I loved this book absolutely to pieces when I was a child and I have also watched and greatly enjoyed the German film version multiple times (the one from the 1950s that had the author, Erich Kästner, write the screen play). It is much more authentic than The Parent Trap (which took some rather huge and for me, unforgivable liberties with the plot). Kästner has definitely managed to realistically portray the many problems faced by children of divorced parents, as well as the irresponsible behavi...more

Thanks to Goodreads friend Gundula (I can’t adequately thank her!) who gave me this copy of the book. So, I finally got a chance to read it. For years, ever since I knew that the movie The Parent Trap was based on this book, I’ve wanted to read it.

My whole life I always wanted a twin sister, or at least siblings. This book would have definitely been a favorite book of mine had I read it at age 9 or 10, about the time I was first enjoying the movie. And, despite being a huge fan of Hayley Mills,...more

I enjoyed this audiobook, although it was shorter than I expected. I don't think it was abridged (Audible described it as "ungekürtz".) It was not the version for the Kinofilm.

When I was a child, there was a fascination with twins. I remember fondly the stories about the Bobbsey Twins The Bobbsey Twins of Lakeport and also the movie The Parent Trap. I never knew that The Parent Trap was based on this story, or at least the idea.

I agree with Gundula http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/7874194...more

Malah karena dia, salah satu...more

This was one of my favourite books as a child, I've read it goodness knows how many times! Been thinking of rereading it in German some time to practice my language skills.

Ini novel pertama yang saya baca.
Kisahnya menarik.

I had never heard of The Parent Trap when I read this book years ago, in grade 5, I think. So I had no preconceived notions going in, and, wow, I loved this book. So much that I made paper dolls of Lisa and Lottie for my cousins and me to play with in the summer! I loved the whole story, and the pen and ink sketches by Victoria de Larrea, and that it was set in the 1940s in Germany. I was into the whole vibe of it! And then I read it so many times that by the time the opportunity came around to...more

Universal is celebrating its 100th anniversary. They have released a selection of their most unforgettable movies. I picked a few I thought sounded good. A couple were based on books. The 1949 novel, "Lisa and Lottie" was inspired by a movie, "Three Smart Girls." "Lisa and Lottie" was the inspiration for the film, "Parent Trap." I have always loved "Parent Trap" and hope I like "Three Smart Girls." It was nominated for a best picture academy award. The movie was released on December 20, 1936.

Seru!

I am sick so I am reading my old kids books. This is the story "the parent trap" was based on. But this is so much better. Get a copy and read it to your kids. Every girl needs to have the book and while you're at it get Erich Kästner's other books. He's truly an amazing kids author.

I actually own the copy pictured above. I got it when I was about 8/9 for Easter with a loaf of Marzipan. I was on the couch reading, crying and eating. Great memories.

There is such an airy gentleness to this book, a far cry from the crude happenings on display in both the Hayley Mills and the Lindsay Lohan versions of the story that were filmed in the U.S. I suppose the book is a little too German and a little too dated to ever attract a publisher for another English translation, and that's too bad. I enjoy all of Erich Kästner's writing and this book was no exception.

I love reading children books. I have this book since I was a child and I read it again recently. Well.. So uplifting, it makes me back to the children world again. Feels like children feel, see the world like children see. The story is about twins who separate since they were baby because their parents get divorce, the twins has contra-characteristic. It is funny, entertaining and have many positive message.. Love it! Love it! Love it!

if I remember right this is what Disney's movie the parent trap was based off of...I do remember the movie is why I hunted up this book in my local library as a kid and read it the first time. the last time as an adult that I tried to get it, my local library didn't have a copy and the book was just plain hard to find. apparently that has since changed.

In the Hebrew translation, in the early sixties, they just couldn't mention Munich. So Lotte's hometown was moved to Zurich. How we loved this book, and all of Erich Kaestner's humane masterpieces for children. How could we know that Munich was the devil's city?

"Das doppelte Lottchen" was definitly one of my favorite books, when I was a child. I cannot tell you how often I re-read it, but I enjoyed it every time.
And I still think, it shows very well what children´s thoughts and problems are like.

I read this book with Mallory. It was one of my favorite books as a child. This is the book that The Parent Trap movie is based on. I forgot the little funny parts of the book and reading it as an adult I got some more stuff that I probably didn't get out of it as a child.

I love the story about the twins! You rock, Erch Kastner! I have read this book when I was on 4th or 6th grade and it became the best book I really love! I've been trying to look for this book.

This is a nice book for students in the third year of German. My students liked the movie as well - when we watched the movie and read the book simultaniously, it helped them to understand.

Re-reading my favourite children's book some thirty years after my first read, but this time in German. Every line, every word seems familiar. I am truly enjoying every single page.

This was the very first book I read after I learnt to read. I remember it took me two weeks :)
And I enjoyed it even when I re-read it a couple of years later.

One of my fave child books. Probably re-read it a thousand times. Still love reading bits of it. For me, it is one of those books which everyone should have read.

A beloved classic! A simple story about two sisters and parents with a big secret. A good story, touching, with many truths for children and adults as well.

I read this for school about nineteen years ago and remember thoroughly enjoying it, but I have to read it again in order to write a proper review.

PROS: If you can get past the coincidence of the setup, it really is quite clever and well plotted. Very heartfelt exploration of children who long to know absent parents. The struggles of the twins to assume one another's identities are believable and often very funny. There's some good twists the film adaptation left out.

CONS: The translated prose is choppy. The father, while kind when we see him, is kind of a prick in the way he brushes everyone off and spends most of his time alone. The reso...more
