Orwell Brennan, Dockerty’s chief of police, is partial to classic Motown, autumn sunrises, and most kinds of pie. He dislikes ceremony, squabbling with the Mayor, and being told to stay clear of matters that don’t concern him. A man found in a tree shot dead by an arrow is in the jurisdiction of Metro Homicide. Brennan would be happy to mind his own business — if only the ...more

This mystery is set in Ontario cottage country in the fictional small town of Dockerty. Orwell Brennan is the chief of police and there are threats to close down the local police force and use the OPP instead. When a man is found murdered just outside town near Brennan's home, he uses all the resources he can to stay in the loop on the case. The murder location falls in the OPP's jurisdiction, the victim proves to be from Halton Region and the Metro force steps in to manage things. Brennan wants ...more

Excellent work, even though the shattered chronology gives the reader headaches. I'm not sure it would be as good a story if told chronologically, but who cares, the characters are so interesting that one wants to spend time with them. Chief Brennan is a great man.

The author was one of the writers of the Canadian show, The Beachcombers. This book is the first in the Orwell Brennan series. Unfortunately, the author died in 2012 and so there won't be more than two books in this series. Bummer!

When a hunter is found pinned to a tree with a hunting arrow the first thought is a dreadful hunting accident. But there are 2 arrows... A story of a bank robbery and greed. Who could have done this?

I liked this book a lot -- set in more rural Canada -- a police chief who maintains his own integrity -- a collection of characters who are drawn together into crime and (deserved) retribution --

Edgar award winner! Deservedly so. Strange is not to be missed. This is my 2nd of the four he wrote before his death. I wish there was forty.

Don't know how I ended up with this book but I was pretty pleased with it. I will read more from this author.

Small town murder and mayhem and since it's labelled "an Orwell Brennan mystery," here's hoping there will be more.

Good. Workman-like. Took a long time to reach a conclusion.
