Roslyn Rutabaga wakes up one morning with a plan. This imaginative little rabbit wants to dig the Biggest Hole on Earth. “I might dig all the way to China,” she tells her father at breakfast. “Or even to the South Pole.” Her father gently supports her plan with encouraging comments such as, “You’d better take a sweater. It gets pretty cold in the South Pole.”

Roslyn finds the perfect place to dig in the middle of the lawn. However, her shovelling is halted by a grouchy worm who...more

Roslyn woke up in the morning knowing just what she was going to do that day. She was going to dig the biggest hole on earth in her backyard. Over her breakfast of carrot flakes, she told her father about her plan and he thought it was a good one. She just had to be back for lunch. Roslyn careful chose the perfect spot for her hole. But when she started digging there, a worm complained that she was digging up his front yard and should dig somewhere else. She moved near the fence but then a grump...more

In this story of a young bunny who is excited about spending her day digging to China or the South Pole, Marie-Louise Gay has a winner. Roslyn is stymied by the various underground animals she unearths as she starts digging in different sections of her garden. The animals' voices are fresh, funny, and make reading the story aloud a truly entertaining experience. My one reservation is about the cognitive leap required at the end of the story. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!) Roslyn, exhausted and defea...more

Roslyn Rutabaga wants to dig the biggest hole on earth, all the way to the South Pole so she can meet a penguin or two. She finds the perfect spot and goes at it, but gets chastized by a worm for digging up it's front yard. So she finds another perfect spot, only to dig into a mole's bedroom. When a dog yells at her for digging up it's cupboard, she decides she'll never dig the biggest hole on earth. I love her dad's interaction with her. Makes me think of Harper sitting in holes on the beach.

-fun book that shows how a little bunny wants to dig the biggest hole on Earth
-she encounters problems, such as a worm and a dog, that keep her and distract her from digging
-but she persists, and keeps going
-i like how the story shows what the bunny is thinking through italics, this way, the students will know those are her thoughts
-also, there are labels on maps and symbols such as Chinese letters to symbolize that she wants to dig a hole to China

Roslyn Rutabaga is a rabbit who wants to visit the South Pole by digging a hole through the earth! Though she is continually told to quit digging by various residents of her yard, including a worm, a groundhog, and a dog, Roslyn perseveres. She has almost lost her desire to dig when her father brings lunch and praises Roslyn's digging. This is a cute story that would work well for an imagination-focused story time for k-3 readers.

A sassy little rabbit who decides she is going to dig the world's biggest hole. Along the way she disturbs worms, dog bones, and moles. She discovers that digging is a lot more challenging than she expected, but her father reassures her she has dug the biggest hole and they end up having lunch in it. An excellent book about exploring the natural world that's all around us---even in our backyards!

Delightful story about a father's support for his young daughter's ambitious task. It's a sweet book with even sweeter illustrations about Roslyn, a young bunny, who tells her father that she's going to dig the biggest hole ever right through to the South Pole so she can meet a penguin. But Roslyn gets discouraged when other animals become upset with her because she's disrupting their routines.

This fun little tale follows Roslyn Rutabaga's mission to dig the biggest hole on earth. Unfortunately, her goal is thwarted when she disrupts the the animals that live underground. She learns that this task may not be easy. Nevertheless she is encouraged by her supportive father. This story is jam packed with humour, a subtle moral and lots of ambition.

Another book whose strength lies in affirming a child's imagination, even when things don't go as planned.

The father never discourages Roslyn the rabbit from trying to dig the biggest hole on earth, all the way to the South Pole. Instead, he goes with it, and even when Roslyn thinks she's failed, her dad is there to imagine her success.

Did I miss the bus on this one? Adorably illustrated rabbit and adorably illustrated penguin on last page were the highlights for this reviewer. We got lost somewhere in between during the tale of an adorable rabbit digging the biggest hole on earth, running into some roadblocks along the way.

Loved the illustrations and the well-thought out story. Everyone wants someone who will listen to their dreams and not laugh but instead let you try it out like Roslyn's dad does. I like how you can even tell apart where Gay used different media. Great drawings and great use of page space.

Roslyn Rutabaga wants to dig a hole all the way to the South Pole so she can meet some penguins. She runs into obstacle after obstacle - who would have guessed that underground could be such a busy place! Great for the 2013 Summer Reading Club theme - Dig Into Reading!

Roslyn Rutabaga is a rabbit that wakes up one morning and decides to dig the world's deepest hole so she can go to South Pole to see a penguin. She runs into obstacles, such as a mole and a worm, so must keep starting over. Cute, but not my favorite picture book!

Really like the story. Not terribly enamoured of the artwork. It has lots of action but the scratchy style and muted colors keep the characters from really popping out onto the pages to match the text.

This is a sweet and serviceable story about a rabbit who wants to dig the biggest whole on earth and the challenges she meets while trying to accomplish this. The illustrations are lovely.

I enjoyed this picture book of a determined, strong girl character. I also liked the fact that the father was taking care of her. Digging is always popular with the young crowd.

I love the idea of this book and the illustrations are delightful, but I felt like it petered out towards the end. I'm not sure even now how Roslyn deals with her disappointment, just that she gets over it.
