I had no idea that Matheson had written any westerns until after his death when a friend recommended A Journal of the Gun Years. This book, along with its companion about Wild Bill Hickok, combined in one volume, are enjoyable but not earth-shattering. They are both meditations on fame and the public's obsession with those who have it. The narrative voices are in stark contrast, Hickok's very amusing and wry.
Bleah. I like this genre but this book (two stories) what a cheese fest.
