Welcome to the spooky side of Calef Brown's imagination, where things are just as scarily silly as they seem! It’s a magic night, a silly, spooky scene. Are you ready for Hallowilloween?

From werewolves and witches to vampires and Grim Reapers, this Halloween book has it all....with a spin. The vumpire only works night games, the mummy is completely unraveling, and two alley cats go to battle. These spooky, but not too spooky, poems are the perfect read-a-loud as the Halloween season comes. Older grade levels would appreciate the humor more, but all kids will love the quirkiness and hilarity of Brown's poems and illustrations.

This book made me laugh out loud, but I wonder if children would get some of the humor. You can see the poems called "Lone Star Witches," "The Oompachupa Loompacabra," and "Mummy Unhappy" on this page, and get an idea of the style.

I liked this one ... but I felt the quality of the poems was really all over the map. Some were really fun and the rhythm "worked" ... whiles others felt more than a little forced to me.

My favorite might have to be the Oompachupa Loompacabra. Or maybe the Lonestar Witches.

This is a book that has poems about Halloween things. Would be great to do with some poetry writing around Halloween time. The pictures are really cool and go along with the poems, nothing too scary. Would be good for grades 1-4.

I'll admit, I like Calef Brown's illustrations and put up with his poetry. His poetry isn't bad, but it probably wouldn't be good either - if it weren't for his excellent, amusing illustrations.
Laura
I loved the vibrant illustrations. The poems, however, were a mixed bag. We have a ton of Halloween books in our elementary collection and this isn't one that I'll be ordering.

Spooky, but not too spooky, humorous Halloween poetry. Mid-grades. Lots of puns. Suitable for read-alouds. Good examples are: "The Poltergeyser" and "The Vumpire." Wonderful, graphically interesting illustrations. Bold.

I thought the poetry in this book was great and would love to have students write similar poetry in a poetry unit during Halloween.

Perfect little poems to get in the spirt of the season. Needed some for a school project and these were great!

More Calef Brown goodness..our favorite poem in this collection is Duncan.

Lots of fun a great Halloween read, I love his play on words.

Clever word-play and fun poems (like "The Oompachupa Loompacabra").

Wonderfully original and funny

This took about 5 minutes to read, if that. It's a slim collection of rather silly and charming 'Halloween theme' poems for kids (or the kids inside adults--like me!) One short and funny sample (entitled "Scarecrow's Epitaph"): "A word of advice/to my replacement,/now standing guard/in the pumpkin patch:/ Never scratch an itch/with a kitchen match." VERY cute. And the illustrations are equally charming. Nearly anything about my favorite holiday is fair game--this was especially fun.
Meredith
Great acrylic illustrations accompanying very mediocre Halloween-related poems.

Starred review at SLJ, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, the poems weren't that clever and I didn't see any that would work really well to read aloud to kids. I think the title poem is the best of the lot. Prefer Adam Rex's Frankenstein books for Halloween poems.
Lindsey
This book is full of poems dealing with Halloween. Most of the poems rhyme and are funny. I think kids would enjoy them. The illustrations are pretty neat. I would probably use this book for a read aloud.

If you're looking for some Halloween silliness then this is definitely the right book.
The poems are short, easy to read and fun. I think kids will especially enjoy the Halloween silliness of this book.

Nothing more underrated than a children's book, except maybe a children's book of poems. "The Oompachupa Loompacabra" is a new favorite but just about all of these will make you smile.
