I would have guessed that a heroine with the magical ability to sense lies would have a fast track through the trust building process, but ENTICE ME AT TWILIGHT proved me wrong.

On the day of her wedding, Felica's truth-sense helps her quickly accept that her life is in danger and that her future brother-in-law is not quite human, but no magic will make her believe that love can last forever. Throughout ENTICE ME AT TWILIGHT there are hints that events in Felicia's past make her frightened of falling in love and opening up to another person. These hints were never sufficient for me to feel invested in her motivations, and I often lost patience with her behavior.

Luckily, this frustrating heroine had a stellar supporting cast, and a pretty great hero. I loved that when Felicia's magical power is revealed to the Doomsday Brethren, the cohort of wizards fighting on the side of good, Simon's only response is to be more careful in choosing his words (making him the only man on earth who would think having a soul-mate who can detect lies isn't a big deal). It was also interesting seeing how Simon, who holds the human title "Duke of Hurstgrove" and often goes by “Duke”, balances a life or death war with life in the public eye. I can't imagine celebrities like Paris Hilton or Colin Farrell having a secret, wizardly identity underneath the constant public scrutiny, and Simon certainly struggles with just that task.

While ENTICE ME AT TWILIGHT was an easy book to pick up and jump into, I found I was most interested in subplots rather than Felicia and Simon themselves. It is apparent from back-story provided in ENTICE ME AT TWILIGHT that there are some great relationships and uncommon plot gambits in this series' prior books. I plan on picking up books one through three and a half for my TBR pile, and will be in a hurry to buy any future book that will tell me more about the chief wizard's disappearing soul-mate or Shock, a complex mind-reader who can't seem to decide which side of the war he is on.

While I enjoyed the tantalizing (and damaged) future heroes in the background, I was never particularly engaged by Felicia and Simon themselves. Both of the main characters made decisions I found frustrating, and that decreased my enjoyment of their particular plot line. To someone familiar with the series (and perhaps invested in Simon from previous books), this book could be much more satisfying. As for me, while my appetite has been whetted for more of the Doomsday Brethren, the main event in ENTICE ME AT TWILIGHT just didn't click.

This fourth instalment of the Doomsday Brethren series was easy to pick up and get right into despite having read the previous book a year ago. Shayla Black has delivered a welcome return to the world of the Brethren, a group of Wizards keeping the secrets of magic and fighting the evil Matthias’s plans to cause anarchy with his, um, Anarki. The world that Black has created follows some of the usual formulas of a successful paranormal series (a hero and heroine finding their happily ever after,...more This fourth instalment of the Doomsday Brethren series was easy to pick up and get right into despite having read the previous book a year ago. Shayla Black has delivered a welcome return to the world of the Brethren, a group of Wizards keeping the secrets of magic and fighting the evil Matthias’s plans to cause anarchy with his, um, Anarki. The world that Black has created follows some of the usual formulas of a successful paranormal series (a hero and heroine finding their happily ever after, while some force works to thwart them; magical/paranormal/superhero chicanery and a suspension of the normal world view) but unlike most series, this one is set in England. Black entangles thread of Merlin and the Arthurian legend into this tale, which adds a delightful frisson. I like the different tone of the dialogue between the wizards with its flavour of snark and Britishness (for international readership- the two are not necessarily the same!).

The couple in focus here are Duke and Felicia, who at the start of the novel is engaged to Duke’s brother and planning to live a life of quiet desperation. Then Duke crashes into her life and those plans change. For Felicia holds a special power, both magical and over Duke, but it takes her the whole book to make peace with it.
While I enjoyed the book, especially the satisfyingly chunky multiple story arcs with old favourite characters, I really didn’t gel well with Felicia as a main character. I found her constant OCD-looping about her dead sister, and her naïveté about the fact that she would eventually have to have sex with Mason if she marries him, rather annoying. Duke, however, was a sympathetic character. Gentlemanly and considerate, yet also passionate and self-sacrificing.

The evil Mathias is at the centre of the plot movement- and what an odious miscreant he is. He kills a much loved character and the ramifications of his previous evil machinations continue to be felt, with Black leaving us with the promise of more to come.

Overall, I felt the need to keep the pages turning and while it may not be a book I will reread, it was a most enjoyable weekend interlude with some of my favourite wizards.

So far Black has created a group of smart, sexy, heartthrob wizards. There is every persona you could hope for; from the proper aristocrat, the hard core bad ass, the lost love, to the avenged warrior, the fearless leader and every one in between. I fell instantly in Book 1 for Ice and Shock as they were introduced. Ice had his book (book 3) and in each one Black gives us just a bit more of Shock. A tidbit here, a reminder there; I can not wait for his book! I have a feeling I'll be waiting a long time. We can't forget the mates, the women behind the men. They are pivotal to the protection of the Doomsday diary. Each mate coming into the team just as powerful as her male. (even more so)
I'm still amazed at how Black gives you so much in each book, the main romance, the captivating battles, and the side stories that are set up for so many of the characters.

Coming off book 3 Lucan and Anka are still at wits, keeping the desire to see the outcome of their relationship maxed in our thoughts; and of course for me, what will that be for Shock. Picking up right where we left off, Black gives us Duke (Simon) and adds in an unexpected woman with a tremendous power. I found this book fresh life, I loved Black's use of Duke's paparazzi world to incorporate the relationship with Felicia.

As Felicia realizes just how much of her past she has to come to terms with, Duke is there to push her to the ultimate level. Counting on the ability to love in order to be saved, Black keeps the saga alive. We can't forget Black's signature steam - erotic scenes are her specialty. Mathias is not gone, as he continues to cause chaos and leave death where ever he has been. Once again, our brethren is at the top of the league. Adding a twist, Black keeps you guessing if our leading couple will end up in their happily ever after. As you end - - you've got one of the best cliff hangers with Anka...

When Mason confessed his adoration for Felicia, she knew then, that it wouldn't have worked out between them. She wasn't marrying him because she loved him. No, she intended on marrying him because he was safe. But, now that she heard Mason's confession, she didn't think she could go through with it. How dense can someone be? Of course he loved her, he asked her to marry him! So, when Duke attempted to take her from her wedding, I did't understand her problem. I mean seriously...her life was in danger, she knew Duke was telling the truth, and she was being given the perfect opportunity to bale out of the wedding.

While the chemistry was there in the beginning, I couldn't help but wish Duke would find another mate and leave Felicia to Mason. I don't know how many times, I wanted to slap her, shake her, something...I mean come on... She wasn't confused, she knew her own feelings, she just didn't want to admit them. No, she was in constantly denial, whiny and too self absorbed. She knew Duke was sacrificing everything to keep her safe. But, she hid behind her loyalty to Mason...the man she didn't love. Then, when she decided that it was okay to bed with Duke, but she wouldn't allow herself to fall in love with him...Why you ask? Because her sister had a bad realtionship...OMG!!! BooHoo!!! I never wanted to scream more than I did at that moment. I was like..."That was it? That was the big secret? The big tramatic event? OMG!!! Get over it already... you stupid girl". I absolutely loved when Ice shamed her and Bram gave her a big verbal smackdown. Hell Yeah, you go Bram!

Overall, this was a great read. As you can sense from above...the author pulled me in, got me emotionally enthralled and passionate with her writing skills. I really loved the underlining plot of the series and how the author created a crediable alternate tale to the Merlin and Morganna le Fay mythology. The characters were very engaging, and Duke should have been titled a saint for all the crap he went through. He was probably my favorite. I also enjoyed the way the author entertwined the other Brethern and thier relationships, as a way to update and tease of things to come. If you have never read this series, you are missing out. This book can be read as a standalone, but, I recommend reading the whole series, you won't be disappointed.

I loved Entice Me at Twilight! Why? Because the whole story rocks! Shayla Black is a master story teller as she returns to her complex and super sexy paranormal series, the Doomsday Brethren. In this series there are wizards and magic that most of the human population are unaware of. Unfortunately, one wizard named Matthias is determined to win absolute control. He has recruited other wizards and amassed an inhuman army. And only the valiant Doomsday Brethren has a chance to stop him!

In this story the uptight and super sexy aristocrat Simon Northam Duke of Hurstgrove is half human and half wizard. He is summoned by their leader Bram to find an untouchable. An untouchable is rare person who is unaffected by magic. Simon discovers that their enemy Mathias plans to find and use an untouchable to release Morganna le Fay, a powerful witch and harness her power. (Because only an untouchable can walk through the deadly magical traps that entomb her.)

Simon soon discovers that he has been near the untouchable recently because that person has affected his magical aura. And he realizes it must be one of the guests at his brother Mason’s wedding. But when they arrive and 'crash' the party Simon is dismayed to discover that the untouchable is Mason's extremely desirable bride to be Felicia! And to his brother’s ire Simon finds that he must kidnap her to protect her. But Simon is further conflicted because he is extremely attracted to her and doesn’t want to hurt his brother.

Felicia craves a life that is pain free and thinks she has found it with her dependable best
friend Mason. But she discovers to her distress and shock that Mason really loves her and not just as a friend. Felicia knew they would eventually have sexual relations as a couple but when Mason kisses her she panics. When Mason's wildly attractive and wastrel brother tells her that she is in danger and abducts her from her own wedding she is upset and oddly relieved. But his crazy talk about death and magic is just mad... or is it?

This was a fantastic story because it has so much going on and the 2 main characters are such a joy to read. Simon and Felicia had a lot of chemistry. I enjoyed the intensity between the 2 of them and their forbidden love made it even more enthralling and delicious to read. Felicia is no pushover. Simon has always been a bit standoffish and it was a pleasure to see Felicia break his hard won control. He tries to stay away from her since he doesn't want to further jeopardize his relationship with his brother but his attraction to her is soo intense!

I also loved how this author flawlessly juggled the intertwining storylines of the other Brethren. Lucan nearly went insane and is trying to recover the severing of his bond with his mate Anka. Anka has been abducted and abused by the enemy and now survives by living with Shock a man whose loyalty is ambiguous. Shock’s character is tortured and has a lot of depth and I would love to find out his past! I would also like to know about Bram whose missing mate is mysterious, elusive and I am eager to find out what happens once he finally gets his hands on her...

If you have not read this series, you really don't know what you are missing! (Especially if you like paranormal romances with a lot of substance and a real plot.) The Doomsday Brethren and their trials are riveting to read. Hot heroes, sexy and sassy heroines and some really wicked evilness make for a phenomenal series. This book did not disappoint but it made me want more!! So my only complaint would be I wish Shayla Black wrote faster!!

Simon has lived a privileged human life. He’s a titled Duke. He is also trying to save magickind from a very evil wizard along with the other members of the Doomsday Brethren. Shock informs Duke that his magical signature reflects that he has touched the Untouchable recently. Duke knows that this could have only happened during the wedding planning that is going on with his half-brother. Shock also drops the bomb as to why the Untouchable is being sought after by the uber evil Mathias. Shock is chock full of Shocks! The Untouchable just happens to be his half-brothers (who he has a poor relationship with) fiancé.

Felicia ruined this book in my opinion. She (self-confessed) admits she has a “bullshit barometer,” yet Simon/Duke spends the entire book trying to convince her that he is honest and trustworthy. Felicia has had a tragic loss in her life. I was shocked at the big reveal of the whys of her problems. I expected it to be something absolutely horrific, it’s not. I also had issues with her marrying a man that she did not love, did not have any sexual desires for, but she wants a home and children with him. I am curious how Felicia and her being an Untouchable will affect the entire Brethren. She prevents magic from being used in her presence. Can she live with the entire team as they live now?

I enjoyed the story around the couple. Mathias is going to attempt to resurrect Morganna le Fay. The Brethren must stop this. They have continually fought to put an end to Mathias, yet the resurrected wizard seems next to impossible to kill. With a resurrection of Morganna they will either be fighting two extremely evil, ridiculously powerful magicians, or Morganna will not want to fight by Mathias, so she’ll kill him and reign magic terror all on her own. Either scenario equates to major problems for the Brethren.

Readers also find out some interesting pieces of information concerning Bram and his very elusive mate. I am very curious as to where that hot mess is going to go.

A big 4 1/2 stars for me. I REALLY liked this book, it was a good addition to a fabulous series. Shayla takes you on an adventure with Witch's, Wizard's and really evil bad guy's where love conquers all. I love all the characters in this series. The imagination Shayla uses on them is fantastic. The heat was very good in the love scenes but I wish there would have been one or two more, LOL! The thing I liked least about this book was it took the heroine a bit too long to totally trust and let the...more

Well, I like the Doomsday Brethren series. It isn't top of my list, but I find them solidly entertaining. They don't stay with me long, but I enjoy them while I am reading them, and this one was no exception.

This is Harry Potter for big girls, with creepy zombies, a murdering, raping bad guy on the loose, and a brotherhood of wizards devoted to saving mankind. I still have a snicker when one of them whips out the wand, but other than that it is like pretty much straightforward. This time around, we focus on Duke, the blue-blood wizard playboy and his "untouchable" mate Felicia.

Duke is relatively young by wizard standards, but he is determined to do his part in the war. What he doesn't expect is to find his destined mate...at her wedding to another man. Who happens to be his brother. Needless to say, things are complicated. Making matters worse is that Felicia is an Untouchable - one whose mere presence stops magic in it's tracks. She is also wanted by the evil Mathias for that very reason, and what Mathias wants he usually gets. But in this case, Duke is determined to keep Felicia safe, no matter what the cause.

This was a good, fast paced and interesting story. A lot goes on in this one, and it didn't take me long to get back into the swing of things in this magic world. Duke was great - just the right combination of protective Alpha warrior and guilt-riddled brother. Bram and the rest of the brotherhood were in fine form, too (looking to see how Anka and Lucan make out in the next book). Entice Me at Twilight is also pretty hot and steamy, which Shayla Black does very well.

What dropped this from four stars to three for me was Felicia. I didn't dislike her, but I wanted to tell her to grow up. In all things she was a mature, capable woman - except when it came to knowing her own heart. Yes, she had a somewhat sad past, but her constant "poor me I can't let you in in case you hurt me" got old after a couple of hundred pages. By the time she does get her act together it is almost too late for everyone. Even the other characters tell her off for it, but she is still stuck in self-defense mode for almost all of the book, no matter who or what is on the line. Her refusal to see the truth in Duke and what she meant to him just got old after a while.

There were some plot twists and turns that I didn't see coming - some good and some not so good. I figured that there aren't many books left in this series, but it seems to be taking a new direction. There are some developments with Tynan that surprised me, as well. So, what I can say is that this is a good book, good story and characters, except for the heroine whose guardedness grated on my nerves.

Another fantastic read though some bits of the story are more enjoyable than others. If I have to ask myself why, I guess it's because the lack of Shock. I think he only made an appearance in the beginning of the book.

And the death of Tynan was a bit puzzling. As far as I'm concerned, Shock is part of the Brethren and even though he had hand delivered Tynan to Mathias to make his role as a double agent convincing, Shock's role in Tynan's death remained a mystery. I doubt Shock would just stand b...more

I began this series with book #3 and felt lost during several aspects of the plot. It wasn't enough to hinder the story in Possess Me at Midnight though. It was mostly just some background stuff that intrigued me or left me with questions. I didn't blame the author for the lack of back story however. But after reading book 4 and gaining a great deal more information of previous events I'm changing my tune a little. He had only been to his home to meet his brother's intended bride, Felicia and those who will be attending the wedding later in the evening. Felicia is literally headed to the alter with Duke's brother Mason when he relizes she is the one. Mathasis shows up as well and Duke is forced to make a run for it with Felicia. While driving for the safety of Ice's cave lair, Duke accepts that Felicia is his mate.

Felicia has an emotional baracade around her heart. Although engaged to Mason, she has never really given her heart to him either. It's through a hidden and unique gift Felicia carries that allows her to see the truth and realizes that Duke has his sights set on her mind, soul, and body. It's a challenge to the very end for Duke to win this woman's heart while trying to keep her out of Mathasis's hands.

This book, like previous installments, move the story of the Doomsday Brethren and evil wizard Mathasis forward. I love the series so that was a big plus in this book's favor. On the downside, I did not enjoy this installment as much as the previous book. Felicia was a strong heroine with plenty of fire and sparks but her whinning got on my nerves. I found myself wanting more of Shock, Anka, and Lucan. That storyline is due to come to a head. I am hoping the next book will bring us Shock's story. He is a puzzle.

If you are a fan of the series, you will find that all the ingredients you like are present in spades. Very sexy and bold. Mathasis is up to no good, again but that's what he does best. Bram is still looking for his missing mate. The next book is due in early 2012. I will be grabbing it as soon as it hits the shelves. (less)

Duke and Felicia's story - I loved Duke a.k.a Simon - he was such a good hero. Sexy, caring, thoughtful, he loved with a passion and fought for what he wanted. I would have given this a five except I got a little sick of Felicia talking about not being worthy and being sorry and coming between two brothers. The only thing she knows that makes her different is her ability to smell a lie.

Anyway, Matthias has his sights set on Felicia. He wants to use her to open the tomb of Morgan Le Fay and resurrect her. So, Simon whisks her away from the wedding to protect her. They fight their attraction to each other, mostly because they both care about Mason's feelings. But soon, even that is not enough to keep them apart. What does serve as a barrier between them are Felicia's serious emotional problems. She is so afraid of letting someone in that she has cut herself off from love. It's frustrating to watch Simon put himself out there for her, over and over, while she continues to hold on to her insecurities.

We're told Felicia's problems stem from her sister's suicide. That just didn't hold up for me. It would have been easier for me to accept loyalty to Mason as a stumbling block... but maybe that's just me. I liked the book, though not quite as much as Possess Me at Midnight. The teaser at the end makes it look like the next book will be Lucien's, so I am looking forward to that.

Also in this book, we lost a member of the Brethren to a gruesome death. Not only was I upset by the loss, but I didn't feel like it got nearly enough attention. I felt like this should have been made a much bigger deal than it was.

One of my favorite books of this series. I enjoyed the romance, loved Simon, enjoyed the suspense portion of the story (kind of reminded me of the first 5 minutes of the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark"), and the interaction with the other characters from earlier novels.
