If you liked Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, then you will like this book. If you loved Dewey, you might, or might not, like this book. Dewey was a tear jerker. But folks react differently to tear jerkers. My brother-in-law's wife said she didn't cry in the case of the first book, but did with this one, because in the first [book], "Dewey led a full and happy life, and death is the natural end of that," whereas in the second (book) [this book], "there is genuine tragedy....more

Quite frankly, I was disappointed in this book. I had read it was not a sequel to the original, but I was not expecting therapy for the writers involved. I get that their cats helped them through tough times and were a great comfort to them, but this book read a lot more like catharsis for those writers than about their cats.

It was sometimes confused as to when the POV switched over from Vicki Myron to the narrator of each particular segment, especially since it appears Myron knows several of th...more

I really liked the first book about Dewey, so when I saw this sequel appear on the store shelf I picked it up. Then, as is the case with many of my books, it sat on my shelf waiting for me to get to it. And now I got to it. Overall, as a cat lover I couldn't help but love the stories of how cats came into the lives of people who needed what the animals could provide for them. Time and again I could not help but see the hand of God moving in the lives of each of these people to provide light and...more

I didn't read the first Dewey book although I want to now that I've read this one. This was like an expanded Chicken Soup for Cat Lovers type book. The stories went
into more detail, but they were all heartwarming tales of cats and the people who loved them. The author warned that readers might not agree with the actions of some of the owners and I did get
annoyed with the guy whose cat got into so many scrapes and yet he still did not keep it inside.
In fact, that cat survived so many outrageous...more

I liked this book a lot; it includes many different stories about cats, their loving owners, and Dewey, a library's pet cat who has attracted many tourists to his town and taught incredible and important lessons to his visitors and owners who work at the library.

Dewey was a stray cat who was found in the book return box at a library in the town of Spencer, and once an employee found him, she took him in and he was dubbed the library's pet cat. He took to anyone who walked through...more

This story is a continuation in part of the life of Dewey, the small town library cat. It is also stories of other cats and how they impacted the lives of their people. I won't say owner because we all know that no one ever really owns a cat.

These wonderful stories are heart warming stories sent to the author after they read the story of Dewey, and they then usually shared how Dewey touched their lives, and how their own cats touched their lives. I enjoyed each and every story, but one story wa...more

Just so you know...I cry a lot through books about how an animal can make you feel, their inspiration, and their complete and total unconditional love to us, but it's such a good cry. I just love to be reminded of how incredibly important animals can be in our lives and how they deserve our mutual love, respect, and protection. An animal can't speak for themselves and tell you what's right and what's wrong, or what hurts. We have to do that for them, to help them, and care for them, to stand up...more

Dewey's Nine Lives is nine stories about or inspired by Dewey, the library cat. The stories are told from the viewpoint of Dewey's 'mom', author Vicki Myron. There is a story about how Dewey affected a lady who was a regular at the library and how his legacy lives on without him since he has died. Another story is about a soldier who returns from the Viet Cong a troubled and unhappy soul. A rescue cat helps him open himself up to relationships by being persistent and loving.

Dewey was a cat that lived in the library in Spencer, Iowa and he loved everyone and everyone loved him. He had lived nineteen years when he died and people over over the world heard about him and mourned his lost. He was always there to welcome everyone, big, small, rich or poor, he didn't care. He just had a way with him that drew people to Dewey. There have been other books written about him and so this one will be for sale Oct. 12, 2010 and I am sure that anyone that loves cats will want a...more

Every once in a while I enjoy a good "feel good" story. Dewey's Nine Lives gave me that story and Vicki Myron did a great job of pulling together the lives of some fairly ordinary people and making them interesting, thought-provoking and heart-warming. It always amazes me when I see the bond between people and their animals. I have a cat, and while I love him (and sometimes folks, it's HARD to love him), sometimes he can drive me so batty.

I think my favorite kitty story was about Ninja, the kar...more

After the first book about Dewey, Dewey's mom, Vicki Myron started to hear from all over abuot some other Amazing Cats!

In this book she narrates just nine of the incredible stories she was told and also includes some more details about Dewey that didn't make the first book. Vicki took time to interview everyone involved with these cats to find out just how special these cats were and that like Dewey had a strong perseverance and capacity for love. The stories range from a cat found drowning on C...more

I did not read the first book before reading this one. Indeed I had no idea there even was a first book. Fortunately it did not matter.

For any person who is owned by cats - this is a must read. Sometimes you think you are alone (or crazy) because your life is consumed by your love of your cats. This book highlights the beautiful stories collected by cat companions across the country that were sent to Vicki, the librarian who found Dewey in a book return slot years ago. Dewey who became a world...more

Everyone knows that I am a sucker for cats and kittens, and it doesn't stop with the animals. I love to read stories of people and their love for their fur-babies. I have always been owned by at least one cat, and do not see a change in that status in my near future. To read about the love and adoration that one has for their little furry children always warms my heart and I can almost always find a link between what they are telling and my own personal experience with my cats. So naturally, whe...more

I read this book after the lead-in of Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, which I enjoyed as a cat and library enthusiast. This collection tells the stories of a handful of cats who served important roles in the lives of their guardians and the people in their communities. Since it was more akin to a short story collection than a continuous narrative, I thought it wasn't as successful as the first book. It certainly impressed upon me the valuable role that pets play in the l...more

The first book featuring Dewey, the cat that won millions of readers over was such a huge success that author Vicki Myron was not planning on writing another book but knew she could not just leave readers hanging. This time as most of Dewey’s story was told in the first book, Mrs. Myron decided to show case nine stories from readers and their cats.

The stories were endearing and some sad. It was nice to get to read about other readers’ stories and to get to know their cats. Cats like any other a...more

I probably shouldn't have read this book so close to my own cat's passing, but I enjoyed the first Dewey book and when I received an advanced copy, I couldn't resist. Especially because I didn't realize I'd be getting the book when I filled out the form.

Each story is about the love between cat and owner companion. They tell of the personalities and strengths of cats. In a world as bleak as it is or was, it's nice to read about those who give and receive love from the simple act of sharing their...more

This is a wonderful collection of stories inspired by readers of Vicki Myron's other book and is filled with the healing properties that animals can bring to your life. Several of the stories really touched my heart, especially Spooky which tells the tale of a Vietnam vet who is suffering from undiagnosed PTSD and the redemption he finds with a black cat who truly had nine lives. This cat was literally dropped onto the roof of his car one night by a bird of prey and Bill takes the cat to a nearb...more

Another amazing book filled with stories from people I can relate to: cat lovers. I loved the first Dewey book. His story touched me on a level I never thought possible. I have always had a close relationship with every animal I have ever had and Dewey made me realize I am not alone in feeling that way. I loved reading about other people's special relationships with their cats and how Dewey brought us all together. These were some amazing tales and I loved every minute of them all, but the last...more

Dewey's Nine Lives is a little bit different than Dewey. There are a few stories about Dewey and six stories about other cats that have made an impact on the lives of special people. And imagine my surprise when my friend's Grandpa Mullenberg is mentioned in the first chapter. I got so excited that if it weren't 2 AM in Iowa I would have been texting her or calling her! Instead I Facebooked her. Silly isn't it? To get so excited at something like that. I am a true nerd. LOL

Vicki Myron's "Dewey's Nine Lives: The Legacy of the Small-Town Library Cat who Inspired Millions" is a collection of 9 short stories that were sent to her based upon cats which like Dewey were inspirational in various ways. The 9 stories set across all aspects of American life are mostly well done & show the power that pets have in our daily lives. The problem at times with certain stories, though, is that the author herself interjects too much of herself & the personal lives of these i...more

I LOVED Vicki Myron's first book, Dewey. I wiped away numerous tears the first time around. This second book however did not do it for me. It seems rather haphazard and carelessly written. Most of the cat stories are not endearing but rather portray crazy behaviors exhibited by some cat owners. I felt sorry for a lot of the cats in the book. One subject even admitted to making up parts of her story. Another discrepancy that I noted was that she states on page 4 that Dewey only liked to sit on so...more

This book is a follow-up to Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by the same authors. The original Dewey book generated so much reader feedback (more cat stories) that the authors felt compelled to publish a follow-up. Each chapter features a different cat & human story. Some stories are more fascinating than others. I liked this book, and the original Dewey book, because I can only love cats when they don't have their dander to activate my allergies.

I reserved this book while browsing quickly through the e-book shelves on my library's website. I thought I had reserved the book about Dewey, the library cat. This is another volume comprised of nine stories about cats and the people who loved them. The people wrote to Vicki Myron after the publication of the original Dewey book and Ms. Myron chose to publish some of their stories. I am not a cat lover, so reading about the individual cats didn't appeal to me. However, I think that this is a ca...more

Dewey's Nine Lives by Vicki Myron & Bret Witter is a collection of stories perfect for fans of Dewey or any animal lover. Dewey Readmore Books, the library cat from Spencer, Iowa gained international fame even before his death, but with the release of a book about his life in 2008, the author heard from cat lovers all over the world with stories of how Dewey touched their life or how their cat was special like Dewey. She read through all of these letters and chose a few to contribute to this...more

I was a little disappointed in myself as I started to listen to this audio book..I thought I was purchasing the original "Dewey's Nine Lives" book. Instead this audio book was the story of Dewey's life, AND the life of several other cats and their owners. Not that I didn't enjoy listening to the audio book, because I did...I wish I had read the original "Dewey's Nine Lives" book before listening to this audio book. However, you can still listen to this version of "Dewey" and still get an idea of...more

I had very high expectations for this book and I couldn’t even finish it. I read, loved and cherished Dewey so when I came across this book I was excited to hear more Dewey stories. As I got further into the book the author Vicki Myron attempted to draw more and more parallels to Dewey’s life and her own. If you talk to enough people you will find people who have very similar stories to you. I felt that drawing these parallels in the middle of these other cat stories really took away from Dewey’...more

This is not a sequel to the first book about Dewey, but rather a collection of some of the author's favorite cat stories told to her after Dewey died. It reminded me a little of "Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul." Dewey's book is definitely better, but this one is sweet. My favorite story was Church Cat. :) I guess my only criticism of the book is that she spends way too much time repeating details she already covered in Dewey's book. I also wasn't a fan of the way the woman reading the aud...more

I have mixed feelings on reading this book. An assortment of stories that covered many emotions bound by the common thread of the companionship from a cat being there for their owners when they needed someone.
I haven't been a cat owner for over 20 years but the stories brought tears on several occasions as I thought about my dogs that I have loved like family, and eventually had to see pass on.
Although the writing itself lacked at times, the emotions portrayed were vividly conveyed, and illust...more

See my review for: Dewey by Vicki Myron.

This sequel follows up with Vicki Myron, to share the stories she was told during Dewey's height of fame. It includes both personal stories of her own encounters with animals, and of heart-wrenching stories from other souls.

At some points this story is so sad you might cry, some times you'll want to be right there inside the actual story laughing along with these amazing animals.

Read this story once, then read it again with a different perspective, keep re...more

Dewey's Nine Lives is not a sequel to the original book about the personable orange cat. Instead, it tells more stories about Dewey and the stories of a few of the cats whose owners wrote to Vicki Myron. The book was amazing. I laughed and cried, and often at the same time, which is rare. You could tell how important each cat was to his or her family, even though the author never met these cats. I even felt like I knew the cats after reading about. Dewey's Nine Lives was enjoyable, and it remind...more

I was born in Spencer and grew up on a farm south of Moneta, Iowa—a town that no longer exists. I graduated from Hartley Iowa High School and moved to Mankato, Minnesota where I worked, married, had a daughter and went to college. I have a bachelor’s degree from Mankato State and a master’s from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas. In 1982, I returned to Spencer, Iowa to begin working at the...more
