I love Brandon Mull's imagination. He creates some fun fantasy. But I do have a problem with him getting kids into problems that they shouldn't be in in the first place, like taking candy from strangers, taking rides with strangers (in the middle of the night no less), and stealing because the stranger told them to (which happens in more than one of his books). He also has pacing problems, and his plots tend to get a little slow. I guess what I'm about to say next could be considered a spoiler, ...more

Several reviewers mention that they enjoyed the second book in the Fablehaven series, Rise of the Evening Star, much more than the first book. I have to agree. There is something more to the sequel. Perhaps it is the fact that both children are almost a year older. There is possibly a little more maturity in Kendra’s brother, Seth, although there are times he still causes trouble. Or perhaps it is the introduction of several new characters, a potion master, a collector of ma...more

Kendra and Seth return to Fablehaven to discover more of what they don't know (and that can kill them) and save the day. Seth, now a year older, is a little wiser and doesn't find himself in as much trouble, but again, it is Kendra who comes through.
By the way, in both books, while Kendra is the reluctant heroine, she is helped by others, so this isn't some supergirl of unlimited capabilities or powers.

I liked the sequel to Fablehaven even better than Fablehaven itself. The author was able to flesh out the characters and each gained a lot of depth.
I read Fablehaven last night, and the sequel, Rise of the Evening Star, tonight, so they're quick reads at 3-4 hours each. (Thank you writer's strike and sick, clingy kids who INSIST on me holding them and not minding me reading at the same time!!!)

I think this book was better then the first. I am still not drawn to the main characters. I wish Kendra would take some more initiative and try to find out what her talents and powers are from being made fairy kind. There is so much build up to that and it is left hanging again in this book like it was in the first. I wish Seth would set a better example in the book, he is constantly disobeying, I was not thrilled with the things the children did in this book, i.e. sneaking out of their par...more

Fun book. A lot of people are comparing it to Harry Potter books. I don't think it is quite on that level yet - Rowling is just a better writer - but I don't think it has too far to go, either.
One thing about Mull's writing that I dislike is that he frequently tells you what is going on, instead of showing you. I don't have the book with me to grab a specific example of what I mean, but it was most noticeable for me in the first 75 pages or so. This style of writing makes me feel mor...more

I liked this better than the first book, because the character introduction and revealing-of-the-mystery-of-Fablehaven bits were already taken care of, so the characters could stretch out a bit.
Seth is getting less annoying, which is good. I wish Kendra was used more, or tapped into some of the strengths she has apparently been gifted. Don't want to say anything that could be a spoiler...

Finally! I got to read this one! I liked it a little better than the first one in the series. While I could see a few things coming, there were still interesting plot twists and challenges. Also, look for subtle little hints about possible plot lines for the third book...I have ideas about what will happen.

I simply can't take this series anymore. I am sure a kid might like it but I can't get into the characters and I can't stand the looooong question and answer sessions either from character to character or within the character's mind. Example:
"What does this thing do?"
"It kills puppies."
"Why?"
"Well it uses fairy dust."
"But why would fairy dust want to kill puppies?"
"Because it's cursed."
(and this goes on and on until my b...more

Better than the first. In this installment, Fablehaven is in trouble again. The artifact that is somewhere in the preserve is in danger of being taken. Grandma and Grandpa have asked to have Kendra and Seth stay with them for the summer. Before they go Seth gets in a bit of trouble with a gluttonous demon.
When they get to Fablehaven they find that there are a few extra people staying. Coulter, a magical items expert, Tanu, a potions expert, and Vanessa, a magical creature expert. They all tuto...more

I loved the first book. The middle of this one left me feeling disappointed. I don't know if it was the difference in my life at the time of reading them both (I was a little frustrated being laid up with a twisted ankle this time) or what. By the time I neared the end, I was back on track and loving it again. I love the story, the characters, the plot, etc. The questions at the end of the book for discussion helped me to see some things the author may have been trying to point out, but I p...more

Despite my general dislike for the first book of this series, I ran into this second book at my library and went ahead and checked it out. I have to say that I liked this one much better than the first. One thing I can say for the books is that the reader's guides at the end really do cover most of what I am uncomfortable with in the books. Also, I recently heard a talk about Joseph Campbell's hero cycle, and these books definitely have the right character structure to fit. I find I am incre...more

Kendra and seth are back at fablehaven and there are some strange things going on. Grandpa was injured and there are three new faces. This one is just as fast paced as the last one, one complaint the illustrations are bad and poorly chosen... Vanessa a beautiful creature seeker, tanu an impressive potions maker and then coulter dixon a collector of magical artifacts are all at Fablehaven to help find a very dangerous artifact before it gets into the wrong hands, or at least two out of three are....more

I enjoyed this book more readily than I had the first book; perhaps because the protagonists were a little more mature. It was easy to become engrossed in the story of Kendra and her brother as they labored to save Fablehaven, themselves and their friends, and the world. It was fun to see seemingly ordinary kids act extraordinarily courageous and responsible when faced with frightening things. I like also that the book (as well as the first in the series) included discussion questions in the bac...more

By the end of this book I enjoyed it even better than the first. Our two young heroes encounter more evil from the human world which adds a different dynamic. They now have more to deal with then the trouble they get themselves into. The mythology broadens quite a bit as well. Also, I enjoy the familial interaction that gets lost in many young adult fantasies. The Sorenson Grandparents are so important and grandparents Rock. To summarize, think Spiderwick Chronicles meets the Percy Jackson s...more

AFTER FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE FIRST BOOK I HAD TO READ THE SECOND ONE, AND AS USUAL IT WAS BETTER THAN THE FIRST. I FIND THIS TRUE WITH MANY OF THE SERIES I AM DEVOURING AT THE MOMENT. THIS AUTHOR COMES UP WITH SO MANY SURPRISES, AND I FIND MYSELF GUESSING AT THE OUTCOME OF EACH CHAPTER. HE WRITES WITH SUCH A DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THESE MYSTICAL CREATURES, AS IF THEY DO EXIST AND HE HAS BEEN PRIVY TO THE MILK HIS ENTIRE LIFE. I ANXIOUSLY AWAIT THE NEXT BOOK IN THIS SERIES, AND AM READING THIS S...more

GREAT writing. If you liked Harry Potter, you'll LOVE this one. The writing is tighter, the characters not as....angst-filled, a little more real, I think.
The world is so beautiful and yet real-feeling. There is a great sense of morality without the SLAP of it in your face. NO force feeding here, just a delightful romp, jog and then a mad-dash to the climax in a world of majesty and power that is both magical and compelling.

I was hooked from the first chapter and gripped until the last page where there is a big cliff hanger! I enjoyed this book just as much as the first one, if not more. The characters of Kendra and Seth have matured and grown up a little with gives added dimension to the story, and some new characters are introduced, some friendly some not. I still love the underlying theme of choices and consequences. It's fun to see how Kendra learns more about her fairy powers.

The second book in Brandon Mull's amazing series. A joy to read.
Kendra's powers are starting to get her into trouble. Seth gets a giant frog really mad at him. The satyrs want even more batteries for their forbidden TV. Excentric new characters and a very strange cocoon.
A great continuation of a fabulous series. Brandon Mull knows what he is doing and how to put you really in the story. I HIGHLy recommend this book and this series, but please, read them in order. Otherwise you will get...more
