This is the fourth in the Alex McKnight series, and a long-overdue return for me. Alex appears more troubled and depressed than usual, not coming out of his cabin for quite some time. His good friend Jackie drags him out for a poker game, from which things spiral out of control, get Alex out of his cabin for good and back into investigating, and calls into question the relationships of the people who make up Alex's world. The writing is clean and sparse (much appreciated in the days of 400+ page...more

Hamilton, Steve
No longer a cop, inactive as a private eye, classic loner Alex McKnight has retreated to his lakeside cabin. In fact, Alex has become so much a recluse in the little town of Paradise in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that his few friends are worried about him. That leads Jackie Connery, the Scottish-raised proprietor of the bar where Alex sometimes hangs out, to badger him into joining a friendly power game at the home of Win Vargas. Before Alex can even work up a g...more

Another satisfying outing in the upper Peninsula with Alex McKnight. This time summer is in full swing. One thing I love about this series is the setting and atmosphere. Alex is a former farm league ball player who spent 8 years as a Detroit cop. He now spends his time managing a few vacation cabins and enjoying the solitude and isolation of the UP. Of course trouble seems to find McKnight and smack him around. This time he is playing poker with some friends when a home invasion robbery puts him...more
This story is about McKnights friends and I don't really like any of them. I don't know why but they are a strange very uninteresting lot.
Well that isn't entirely true: I do like Leon Prudell a nice nerdy guy who wants to be a detective and have McKnight as his partner.
Of all of his friends it seems that Leon is the outcast of the bunch as far a McKnight goes.

Other readers may like it more. This competently written book has a good beginning, but it steadily goes downward from there; the plot gets contrived and bizarre. The climactic scene on Lake Superior is hilarious in an unintended way. The misadventures of a group of elderly men remind me the idiotic "Camel Club" by Baldacci. No more Alex McKnight for me.
"North of Nowhere finds ex-Detroit cop Alex McKnight celebrating his 49th birthday by retreating to his cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where he laments his personal and career failures. Eventually, though, McKnight is coaxed out with the prospect of a poker game, hosted by wealthy contractor Winston Vargas, only to have the game interrupted by armed men in masks, who empty Vargas's safe and leave clues suggesting that Alex and his fellow players engineered the heist.

I am filling in the blanks on this series since I started reading the more current ones first. I really enjoy reading about Paradise and Sault Ste. Marie, MI. I live in the UP so these places are familiar to me. The author should check some of his facts a little better since he seems to think Michigan Tech is in Marquette.
It's so much fun to read about places in Michigan. Taking place mostly in the UP, ex-Detroit policeman has retired after being shot by a criminal who kills his partner. He moves to his family's summer cottage for some quiet time.
The stories are getting better and more complex, though the dialogue is still stilted in places. Oh well, still fun.

I have read all of the Alex McKnight novels and watch Steve Hamilton's web site looking for word of the next one.

I love this guy. If only I didn't have to teach, I could finish the series in a few days!
You can read my thoughts here. (3.5/5)
