I want in on the hating of this piece of shit early. I'm staking out a claim to ground floor disdain at this book, the movie that is forthcoming that the book is based on and the at least two other books that also came out today relating to this vehicle. Barnes and Noble's across the country will be putting up displays soon for this piece of shit, probably orchestrated by the religion buyer who is an evangelical stooge hired away from Wal-Mart.
Fuck this shit.

Letters to God by Patrick Doughtie and John Perry is a very touching and inspirational story. Throughout the story the Daugherty family goes through it all. They were the perfect family mom, dad, and 2 kids. Everything was going great until one day the father Patrick Daugherty gets into a deadly car accident and leaves the family. Maddy Dougherty the wife is now forced to get a job so she can support her two kids Tyler who is nine and Ben who i...more

When I finished reading this book, I wasn't sure how to rate it. I finally decided on four stars based on the following reasons. On the negative side, I wasn't thrilled with the author's writing style. His style was very simple, perhaps at maybe an 8th or 9th grade reading level. He also seemed to be trying too hard to describe everything. I love details and descriptions as much as the next person, but he just went overboard with it. For example, when Ty and Sam are going through the closet to g...more
"A genuine story full of inspiration and hope sure to stir you back to your own innocence and trust in a faithful God."
A simple story, told in a simple script that will capture your heart. Many believe that great books should be written with grand and glorious style. While I do agree that I am often astonished by such writing, I am equally astonished at the premise and simple delivery of what God can do in a life and told in the most elemental of ways.

I've heard good things about the movie, so wanted to read the book first. I can completely imagine this as a movie - it's plot-driven rather than character-driven. Events happen too quickly (e.g., the heroine's single mother slog through nursing school is summarized as "four years went by"). It does a lot of telling rather than showing - a character arches an eyebrow, for example, and we're told that it's "in disbelief" rather than being left to infer it for ourselves. Was it a screenplay first?...more

A beautifully written book. It reminds us on putting our faith and believing in Him through all our good and bad times. Everything happen for a reason and as a mere man, we are unable to understand what His plan is for us. We tend to grumble and blame God for all our misfortunes, thinking that He has forsaken us but we are unable to look beyond the adversity and focus on what lies at the end of the rainbow. This book also answer our questions on why bad things happen to good people. We are the c...more
This book gave me a lot of hope; it made me feel that I could continue my life, no matter what obstacles get in my life. This book was about a young boy named Tyler who gets cancer and starts to write letters to God. His mom finds out about the letters, and soon, the whole community does too. His friends and neighbors help to comfort him, but he only finds comfort in writing to God. At the same time, his mom is dealing with relationship problems, his brother is dealing with his teenager problems...more

This was an amazing book. It was so heartwarming and had a great message. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
I really enjoyed this story. I actually think it's based on a real story, however, this version seemed to be classified as fictional from what I could tell. There is also a kids book version of Letters to God. It's absolutely precious; it even includes a piece of stationary for kids to write their own letter to God. (My kids did this when our cat had been missing for a week and lo and behold...the cat turned up after they wrote their letter to God asking to help her come home.

I needed tissues in hand when reading this book. I had read the book before the film came out and I wasn't expecting it to move me to tears, however it did. It is a wonderful story of a little boy with brain cancer and his family's journey of strength, trial, love, and faith. It is the true story of a little boy, although the character names are not real. This book challenged me to see that God listens and it doesn't matter what circumstance you face, God is always there to listen. I began writi...more
I picked this book b/c I love true life stories and anything faith or inspiring. When Maddie's husband was killed b/c of a drunk driver and then her young son Ty was diagnosed with a serious, aggressive form of brain tumor, her mother was always there for her, assuring her of God's enduring, unshakable love, His plan and purpose for us no matter what our situation. Even at 7, Ty put up a brave front, during his illness, like his Daddy before his dad was killed, he began writing letters to God, a...more
This story is touching, a tear jerker. While the writing style is simplistic, the message of this story is why I rated the book 4 stars. Despite tragedy after tragedy, God works in the lives of all the characters. Not everything in life has a happy ending, but that does not mean God has abandoned someone. The letters that both the dad and Tyler wrote to God show a relationship void of pretense and full of dependence on the Creator. It is a constant reminder to share ALL with Him, to make life a...more
I absolutly loved this book. First hearing about it at church, I was so excited to pick it up. This story is based on the true story of a little boy who has a brain tumor. It definitly pulls at your heart strings, I shed a few tears.... ok ok... I cried like a baby. It was so encouraging though. This little boy truly shows us how to trust God through life's most difficult circumstances. He is dying of cancer, but yet, prayers to god in the form of letters... and this book has something to teach...more

Inspirational tearjerker! Felt too close to home as I was dealing with my step father going through cancer while I was reading this book. To see TY stay so positive through everything he had to go through at such a young age was amazing. The faith in God that was shown in this novel really touched me. I loved the realism this book brought to the table.

I love this children's book. It teaches about prayer and listening to your parents. The illustrations are great, the story is great, my children love it and I love the message. Can't go wrong. After reading it in a book store, it is the only children's book I have purchased for full price. I would do it again too, well worth it.
The book 'Letters to God' is a book I recommend to anyone. It is very inspirational. In the book, there is a little boy named Tyler. His dad dies in a car crash. His dad always wrote letters to God as his prayer. One day, after his dad died, Tyler started reading the letters. He didn't really know his dad because he was young when he died. Tyler started getting headaches. His mom took him to the doctor and he was diagnosed with brain cancer. God plays a big role in Tyler's life now. Does Tyler l...more
The story was good, however, it was a little on the preachy side. I understand that the idea behind it was to have faith and trust God during rough times, but sometimes it was to the point where it took away from the story. Subtlety is beautiful and powerful--this would have helped me like this book even more.
It was better then the movie, the movie is only half of the book. It is a wonderful message, that God is always with us, and He can help us through the hard things. We can pray, or write letters, I do both. And it does help, it take a lot of hardness off of my heart.
I lost one of my very good friends to cancer almost 2 years ago, and it was extremely difficult to go through. Especially because I didn't see that friend. And I relied a lot on God during that. This book wasn't perfect, it seemed t...more
