Reading Here and Now, one is reminded why T. S. Eliot encouraged Denise Levertov to pursue poetry. Although she was only 12 years old when she sent her early poems to Eliot, he recognize her potential and responded accordingly. In Here and Now, one can't help but recognize the same potential that Eliot recognized in Levertov's early poems. Denise Levertov was born in Ilford, Essex, England. Her mother, Beatrice Spooner-Jones Levertoff, was Welsh. Her father, Paul Levertoff, immigrated to England from Germany, was a Russian Hassidic Jew who, after converting to Christianity, became an Anglican parson.
