rest! My favorite part about this book is that the Hero is a 40 year old widower and the heroine a 30 year old widow who needs to marry a Duke. She had a list, and through good old mistaken identity-the 40 year old Duke (who she thinks is a solicitor) is not on the list because she thinks he is too old! He is so offended and says "But that is my age" and she is so surprised. Many adventures later, guess what they realize their love...more

This is the 7th book in the Bachelor Chronicles series by Ms. Boyle. Please be aware that this review might contain spoilers. Sorry. :-)

Before reading this book I had not read any of the previous book's in the series. While this can be read as a stand alone book. It will help the reader to read the previous book in the series to understand what is happening.

While Elinor is trying to get married to save her sister from a disastrous marriage set up by her step-father. She falls in love with who...more

Mistaken identities! A masquerade! Picnics! People spilling tea on one another in an attempt to keep them from spilling the duke's identity! A duke endearingly bad at driving constantly stealing his brother's carriage! This book - it has all kinds of things that I adore.

I loved that Elinor falls for James while she is convinced that he's a solicitor - and therefore can't marry him because she needs a lord to stand up to her sister's guardian. And that he can't simply 'fess up to being a duke be...more

I've gone about reading this series in the wrong direction and I've been trying to find the earlier works so I can get caught up. This book is towards the end of the series but it was no problem for me. I've fallen in love with the women in this series. They are smart, sassy, and independent. I love how the Lady Standons have come together and have made the best out of their situation. This story follows Elinor as she tries to find a duke to marry to help save her sister. Unbenonst to her, she d...more

Great characters. Wonderful, witty banter between them. I couldn't stop reading.

As a caveat, this is not really a stand-alone book and if you have not read the others in the series (as I had not), you might find yourself a bit lost at first. In spite of that, I still loved this story and highly recommend it.

"Perhaps what I love most about Mad About The Duke is that it is simple and simple in an elegant way. It doesn’t have a bunch of detractors to distract you from the tale of two people who met and fell in love. Indeed, this book will remind you of the crazy things people will do when they feel the first flutters of attraction. It is a funny, simple and sweet love story and it deserves a place on the 'for keeps' shelf."

It was extremely funny! Enjoyed reading how the "mad" Duke of Parkerton aka Mr. St. Maur becomes Lady Elinor Standon's solitor to find her a Duke to marry and in the process falls for her himself. The story even though he hides his identity does not end in the same ol' she is angry with him because he decieves her. The story could have had a proluge or a little bit better ending, it ended quite abrubtly but happily. Would enjoy reading again just to enjoy the reaction and changes from stuffy old...more

As other reviewers have mentioned, the conceit was hardly believable, even for a regency romance. The characters were interesting though, particularly Parkerton. It was decent, but not one I would enthusiastically suggest or re-read.

I like Elinor. The Duke seems a bit pompous in the beginning, but he quickly becomes a lovable, caring character. I would have liked to see more of Arabella, his daughter.

I really loved this book. Well written, cute, romantic, but I wish there had been more to the ending. I feel it ended very quickly, and cut off on the end, but over all I loved it.
4 1/2 starts. Only reason it's not a 5 star is because I wanted more details at the end ;)

Another Boyle book that was just okay for me. I liked the premise and the sale price tag on Amazon so I decided to try it. James was my favorite part since I adore stuffy heroes who have a soft spot for the heroine. I do wish we had gotten more about his early marriage since it was obvious that it had a huge effect on his personality. Elinor got on my nerves at various times. I understood her dilemma and her reasons for finding a rich husband, but there was something about her that left me cold....more

I do really enjoy Ms. Boyle's books. I love revisiting the other characters she has written about, as they make brief (and sometimes not so brief) appearances throughout her newer books. It is fun to meet the new characters and they do all seem to retain a sense of themselves without muddling into one giant female heroine. (Some authors' characters of the same sex, all come off feeling like the same person, simply being called by a different name) I always look forward to her books. The story le...more

This is the second book in the Standon Widows Series...connected to The Bachelor Chronicles. It is a fun read. There is no angst or no heavy breathing-just a few smiles and a quiet laugh or two. On top of that a little mystery was added. I did find myself skimming over some of the details in the last few pages. I couldn't wait to see how all would be "happily ever after"!
Mindy
Fun story with rich characters. I love the three widows Standon. James ,Duke Parkerton, is mistaken for a solicitor and entreated to help Elinor, lady Standon, find a husband--a duke--so that she can save her sister from being married off to the highest bidder by her no good step father. Farce and silliness ensue. fun, quick read.

Elizabeth Boyle's latest is a fun, feel-good read. I often have a problem suspending disbelief with mistaken identity romances, but I completely bought into this story of a duke pretending to be a solicitor. I loved the characters and their relationship. The ending was a bit too neat, but it didn't spoil my pleasure in the book.
Rebekah
The concept of mistaken identity is getting a little old however I really did enjoy this book. Elinor and James truly fall in love, she fits it for what she believes is the greater good but they are truly in love (sometimes I wonder about the “noble” couples in these books if they are really truly in love at the end).
