First things first, I would have to say I absolutely adored this cover! When I initially picked the book for review it was the cover that drew me in and had me instantly giddy when I opened the package from the post. Everything from the colors to the font and the binding of the book with deckle edging is gorgeous. I’d also have to say I was extremely intrigued to read more about the life of a high powered banking and corporate attorney in New York because oddly enough, that’s what my own husband does for a living here in California. From the description to the cover this was a debut novel I was eagerly looking forward to reading. Unfortunately it didn’t hit all the high points I was hoping for, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

For me Catherine was initially an incredibly likable character. Both my own mother and sister are fluent in French and so I grew up with a passion for a country I haven’t yet had the privilege of visiting. Because of this I found the added bits of French language thrown in quite delightful and felt it quite enhanced not only the story, but Catherine’s character as well. I also quite enjoyed the fashion that was scattered throughout the novel, it was never so overpowering that I couldn’t move forward with my reading and I quite enjoy that. In addition to her culture and the fashion in the novel I also loved her relationships with her assistant, Rikash, as well as a few of the other male characters in the book, Antoine being my absolute favorite.

One of the things that had me slightly confused was Catherine’s lack of drive when it came to the negativity being directed at her. Many times I felt that her inability to deal with difficult coworkers and clients could have been quite funny, but I was too caught up in the fact that I thought she should be more aggressive. Because in my personal experience with attorneys, you don’t get to be a part of a “big” firm without being at least somewhat aggressive. Her female counterpart at the firm, Bonnie, was more what I was expecting; bold, ruthless and conniving. Now, I could be completely wrong on this due to the fact that she initially came from the Paris office and they may have been much more laid back there, though I’m not sure that would happen either.

In addition to my inability to grab hold of the more demure New York attorney, Catherine, I also had a bit of a problem with the stories length. Not so much that I dislike lengthy books, but to be honest I feel like the first 150 to 200 pages of the book did not exactly grab my attention. I enjoyed reading the beginning at times, it was nice “listening-in” on a chat between her and her assistant or any other number of other characters, but after a while I started truly wanting the story to start getting somewhere. Having said that, once Lafleche advanced the story and things started happening with Catherine I was taken in and couldn’t put it down. Without a doubt the last half of the book was fabulous!

Overall, I’m so glad I read J’adore New York. It was a new look behind the scenes at what goes on in a big firm in New York with a delightful romance to top it all off. And though it may not have grabbed my attention in the first half of the book, the second half was, without a doubt, one you won’t put down. For lovers of France, New York, fashion, legal fiction, romance and much more this will be a fantastic addition to their reading library. An excellent debut novel from Isabella Lafleche, a new author I’m certainly keeping my eyes on for future reading.(less)

Catherine Lambert is an attorney with Edwards and White. They are a global corporation. Catherine works in the Paris branch but when she receives a mass email that the company is looking for staff to transfer to their New York location, Catherine accepts. J’adore New York has constantly caught my eye at the bookstore, and when my friend finished it in a matter of days, I asked to borrow it. Figuring I’d enjoy it, I didn’t realize how quickly I’d actually get through it as well! This debut novel from Isabelle Laflèche, a fellow Canadian, is a fun and entertaining read.

The novel follows the story of Catherine, a Parisian lawyer transferred to her firm’s New York City office and her struggles to prove herself in a very different work culture. Immersed in an office with high-powered partners, backstabbing secretaries and sleazy clients, Catherine attempts to keep her head above water while juggling a social life, a love life and a killer sense of style. Not until her world starts spinning out of control does she question what she really wants.

The mark of a good storyteller is swaying the reader to feel how you want them to feel – annoying characters are really irritating, stressful situations make you want to tear your hair out – and Laflèche does just that. I almost had anxiety attacks just reading about her stressful office encounters! Rikash, her assistant, was a bit too over-the-top though… I cringed every time I read him call her “dah-ling”. I also felt that Catherine, being a Parisian new to the Big Apple, seemed quite fluent and savvy with the “Americanized” mannerisms and slang. Perhaps her 6 years at the firm in Paris allowed her to become fluent, not only in business-English but social banter as well. She’s a character you want to root for though. Throughout all the stress and frustrations she goes through, you’re right there with her, cheering her on, hoping she succeeds.

One other little personal pet peeve of mine is when I read grown men “tickling” someone, written to be endearing or romantic. I don’t know about you, but the image I have in my head is a handsome grown man being all goo-goo and tickling their love interest. It just seems unrealistic and not quite the manly sex-appeal that the moment may be calling for.

Finally, I’d like to leave off with a quote from the book that I connected with. I feel it’s a great mantra to live by: Your passion is waiting for your courage to catch up.

"J'adore New York" is the debut novel from Isabelle Lafleche, and I look forward to reading more from her. The story flowed, and she kept it interesting even when explaining technical laws. It probably helped that Lafleche was a lawyer in Quebec and she used her prior experience to explain the trickier terms to those of us knowing little about the law. Despite its length of 390 pages, there's lots going on and before I realized it, I was at the end.

I loved Catherine, the main character. She brings to New York her optimism and enthusiasm, and even when New York shows its true colours, Catherine tries to hold on these qualities in herself. She spends some time soul-searching, to discover what it is that she really stands for, and those parts of the book quickly became my favourites. The underlying message was that our future is not set in stone, but is rather a result of the choices that we make. Another stand-out character was the flamboyant and funny Rikash, Catherine's secretary in New York. Although he is a secondary character, he manages to keep things light, and I enjoyed the scenes he appeared in.

"J'adore New York" takes a serious topic, shady deals and corporate corruption, and manages to make it both fresh and fun. The result is the perfect beach read- light and easy to read, yet containing enough substance to make things interesting. It provides an insiders look into what really happens inside the walls of a prestigious law firm.(less)

Excited to have her dream come true, Catherine's determined to prove herself at the New York office and hopefully, make partner soon.

J'adore New York isn't so much about fashion but more about life and survival at one of the big New York law firms. Although at first, I was overwhelmed by the number of characters in the book and also too many things happening too soon that made me go 'okay, wait a minute, what's going on?', that soon changed.

I guess New York is a the big leagues, no matter what your job is. Catherine's the victim of mind games, office politics and general bitchiness from her colleagues and she has to deal with it all while deciding what kind of life she wants for herself. I really enjoy Lawyer talk, I always have and Isabelle Lafleche's created some pretty interesting and entertaining clients and cases in this novel, right from the sleazy pervert to a money laundering fraud. During Catherine's short stay in New York, she faces all kinds of crap and it makes her question her life and choices and the book is about her journey towards finding love and happiness.

I really enjoyed the different, big cast of J'adore New York and I liked that each of them were unique and had very different personalities like Rikash, Antoine, the bitchy assistants, Harry, Nolan etc. All of them really.
Rikash is totally a unique and easily likable character. There was this moment where he gives Catherine his cure for hangovers and I burst out laughing. I'm not sure if others would find it hilarious but I had NO idea that 'Gatorade and Dosa' could cure hangovers and it was just such a funny thing to say.
Rikash definitely played the charming gay Indian guy pretty well!

If I had to point out specifically what didn't appeal to me about this book, it would have to be the romance. I get it, it's all different in New York. Though I loved the chemistry between Catherine and Antoine in the beginning, I was let down at the end as I expected more and it got a little too sappy for my taste. The big, romantic gestures came out of no where and too soon in their relationship (although 'too soon' was near the end of the novel). Rikash and Catherine's friendship/relationship was the strength of the story, followed by the law firm drama. They're also the reason I could stay up late to read the entire book so quickly.

J'adore New York is a made-for-movie book that has a bit of Devil Wears Prada, some Sex and the City and a lot of Wall Street all in one package that makes it a fast, enjoyable read. If you enjoy Chick Lits based on life in New York, J'adore New York definitely gives you a feel of what it's really like in the Upper East Side. (less)

I loved this book! The Devil Wears Prada meets the lawyer world. My two favorite subjects in books high fashion and a hardworking career. The character of Catherine is a likable character and one that the reader will come to love. Some of the other characters in the book will keep you guessing as to where their loyalties lie. This book is the perfect debate book for Isabelle Lafleche.

See why I love school? My last book, read over Xmas holidays, took me two weeks to get through. I read all but the last few pages of this one in one day. The only reason I will miss my daily five hour commute to school!!

I've really enjoyed reading this book. As a student at law, it scared me a little of the practice in a big office. Especially since the author wrote from her personal experience. I was so so so thrilled when Isabelle Laflèche told me she would be more than happy to send me a copy of her (absolutely fabulous) debut novel. Let me tell you this: I finished it on the same day it arrived in my mailbox. It was seriously addictive and I loved it so much. J'Adore New York is the third book I've devoured in a day this year and I'm more than happy to gush about how perfect it is to wrap up a fantastic year!

Do you get the feeling when you know the book you're reading is a total gem and you've got a really strong feeling that you'll love it just from reading the first chapter? For me, this usually happens when I read a Sophie Kinsella book, or any by my favourite authors (Paige Toon, Lindsey Kelk, Jane Costello, etc.) so I'm proud to announce that Isabelle Laflèche is joining that list! From the moment I flipped to chapter 2, I knew I would love this book. I mean, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't know what to expect when I read the first few pages, right? But J'Adore New York is different for this matter. Maybe it's due to my longing to read it, or the really interesting plot or maybe I really adore Isabelle's writing style.

Either way, I loved the book! Sound the alarm and throw the confetti! It's been a while since I've read a book that gives me a thrill to finish it as soon as I can because I'm too excited for what Catherine Lambert, lawyer extraordinaire has to offer, or her glamorous life in the Big Apple. Ooh, and have I mentioned? Catherine is French! I have never come across a French heroine so she has to be the first and it is very refreshing to see things from a French perspective! I wonder if it's true that the reason French women stay so thin and slim is because they have accelerated metabolism?

Anyway, back to the book. Hmmm. What should I write about it without sounding like a total gushing idiot? In short, I loved it. It was a different sort of chick lit - very clever, smart and high profile-ish chick lit (Catherine is a lawyer in a big firm in NYC so you get the picture - haute couture, fine dining, etc.). With Catherine as the guide, the book takes readers to the secret lives of lawyers working in well-established law firms to the ugly truth behind every deal (enter bitch boss from hell) and also the glitz and glamour of the lives of the elites on Upper East Side. Think of it as an adult-version of Gossip Girl (I'm a GG obsesso, sorry!).

Catherine Lambert - gorgeous, French, well-mannered and driven. Seriously, she's such a wonderful character to read about, especially when the book is written from her point of view. Everything was so different yet familiar through her eyes, am I making sense or am I blinded by the charms of Catherine Lambert, French glamazon? At first, she seemed like a really headstrong, determined power maniac, but as the book progresses, I soon warmed up to her and her love for Dior. Besides Catherine, there's one more character who I absolutely adored and that's Rikash, her assistant! Kind, funny, sweet and super supportive. He's Indian and gay and real sweetheart, his presence made the book light and fluffy but with substance at the same time. If I ever work as a lawyer in a multi-million firm, searching for a Rikash as my assistant would be imperative.

To top it off, the ending was beautiful, unexpected and promises a continuation - psst! J'Adore Paris is out next May! - I can hardly wait! It was an utterly fabulous debut by Isabelle Laflèche which left me wanting more of Catherine's story as she continues her journey to Paris with a handsome boyfriend! I am so so so glad I read it as it's one of the best books I've read. Trust me, you'll love this. It's light, funny and sharp - I devoured it like a delectable mille-feuille!

I had such high hopes for this novel. A Parisian woman moves to NYC! Written by a Canadian! Sadly, it just... fell completely flat. The writing is technically sufficient, but the characters are so flimsy and hollow. Isabelle Laflèche’s J’adore New York is a type of women’s fiction with which I’m quite familiar: young woman arrives in the big city with a law degree and big dreams; young woman is derailed by vindictive, unkind colleagues; young woman must decide if having the big job is really worth the mess of it all — and if she can stand giving up love, family and freedom in exchange for the corner office.

Yes, friends, we’ve heard it all before — but that didn’t mean it didn’t work here. Laflèche combines enough unique characteristics in Catherine that I didn’t feel like I was reading the same book over and over again. And Catherine — graceful, intelligent, powerful, French – wasn’t a heroine with which I already felt familiar. It’s cliche to say, “Oh, she’s a great female role model!” but truly, she was. Where the plot could have detoured with Catherine suddenly becoming a flustered, swooning lady who throws all her good sense out the window for a man, she didn’t. She was better than that. And thank goodness, because that’s precisely the type of book I want to throw out the window.

The plot here moves along quickly, though not much seems to happen. It’s all about Catherine’s internal struggle: choosing happiness; love over doubt; freedom over a stifling atmosphere that no longer makes her happy. While this isn’t a traditional coming-of-age story, it is a book about a woman rediscovering her passion . . . and her descriptions of couture and sample sales had me drooling. Laflèche never gets bogged down in the details, though, a la “Sex And The City” — and thank goodness. While I enjoy an occasional mention of a gorgeous shoes or sumptuous fabrics, I hate when books feel like a shout-out to every fashionable designer on the planet. Are they paying for the plugs?

And another huge plus? Many books feature “powerful” women, like lawyers, but fail to ever actually show them working. It’s understood that they’re successful without us getting an inkling of how they got that way. Laflèche brings us right into Catherine’s firm — and it’s anything but boring. With all the politics going on and crazy, colorful coworkers, Edwards & White is a pretty happening place. But even someone like me — someone not all that interested in law — could get a feel for what it would be like to work somewhere like this. As a character, Catherine is known for explaining law jargon in an easy, accessible way — and I’ll go out on a limb and say she gets that from Laflèche.

Fans of women’s fiction and New York-based novels will find a pleasant, if not earth-shattering, story in J’adore New York. While I didn’t finish the book feeling enlightened or changed, it was definitely a worthwhile experience — and a lawyer’s law novel.(less)

J'Adore New York was not what I was expecting. I thought there was going to be a lot more New York and far less legal jargon throughout the pages. Due to the specific use of legal terminology used by the author, I, as a reader who knows very little about the law, hardly understood what I was reading. I was really disappointed by this book. I never really got a feeling for the main character Catherine, and for someone who is French and moving to NYC, I felt that the book used too many American colloquialisms that a European would just not even think to use. Plus, for a character that was so dedicated to her work and doing the right thing, I was confused by a lot of her choices throughout the book. Definitely not worth the time it took to get through it.

Shelves: chick-lit

This was about a 2.5 star book but it was sooooo much better than the book I read right before this, I gave it an upgrade. Catherine, a French lawyer, moves to NY and has to deal with extra work, a client that comes on to her and another client who is very handsome. She also is having problems with coworkers. None of the problems are very interesting or compelling, but it was an easy read. Can't recommend.

A lovely and interesting tale! People with innate fashion sense are always enviable. ;) I loved the peek into corporate law and the devastating hard work behind it all.I also loved that this book doesn't have one sex scene, though there is, of course, implied sex.
I actually picked up this book because I have a friend who is obsessed with New York and I'm a sucker for French. It was worth the read.

Ugh. Complete crap. I liked the cover and took a chance. What a waste. Terrible characters, terrible writing, boring storyline, main character was a completely self-obsessed loser. How anyone is supposed to believe that this woman is a high powered lawyer is beyond me. More like a talentless Bridget Jones without the humour.

Granted, not the deepest novel in the world, but I enjoyed very much. First, as a lawyer, I totally identified with the stressful law environment (particularly at firms), the politics and so on, the logistics (yes, that is nerdy lawyerly of me to say). Second, I love the discussion of labels, designers and NYC. Third, the descriptions of French-American culture shock was enjoyable too. The plot wasn't bad either. Will it change your life? This is an oddly choppy book, it is quite good in parts and noticeably badly written in other parts. It is kind of like the Devil Wears Prada but about lawyers. I have to admit, I found it strangely compelling and read the whole book in two days.

I'm always up for supporting fellow Canadian authors, so when I saw this gorgeous cover at the airport before flying back to London, I grabbed it. It's a great insider's view of corporate life in New York and a very enjoyable read.

Characters are extremely stereotypical, no real innovation. Plot dry towards the beginning but got interesting near the end. Ended in a way that makes me believe there should be a second book, but I'm not completely sure their will be (as of yet).
