Quite interesting. A bit newspaper stylish in my opinion as it felt common events were reported and not so much deeper analysis but still quite interesting perspectives.

zeer typisch Haffner; beknopt en helder, in algemeen gekende feiten legt hij meesterlijk eigen interpretaties, soms sterk afwijkend van consensus, zo ook over oorzaken eerste wereldoorlog; dit was zijn laatste boek, geschreven in 1987, en zijn mening dat de splitsing van Duitsland nog voor zeer lang zou zijn, is op zich een historisch statement
It's really a good book to understand the 80 years of history of prewar Germany. I am still reading this but the context about the WWI has interested me a lot.

Sebastian Haffner (the pseudonym for Raimund Pretzel) was a German journalist and author whose focus was the history of the German Reich (1871-1945). His books dealt with the origins and course of the First World War, the failure of the Weimar Republic and the subsequent rise and fall of Nazi Germany under Hitler.
