The cover of The Hidden Flame by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke is beautiful.
The story takes place in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is filled with turmoil because of people of the Way, and this does not make the Romans or other religious leaders happy. The Romans don't want a riot at any cost, where other religious leaders think people of the Way (Christian religion) is not an authentic religion.

A great and fitting sequel to The Centurion's Wife. Gripping storyline, quality writing; a story with a soul.
The Hidden Flame picks up the tale in the "Acts of Faith" series with Abigail, the lovely servant girl, struggling to maintain purity in her faith and perspective in her family. She struggles to release her haunting fear for the safety of Jerusalem's fledgling community of Believers to her Lord's care, and to keep in check her brother, Jacob's, wayward desire to beco...more

This is one of my favorite books to review! Love it. The Hidden Flame takes you back in time to the early church. You can feel the heat of the day and the cobblestones under your feet as you walk through the streets of Jerusalem with Abagail. She is a quiet, unassuming, gentle lady who has two suitors vying for her hand in marriage. The history of the early church comes alive. You feel Abagail's joy and pain as she experiences celebration and hardships during the growth of the early church and ...more
Follow up book to The Centurion’s Wife, The Hidden Flame transports readers again back to bible times where Abigail finds herself facing many difficult situations.
Having survived the massacre of her entire family, except for her younger brother Jacob, Abigail finds herself surrounded by turmoil once again as Herod seeks the lives of her close friends Leah and Alban. Pursued by two men that she doesn’t love, Abigail faces the hard choice of marriage as she attempts to ...more
Wow, two great writers team up to write this amazing story! I was caught right at the start with this one. Davis and Janette weave an amazing story that will require old and new readers to be attentive and follow the story. You should recognize it’s roots in the New Testament, it follows the story after Christ’s death but I think it gives some adventure of the possibilities of the time. Don’t forget that it is only fiction! I didn’t realize this was a series until I finished the book, and ...more
Set in Biblical times, immediately following the death of Jesus and the birth of the "church" The Hidden Flame is a book that will stir your heart. Follow the life of young Abigail and her brother Jacob, Judean orphans under the guardianship of Alban, a Roman centurian, follower of Christ. Abigail works hard in the new Christian community, serving the widows and orphans, a community that is growing by leaps and bounds, as Peter, James and Stephen and other Biblical leaders teach and...more
I think I was a bit harsh on this book when I tried to consider a star rating at first. Mostly because the ending bothered me. The author did a beautiful job creating the setting, painting a picture of who these people were... and yet I really felt almost betrayed by her twice. She did such a good job creating sympathy and building up the character of our Roman hero... and I can't even tell you why it upsets me because that would be a spoiler. This was an exceptionally well-written book and I lo...more
Taking place in Jerusalem beginning 33 AD, this story divulges some politics and tensions during the time Jews, a few Greeks and an occasional Roman are beginning to consider or already believe Jesus was the Messiah. Ably aided by a love of a Roamsn Centurian for a Jewish girl, and his rival as well as incorporating the final decision of the girl herself, the story develops in a way that makes one feel as if one lived in the time. The final quarter of the book demonstrates (perhaps truly, but...more
This book was pretty good. Again, the historical perspective was pretty neat, but the plot was only so-so. The story seemed to really drag on, and it seemed like for most of the book not a whole lot was actually happening, and the characters were going about their lives which were only remotely interesting. That said, some parts of the book were really good. They were just too spread about between the less interesting parts for my taste.

The first part of this story was a bit boring and I felt a little detached from the main fictional character, Abigail. The only thing that I really learned about her was that she was an orphan with a younger brother, Jacob. Another thing that I did not like (probably because I'm such a hopeless romantic) was that of the two men vying for Abigail's affection throughout the book neither of them got what they wanted. Despite that however I ended up liking the book. The setting, Jerusalem in AD 33, ...more

The Hidden Flame is the second book in Davis Bunn and Janette Oke's Acts of Faith series. After waiting to find out what would happen to Alban and Leah after the first book, they very quickly leave the story in The Hidden Flame and become secondary characters. This book focuses on Leah's friend Abigail and the men who would vie for her hand in marriage (Alban's friend Linux and Hebrew merchant Ezra).

I awoke this morning eager to pick-up where I left off on the fourth CD of this 6 CD audio book. Bunn and Oke had me hovering in my kitchen thinking of more tasks that I could do just to stay near the audio drama brought to my ears.

This second book in the Acts of Faith series is another winner with me. How to explain all the elements of this I liked...
Sometimes a verse or statement would hit me over the head and I'd think wow that's me or I'd think, yes a thing to remember.
Once again I felt the emotion of this book. The hate, anger, vehemence of certain characters and the patience, calmness, perseverance of others. The conflict within themselves of a few as they struggle with their faith to feel the...more

This glimpse into the days of the early Christian church continues to fascinate me. The characters are quite real, down-to-earth, and the scenes in the book tightly parallel the Biblical account. Favorite characters from The Centurian's Wife return, much to the joy of the other characters and readers alike. We are treated to an eye-witness view of the days of "signs and wonders" as believers share the truths of the Gospel despite growing threats of persecution. Most interestingly, ...more
I usually really like historical fiction. But not when the heroine has no faults whatsoever. Nothing to personally overcome except what life and society do to them. I can't imagine a real person being so perfect, beautiful, giving, and compliant. It strectched my imagination to believe in such a person. The various Roman and Judean components of the story were mixed up and I was confused with who was where, when and why it was important.
This is the second book in the Acts of Faith series. I'm not usually a huge fan of religious fiction, but I read the first one, The Centurion's Wife, for a book club and enjoyed it so much, I wanted to check out the second installment. I think the thing I find so compelling about this series is that it's not just a statement of faith, it focuses a lot on the Judean and Roman cultures during the first century. Plus, it deals with the historical factors as well. It strikes me as being a well resea...more
Set during the time immediately following the resurrection of Jesus, the history of the early church comes alive. The main fictional character, Abigail, alongside Martha and Peter and Steven and other Biblical characters, reveals the struggle of faith in the midst of uncertainty and persecution. In this story I see the persecuted church of today and am stirred to remain faithful no matter what lies ahead.
Loved it! I am really enjoying this historical fiction series that helps the "Acts of the Apostles" come to life. This one helped me imagine what Stephen might have been like. I really liked seeing how different fictional characters responded to the "followers of the way." It helped illustrate how our choices and reactions to the things we face make such a big difference in our lives.
The Hidden Flame was not as good as the first book in the Acts of Faith series. I enjoyed the book, but had a hard time getting through the first third of the story. The action finally picked up but then I was disappointed with the romantic pairing in this story. It was almost too perfect, as the couple seemed to have no flaws. I can't decide if I'll read any additional titles in this series.
This story is a fictional account of what the early church went through right after Pentecost, up until Stephen was martyred. This story was entertaining and the author's did a great job incorporating the historical components into the story line. I wish that some of the characters varied a bit, at times some seemed to have the same personality. Overall good book.
Two men, from different backgrounds, seek to marry the same woman. Neither of them are followers of 'the way,' as Christianity was called in the early days after Christ's death and resurrection, but the woman is. When they are both rejected, it is how they react that forms the majority of this book. One will become a follower, while the other becomes responsible for the death of one of the group's disciples. Their reactions forms the basis of what I learned from this novel; that our emotions can...more
I really love this series of books. The characters are very believable to me, and I love feeling like I can get to know those talked about in the Bible a little better. These books are fiction of course, but they give me a greater appreciation for what those in the Bible went through in order to keep Christianity afloat. They are also a great way to learn the history of Israel around the time of Christ; I would highly recommend these books.
I loved this book! It was a very moving and heart wrenching read. It brought me to tears! It was so good that I didn't want it to end, so I put the book away for about a week before finishing the last few chapters. This is one I could read over and over again. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys christian fiction, romance, historical or biblical fiction.
I thought this book was slow and I guess I was anticipating a more Historical fiction type of book. This book focuses more on the Christian philospophy and the fictional story and less on history. It was okay, but not captivating and I probably won't read more in the series.
This is the second in the series by Janette Oke and Davis Bunn about the time following the crucifixion of Christ and its impact on the Judean and Roman worlds and how they began to intertwine. I would absolutely recommend this book. You will fly through the pages!
After reading The Centurion's Wife (Acts of Faith Series #1,) I was eager to pick up the story with The Hidden Flame. It did not disappoint! This story of the 1st century Christians, set in Jerusalem, does a great job of putting the reader into the turmoil. It left me ready for The Damascus Way (Acts of Faith Series #3!)
Good book. Wasn't as good as the first one, but it was still good. It had a lot of great things in there about repentance and turning to Christ. Some of the history I did not agree with, but for the most part it was good.
