3 May 2011 STOP SNORING, BERNARD! by Zachariah O'Hora, Henry Holt, April 2011, 32p., ISBN: 978-0-8050-9002-4

"It's raining, it's pouring,
The old man is snoring."
-- Traditional nursery rhyme

I snore. I always have, and I figure I always will. I've snored as a kid, as a teen, and as an adult. When I was but knee-high to a grasshopper, I'd often wake up in the morning all alone. All of my stuffed animals would have finally given up in the middle of the night and headed next-door to my sister's room...more

As in real life, there is no solution to dealing with a snorer than to love them and put up with it.
I can empathize with this, but it doesn't make for a satisfying story. I'm not sure the ending will satisfy kids not old enough to philosophize about this--and who sleep too soundly to notice Daddy's snoring!

The art work is cute, with an old fashioned style and choice of colors that reminds me of classics like Caps For Sale and Curious George but its perspectives bother me. In order to show Bernar...more

This books deals with feeling rejected or unwanted for something about you that you can't help. I think most children will deal with feeling this way at sometime in their childhood and I'm glad that the issue is addressed in a cute way that will appeal to children, but the book is rather short and I don't think the issue was dealt with well or thoroughly. By the end of the book his friends want him back because they couldn't sleep without him, that leaves me feeling like his friends are using hi...more

A likable little book about an otter with a snoring problem. After being banished by the other otters for sawing his logs too loudly, Bernard looks for another place to lay his head. After disturbing the alligators, giraffes, and elephants, Bernard finally finds a spot that will work - a cave. But when their loud friend is nowhere to be found, the otters realize they want Barnard back.
The acrylic artwork, full of thick outlines and hand-lettering, lends an amiable quality to the proceedings. -TJ

Bernard loves taking naps at the zoo with his otter mates. Curling up has only draw back, however. No one is able to sleep with his loud snoring. Grumpy Giles finally has it and says, "Snore somewhere else, Bernard!" Bernard decides to check out for the sake of "otters," He tried a lake, the fountain and even a cave. Each time he is turned away by the zoo animals. He finally decides to leave the zoo entirely when he is stopped by his otter friends who had been sleepless and panicking without him...more

3 stars? 4 stars? 3? 4?

There are a couple of reasons why I gave this book 4 stars.

a. I'm imagining a room full of 3-6 year olds chanting "stop snoring, Bernard!" Funny. It'll be even funnier if I have them all make the sound of Bernard snoring.

b. The otters are SO CUTE!

The story is simple and not new or exciting, but the fact that it it BEGGING me to read it at storytime gives it that extra oomph to bump it up a star level.

A fun story about an otter (you don't see too many books about otters!) who snores and bothers all of his friends at the zoo. But when he tries to leave, they all miss him very much. I used the repetitive phrase "stop snoring Bernard" with the audience and it made the story great! This was my final "Dream Big" Family Story time and it fit in well with the night theme.

Not much surprising in this one, but my goodness Bernard is adorable! I loved the illustrations (acrylic, but I thought at first they were wood block!). Bernard the otter gets kicked of several places where he tries to sleep because his snoring is too loud. He worries he won't have anywhere to sleep, but the otters want him back! Sweet little story, but not a lot there.

Meet many different zoo animals and of course, the otter Bernard who snores too much. He is eventually missed though.
There's much that you can do with this novel in storytime. You can have children make their own otter puppet, assign children different animals in the story, have a game of otter limbo, and have a time for the fishing game since otters adore fish.

Cute illustrations, but the story is very thin and doesn't quiet hold up to the end. I really thought he would get some sleep with the bats, but they kicked him out, like everyone else. Why his otter family takes him back at the end is vague. My young sons were unimpressed, too -- and we had just been to the zoo to see the otters!

This is a cute little book about an otter who has a snoring problem. Everywhere that he goes he is kicked out for snoring. He starts to feel unwelcome. He wonders off and the family starts to miss the otter. They go out to find him and bring him home. You could introduce a lesson on excepting others/building community is the classroom.

A story about a little otter who snores. Bernard's snoring bothers everyone - the other otters, the crocodiles, the giraffes, the elephants. He just can't find a place to sleep where his snoring isn't bothering someone. I didn't feel that there was any resolution at the end of the story. Good, expressive illustrations.

Students at all grade levels found this book appealing. A group of fifth grade boys even chose this book as a read aloud to share with younger students at the Pancake Breakfast. This book wasn't on my radar for a Caldecott, so I was surprised when it was a Society of Illustrator's Honor Book.

Bernard the otter has one little problem... he snores, loudly. This sort of cute story tells about how Bernard tries to find a new place to sleep. Finally, his friends, inexplicably, tell him that they miss him and want him to come back. I like the pictures enough to give this 3 stars.
Hope Johnson
This is a cute book about a little otter who snores. When Bernard found a place by himself to sleep all of the animals missed him. This book is a book that can teach children that even though somebody does something they may not like, if that person was not around they would miss their friend.

Cute, funny, fun illos. I was a little confused why sleeping in the bat cave didn't work since the bats sleep during the day and Bernard would sleep at night but I guess napping during the day would be a problem and maybe I'm just thinking about it a little too hard. :]
Nanci Booher
A sweet story about a snoring otter and how he keeps everyone awake. He gets yelled at by Grumpy Giles and so Bernard sets off to find a new place to sleep. His otter friends so discover that they miss Bernard and want him back.
Leah
Super cute illustrations and a nice little tale about snoring and friendship. On the longer side, and not a lot of opportunity for interaction, so better for school aged children and perhaps class visits.
Melissa
A cute story about an otter who keeps everyone awake with his snoring. A simple but cute story. Only 3 stars because it is a bit too simple and it didn't really keep the attention of my young story time attendees.
Jen
super cute. teaches acceptance. also touches on different kinds of animals at the zoo. bold clean illustrations. kids can particpate by saying "snore" and such.
Tricia
Bernard the otter snores when he sleeps...and bothers everyone no matter where he tries to bed down. Can he find a place to sleep where he is at least tolerated?
D'Anne
I could not love the art in this book more. The story is also adorable. Poor dude just wants to sleep, but apparently has some major sinus problems.
Terryann
i love the retro illustrations, reminds me of the old syd hoff books i loved as a kid. also love snoring out loud. the kids think it's hilarious.

Ending could have been a shade better but I have to give it 5 stars for the charming character and the mindboggling illos. Beautiful.

PA's choice for One Book; One Community for young readers. I thought it was cute and kid-friendly, but nothing really spectacular...
Christen
So funny! And the illustrations are simple enough to be used with toddlers up through kindergarten.
Hannah
Bernard the otter is one of the cutest picture book animals I've seen since "A sick day for Amos McGee".
Alicia
For 3 and up. Great for bedtime storytimes and little ones with snorers in their families.
