A book my 5 yr old as well as my twin 3 yr olds loved. A solid reading level 1 book, this cute story keeps all ages engaged with the bright colorful pictures and cute story. A great addition to any children's library.

Mouse's First Summer, was a short and cute reading. I think this book would be best for preschool and Kindergarten. During the story, Mouse, one of the 2 main characters is learning about a few new things that are happening in the season of summer. This would be a good read for Pre-K and Kindergarten because this is during the time that they are still learning about things in the world.

Mouse and Minka take your little one on a magical summertime journey!

They get to taste their first sweet watermelon slice...

watch ants busily bringing back food to their nest...

tumble through the soft green grass....

look up at the bright blue sky...

watch orange kites float up through the sky...

sip their first lemonades...

nibble on their first peanut butter and jelly sandwich...

watch fireflies glow in the sky...

and even watch fireworks up in the sky!

This is what summer days should be like for all

This is the second Mouse book I've read, the other being Mouse's First Spring. That title was wonderful- it flowed well and sounded good out loud. Mouse's First Summer, although a nice book, was not as effective as First Spring. The narrative doesn't have the same repetitive consistency. There also seems to be too many adjectives for the text to flow well when reading aloud, e.g.: "Drippy, sweet, wet, red watermelon." I read it to kindergarteners who enjoyed it, but it didn't receive the enthusi ...more

Recommends it for: parents & caregivers of young children
Simple story for introducing summer fun, has question which the older toddlers had fun answering. 7/11/12

Used again this year and one toddler really enjoyed answering the questions. 6/26/13

Used again. Still looking for young baby beach/summer books. 6/17/14

Used again, maybe should up it to 3.5 since it seems to go over well in Lap Time.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again: personally, I have little use for these books, but they sure are good for my twos story time!
Susan
Great choice for the younger set story hour - hits all the summer basics of picnic, watermelon, fireworks.
Leah
Simple story about summer time activities that invites young children to chime in with nouns and colors.
Joy
Not much plot, even for a picture book; probably better for toddler storytimes than those for older children.
Jaime
My 3 year old love all these mouse board books by this author!
Peacegal
Personally, I wouldn't carry mice in my picnic basket.
Beverly
Very cute; good for story time.
Mary
