Set in the sweltering summer of 1938 in Portugal, a country under the Fascist shadow of Spain, PEREIRA MAINTAINS tells a tale of reluctant heroism. Dr. Peirera, an editor at a second-rate Lisbon newspaper, wants nothing to do with European politics. He's happy to translate 19th-century French stories. His closest confidante is a photograph of his late wife. All this change...more

I am 46 years old. Happily married for 17 years. I and my beautiful wife have been blessed with a daughter who is now 16 years old. Three years ago, I bought 501 Must Read Books and thought of reading the books included in it. My brother came across 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die and suggested that we read all those books as well. I agreed. In the course of my research about one of the books we read, I came across Goodreads. Then in it, I saw The Filipino Group. I felt happy that Filipi...more

My son read this for school. He devoured it, finishing it in two days. My husband is next in line and then I will be able to read it.

There is also a film with the great Daniel Auteuil and the even greater Marcello Mastroianni.

Pereira is a middle aged widower who is in-charge of the cultural page of an evening newspaper, Lisboa. He hires an assistant, Monterio Rossi, for writing obituaries of famous writers who are still alive. So that he has 'ready obituaries' to publish if any of these writers happened to die. Pereira's life consists of a fat body, a portrait of his dead wife and a caretaker(who he believes to be a spy). Pereira predominantly lives in the memories of his past life. He is little interested in the pol...more

This is a classic Italian novel that one has to read! "Sostiene Pereira" is a wonderful psychological character study set in a time of political uncertainty--Fascist Portugal in the summer of 1938, with the Spanish Civil War raging next door. Dr Pereira is the middle-aged, overweight editor of the culture page of a Lisbon evening paper; widowed and childless, he talks to a photo of his wife and dines on omelettes aux fines herbes. He has not been following political events and his translations o...more

Antonio Tabucchi is one of Italy's most acclaimed contemporary writers and this novel is translated from the Italian by Patrick Creagh. Its a short novel, set in 1930's Portugal and is the story of Dr Pereira's realisation that he must make a stand against the ever increasing Fascism of the Portugese Government of the time. I loved the 'tight' yet atmospheric writing, the swift pace of the narrative and the use of the third person testimonial to imply that what one read was some form of formal '...more

Tabucchi declares that Pereira is a middle-age journalist working as the editor of the "culture" section of a Portuguese newspaper in 1938. As such, he mostly just translates 19th century French literature and runs it as serials along with the occasional obituary of some writer who's died. Tabucchi doesn't declare this in so many words, but it's obvious that Pereira is not really in touch with anything that might be happening right now - he's too busy drinking lemonade in the shade from the hot...more

"A Fantastic read," Dhanaraj declares.
This book offered many emotional excitements for this reader about which he has no intention of divulging a bit for it has nothing to do with the present issue, the review, Dhanaraj declares.

That is the effect of the literary technique used in the novel. But then to speak of the novel I would say it offers a multiple reading. In fact, I came to know of it from Julian Barnes' LEVELS OF LIFE and Julian had said of it as a novel dealing with grief. And that is...more

Un uomo normal...more

It's astonishing that Tabucchi has managed to write a novel of epic proportion in less than 200 pages. My kind of writer!
The pace moves very gently at first - rather as the novel's overweight hero steadily ambles between his flat, his office and the cafe - however the final chapters are incredibly dramatic and moving. I was moved to tears.
The voice of the text is reminiscent of an official statement, with the continual use of 'Pereira maintains' throughout, which builds the suspense as the read...more

E questo amico n...more

Another Tabucchi novel set in Lisbon. It is 1938: the Spanish Civil War is in full force, Hitler is marching across Europe, and Salazaar is growing more and more tyrannical in Portugal. The time to choose sides has come. Periera, the culture editor of a small Lisbon newspaper, does just that. But perhaps putting it so actively and dramatically is not quite right. Periera does not so much choose sides as find himself pushed to one side by a series of circumstances, some of them quite beyond his c...more

A vederlo...more

Antonio Tabucchi is an Italian writer and academic who teaches Portuguese language and literature at the University of Siena, Italy.

Deeply in love with Portugal, he is an expert, critic and translator of the works of the writer Fernando Pessoa from whom he drew the conceptions of saudade, of fiction and of the heteronomouses. Tabucchi was first introduced to Pessoa's works in the 1960s when attend...more
