I’ve read the first two in M.L.N. Hanover’s Black Sun’s Daughter series, and couldn’t say “no” when the opportunity came up to check out the next two…
drey’s thoughts:
I know I wasn’t too enthused about the first book in this series – Unclean Spirits left a lot of things hanging, and I’m just not a fan of that… But I did pick up Darker Angels and that wasn’t too bad, so I thought I’d give the next two books a whirl. And Vicious Grace did not disappoint.

Vicious Grace by M.L.N. Hanover.
This is book three of the series The Black Sun’s Daughter. This is urban fantasy at its best. Jayne Heller discovers that her favorite uncle may not be the man she thought he was.
I read the fourth book, Killing Rites, in the series first. I am now caught up as I have read Unclean Spirits and Darker Angels . I am enjoying the series and hope to read the fifth book when it comes out.

Horrifying.
It must be horrifying to see what you have become. To think it may not be a good thing that you think is fighting the good fight; that it may be a lie.
Jayné is a very introspective young woman. It struck me while reading the book that Jayné comes from a punishingly religious family. She escaped but now without the introspective ability needed to examine what her thoughts and beliefs are. She peels her emotional scabs off. This leads us to a woman who was, at the beginni More...

I suppose the best way to describe this book is to say that it is about the loss of Jayné's innocence. With Y.A. you get young protagonists and if the author is good, over a series of books you get to see the protagonist mature to someone who is less angst ridden and sure of themselves. When we first met Jayné she was a college drop out who discovered that her uncle had left her as the sole heir to his fortune. Jayné spent the last year with her associates traveling the globe trying to unrav

WOW this series keeps getting better and better! This part is basically about a haunted hospital and a buried demon and the first thing that popped in my mind was that movie by Stephen King called Kingdom Hospital! That was a freaky show and I loved it so obviously this book had my attention!

"So like haunted house?" I asked, thinking of Declan Souder's architectural dissections. Ex shook his head.

I stopped looking through the files. I could feel my eyes getting wide and I fought a sense of growing vertigo.

Summary
After the unexpected death of her Uncle Eric, Jayne Heller found out she had inherited all of his vast estate and all of his paranormal legacy. This legacy included his work helping people affected by 'Riders'. Riders is the generic term for things that possess people, some examples are vampires, lycans, spirits, voodoo gods, and types of demons.

Vicious Grace by M.L.N. Hanover
Urban Fantasy- Nov. 30th, 2010
4 stars
Vicious Grace is the 3rd in the Black Sun's Daughter series. This a dark and gritty urban fantasy for the reader who enjoys a little horror and are tired of the same old vampire/shifter books.
This book is suspenseful and features a cast of eclectic characters. The heroine Jayne inherited gobs of money when her mysterious uncle died, but she also inherited a deadly job and powers she is finally More...

Like a punch to the gut, you are taken by surprise, feet kicked out from under you, gasping for air, and mind reeling. After some revelations about the mysterious Eric are discovered more than one of our characters will feel this way.
JaynÉ, Aubrey, Chogyi Jake and Ex are called in as reinforcements by Kim. There is something big going on where she works, something that is going to change the course of all their lives. Even if there wasn’t this big unknown just More...

I picked up the first book, "Unclean Spirits" on a whim - mostly from a review that noted, "as paranormal romances go, it's pretty light on the romance". Sitting down to read, the book and the series up to this point has been fairly mellow on the "fashion show" angst of most "paranormal romance masquerading as urban fantasy" books. What it is, however, is a great series (thus far) of urban fantasy with a female protagonist that keeps a pretty even balanc

Vicious Grace is the third book in the Black Sun's Daughter series by M.L.N. Hanover and the best one so far! I really liked this book. It was the same easy flow writing style, same story structure with sprinkled bits of drama that I love about this series and to make it all come together perfectly, Hanover really found Jayné's voice in this book. There was loads of action and fact paced scenes happening the whole book through. Even the mundane scenes the characters found themselves in were cut

Jayne has matured in this novel. The reader will love the author's slow development of the characters. Jayne is dealing with two main plots at the moment. She is jealous of Aubrey's ex-wife, Kim, and still friendly with her and she has to deal with whatever is trying to escape from underneath a hospital. Whatever was entrapped underneath the hospital was placed there due to a strange and unnatural ritual. Jayne is constantly dodging danger and life-threatening evils. There is no end to act

I like Jayné Heller as a heroine. I think she's spunky and interesting with enough of a negative side to her thoughts and actions as to make her seem real.
This third book was just as interesting as the previous two. The choice of setting was much more claustrophobic, especially when the hospital started to alter itself. I could just imagine this being the perfect setting for a horror movie and I'll never view hospitals, or Animal Planet, in the same way again.

Sometimes over the course of a series, you think you've got things figured out. When I started this book, I knew who I thought Jayné was and was not supposed to be with; I thought I knew there was more to that tattoo than a drunken night of debauchery; and I thought I knew what it meant for Jayné to be the Black Sun's Daughter. But still, I wasn't prepared for how it all went down.
As the story begins, Jayné is happy in love with Aubrey. The two of them are training with Ex and Chogyi More...

I don't know. I didn't like this one as well, though it is well written. I didn't like the heroine's decisions. I didn't understand them. The team is finding out that there actions in getting rid of the, oh, whatever the name of that college group was, is leaving behind some messes. Grace hospital is one of them. Some new revelations in this book, and some shadowing as to the series title. I don't doubt this author's talent, but the anti-christian attitude is very off putting for me. The heroine

Have you ever been in one of those cobbled-together buildings where the 1st floor of the original structure opens onto the 3rd floor of the new wing, and you can only access the fourth floor by a staircase at the far end of that older building that got swallowed up into the whole mass at some point, and so on? I work in one, and after reading Vicious Grace, I don’t think I’ll ever see it the same way again! (Gee, thanks, M.L.N. Hanover, for making me scared of my own office build More...

Jayne and her team return to Denver to help Aubrey's ex, Kim, with problems at her hospital, Grace memorial. A Rider is buried and bound within the hospital grounds and is growing stronger. Another interesting plot that has a lot of action. In this book, some interesting things come out about Jayne's uncle that change the relationship between Jayne and the members of her team. I thought it was very interesting to learn about Eric's actions in the past and how they affect the team. Still don

I liked this one...a lot!
I got into the story way more than the previous books bc I could relate more with the characters. Jayné has accepted her new destiny and is happy for the first time in her life. She has a loyal bunch of friends, a sweet and loving boyfriend and money beyond her wildest dreams.
Everything is ok until she gets a call about weird stuff happening at Grace Hospital in Chicago...and adding a perk of awkwardness the call came from Kim her boyfriend´s ex More...

In this book things get out of hand for our little self-made family. One member even comes back into the fold. And although Janyé is growing, she still hasn't found out exactly who she is. However, one of the gods in her world falls and she doesn't know if she will ever be the same. She has to now find out who the person she really looked up to was in truth and also fight an impossible threat. Not just one demon, but a legion. This book was much more wrenching emotionally for our little group as

I think this was my favorite of the three books. I liked the revelation about Eric and Kim. But I still think there is something off about the pacing off the series. I feel like I figure things out before the characters do most of the time and I'm like "Come *on*, people; let's get this show on the road." Like the last line of the book, is that supposed to be a cliffhanger? Because the series title confirms the Jayne's suspicion. So now I feel like I already know what the next book is.

In Vicious Grace we once again follow Jayné and her crew as they battle evil. This time however, there are a lot more complications. As if Jayné's life couldn't get anymore complicated, right? M.L.N. Hanover throws the reader a ton of new information to digest in this installment. Love triangles, hidden secrets, possessed hospitals anyone? It's all here to be discovered. I opened the book and dove right in to the newest fight.

I won this book in a first-reads giveaway. I enjoyed the story, but not as much as I expected. Compared to other urban fantasy stories, I felt that this one fell a bit short as far as keeping my attention and interest throughout.
The story in Vicious Grace definitely has potential to be gripping, but doesn't quite pull it off in my opinion. Maybe I just need to read the other books in the series, but this one left me feeling like I just didn't quite get it. All the way along I felt More...

I won this book on Goodreads and was not sure what to expect based on the cover. I somewhat expected the story to be a little racier. It was a little different than what I am used to reading, but I actually was entertained during the whole story. I kind of wished that I would have read the two books that actually came before this one in the series. I'm not usually one to read about "spiritual/ghostly" happenings, but was satisfied with the storyline and characters. I would recommend th

Finally, Finally, FINALLY!!! This book did not have the same start up scenario as the first two. Yes, Jayne got into a brawl, but it was a completely different situation in that she did not need anybody to come help her. Instead, she actually helped someone else. Jayne is finally becoming a more confident character who is now starting to show her darker side. Don't judge; we all have a darker side that we show now and then.

Hanover has created an entirely different mythos for the vamps, werewolves, demons and other beasties found in his world.

The setting is Chicago this time and a dream/visual residue study uncovers something strange going on at Chicago's Grace Memorial Hospital. There are some freaky hive-like men More...
