If I could, I would give this book negative points. The fashion advice is all common sense and mediocre, but what made it the polar opposite of stellar is when I got to the section where it basically says, "screw the animals, fur is in, so wear lots of it!!" I don't care if you eat meat, but *no one* should wear fur. And even if you do, you shouldn't rub it in people's faces. Because I'll stick pictures of how that fur was procured in your face.

This book gives some great advice for coming up with your own style. I love that Nina admonishes carrying the "it" designer handbag which fits in well with my views against carrying/wearing trendy, name brand clothes and accessories.

I do mark this book down though for Nina's unashamed promotion of fur. "PETA be damned, I'm a huge fan of fur," she says. Yes, fine, Nina, PETA be damned. But it's not about PETA, it's about the poor animals who get skinned alive or e...more

The author is from Heidi Klum's, Project Runway. This was a quick read with great illustrations. The suggestions were basic, and the overall theme was that confidence to pull of an outfit, comes from within. One good thing about this book is that it finally gave me the push needed to completely clean out my closet, discarding many pointless items. That felt good!

Very cute book, but the substance of it could've been contained in a medium sized article rather than an entire book.
As with most others, I was introduced to Nina Garcia on Project Runway, and I love her...it was nice to read her about her history with style and fashion. I would've enjoyed reading more of her own story of growing up elite in South America, attending boarding school, working in the fashion trenches of New York, rather than her guidelines. She had one main message: Style is...more

This book has great illustrations and is fun to read, although it only takes about an hour. It had a greater effect on me than I thought, because within a week I threw out half my clothes and vowed to shop often and buy very few things.

My husband and I bought this book for my younger sister, quite the fashionista, for her birthday last year. The illustrations really add to the book, but it's pretty basic stuff. It doesn't mention how to dress for your particular body shape or skin color, which I think is important. Overall, it's a quick, enjoyable read.

I know that being only 23 with a limited income living at home while trying to save money to pay for my wedding makes the idea of wanting to reinvent my style seem a little lofty, considering the cost of clothes these days. However, after reading this book, I now know that it's not about the price or the label of your clothes - it's HOW you wear them. The only thing I didn't really like about the book was the tendency to have very wordy run-on sentences. I get that she was trying to be conversat...more

My Christmas present for my sister - well written (you'd expect that from a known editor) and interesting. She's got a unique vantage point on style that I appreciate. It's a bit more cultured. A quick, fun read. Don't skip the intro.

OK, this isn't the most literary book that I've read. However, it was a weeks worth of bus rides well spent. It encouraged me to finally REALLY clean out my closet. I have passed on or gotten rid of all of the clothes that no longer fit, were never just right, etc... I do feel happier. Now, I am working on the other steps/suggestions in the book.

I can't bear to part with all of my high-heels yet, despite the fact that my foot injury will probably keep me from wearing them ever...more

Great book for influencing me to get started on cleaning out my closet. If I haven't worn it in a year, then why is it still taking real estate in there?!? Very common-sense ideas, but a good reminder read.

An excellent little fashion-style manual. It's not wordy nor very flashy. It is a slim, quick, and helpful style book. The guide on using cult fashion movies (i.e.: Breakfast at Tiffany's; American Gigalo; Belle du Jour) and music stars was very helpful, especially if you're too young (chronologically or fashionista-ly) to know the connections & influences. The movies and rock stars listed were obvious. Like most fashion/style guidebooks, I did find this one to aslo be a bit snobby. Not everyone...more

Yay! I don't have to follow fashion trends and that's okay! It's nice to hear that from a pro, but I still don't think that I need a cashmere sweater. But if anyone's offering....

Another book that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. This has helped me have the confidence to start clearing out my drawers and my closet. If something doesn't make me feel good and look good, if I don't love it, I need to let it go.

It's a whole change in my way of thinking. Admittedly, some things will have to stay until my baby weight is gone, but they don't have to stay in my closet. I'm planning to put some things away in the attic for a while and see what happens when my cl...more

Elle Magazine and Project Runway's Nina Garcia takes the curious reader down the runway of fashion's modern history in this fun and beautifully-illustrated book.

Garcia tackles the very basics of style, careful to guide with inspiration and not to tell exactly what must be done (with a few minor exceptions: trench coats, black red-soled pumps, white shirts and jeans and "a red lip").

Essentially, trust yourself and your own style and GO WITH IT. This survey of ...more

This book wasn't what I was expecting it to be. The so-called fashion advises from the expert are nothing more than common sense.

Simple and super easy to read. I am a fan of "Project Runway" and had already read Tim Gunn's book before this. It was a fun read.

Simple and short, with good basic tips and reminders of how to dress for different occassions. Nothing I haven't heard before, but a good book to have on hand when you are in a fashion rut.
