Years of research into the world of wolves combines with mythical tale-telling to present a fantastical adventure set in a world filled with lore. The rules of the Wide Valley wolves were clear: Never consort with humans; never kill a human unprovoked; never allow a mixed-blood wolf to live. But they were rules destined to be broken.

Now, in the second riveting installment...more

“Hearst writes convincingly and engagingly of lupine behavior, and the interactions among wolves and wolfpacks never fail to captivate.” --Publishers Weekly

“A vivid, enchanting tale of friendship, trust and adventure.” --Kirkus, on Promise of the Wolves

“Clearly, Hearst has done prodigious research, and her story is infused with a great depth of understanding...Her lupine cast [is] both captivating and believable...With its engaging blend of animal science and mythology, and a strong environmenta...more

“Secrets of the Wolves” by Dorothy Hearst, published by Simon & Schuster.

Category – Fiction/Literature

This is the second in the trilogy “The Wolf Chronicles”.

Kaala, the young female wolf, has been entrusted with bringing together wolves and humans so that they can live in harmony. However, as we know from the first book, Kaala is being opposed not only by other wolves in the territory but also humans who do not want to see this happen.

Kaala’s has found help in a young Indian girl, TaLi, and...more

Rated 3.5*

The second installment in the “Wolf Chronicles” trilogy by Dorothy Hearst, follows the continuing struggles of a young wolf named Kaala, in her attempt to have wolves work with humans.

Right from the start things change for Kaala as once again it appears as the Great Wolves are withholding information or some are working against her. On top of that she gets some information about here exiled mother, in the form of a request to meet her outside the valley so that she can give here daught...more

My rating: 3.5

I came across Dorothy Hearst's Secrets of the Wolves without having read the previous book in the trilogy, and found a lot to like in this engaging tale that fictionalizes that elusive period in prehistory where the domestication of dogs began.

Hearst tells this story from a wolf's point of view, which is just wonderful. She postulates an active effort on the part of wolves to become 'friends' of humans, while weaving a larger web of conflicting interests, both human and wolfish, a...more

I was able to read this lovely book because I won it through the GoodReads First Reads program. I enjoyed the viewpoint from the wolves. I think the story line is very nice and doesn't drag. I didn't really like that the main wolf character had 3 different names, I liked Kaala but I also understood that it would've affected the story if all the humans had known her name when they couldn't speak ot each other. Kaala is somewhat idealistic and yet she has enough courage and guts to stand up for wh...more

I liked this book a little less than the previous one, but it was still good. The reason I liked it less is a cumulation of little things, not because of anything big. I always get a little annoyed when characters keep secrets and then blame another character later on for not blindly obeying them and thereby ruining the secret-keeper's plans. There was quite a bit of that going on, particularly on the part of the Greatwolves. Also, I didn't like Kaala's submissiveness towards the humans. The hum...more

Secrets of the Wolves by Dorothy Hearst is not worth 10.99$ for Kindle.

The story starts off plodding along and continues from there. Considering how often the wolves are racing here and racing there, it's confusing that the story failed to get anywhere quicker than an amble.

Kaala, the main wolf character, is not particularly likable. Not because she has any bad qualities, but because I don't identify with her very well. She doesn't emote very much, and when she does she changes her moods back to...more

I won this on Goodreads. This is the second book in The Wolf Chronicles, and it is told from Kaala's perspective, who happens to be a wolf. An attempt to bring wolves and humans together, living in harmony, has not worked out in the past, but Kaala finds herself in the position to try, along with the help of a select few wolves as well as Tlitoo, a raven who is more than he seems. But there is a problem. A Greatwolf named Milsindra is out to destroy any hope Kaala has of succeeding as well as vy...more

At first I really liked this book. it had its dry parts, yes, just not bad enough to anger me. What annoyed me was the last two, three pages. She (Hearst) just DRAGGED out the ending. she basically said the same things over and over and over again, rementioning their names constantly in a couple of paragraghs. Really, it would have been a lot more suspenceful and interesting if she had just mentioned Kalla's friends a few times instead of constantly. Oh, well. I didn't write it.

Secrets of the Wolves is a great read for lovers of fantasy and paranormal stories. I read the first book in this series, but the author provides enough background in Book 2 (without being cumbersome) that you can jump on into the series.

The author did a wonderful job portraying the wolves "talking" in the story, but you don't lose the fact that they are wolves. Kaala is a wonderfully flawed character. She's not perfect, but it makes her more endearing. The action picks up in Book 2 and I can't...more

Second in the Wolf Chronicles, I don't think I'll read any more. The story of wolves protecting territory and trying to reveal the secrets of the Great Wolves (Dire Wolves) just doesn't really interest me. The writing is sometimes very slow and I found it really hard to keep any interest in the plot. There is very little sense of place and time, the characters are so thin it's hard to care about them.

Now I am panting with the eagerness of a wolf scenting prey for the next novel in this series!! Will Kaala be able to keep her promise, even though the deck seems stacked against her? What will Tlittoo help her find out in that "in-between" world and the dreams to which he is the key? What of TaLi and BreLan and Azzuen and MArra? WHAT LIES OUTSIDE THE VALLEY AND OUTSIDE THE KEN OF SWIFT RIVER PACK?

I just couldn't put this book down, it's almost five in the morning and I have to be up soon to see my child off to school but it couldn't be helped. I was pissed how it ended and really can't wait for the third book to make it's way to me. Gah, one of the best series I've read ever!

I read an Advance Uncorrected Proof of this novel which is the second in a trilogy dealing with the evolution of wolves and their relationship with humanity. The fantasy element felt stronger and more developed in this book. It leaves me with high expectations for the next installment.

This book was amazing. To describe it the best would be a give away to anyone who hasn't read it and I probably wouldn't have enough room. The short version, this book has the right setting, characters and plot twists that make a book amazing and worth reading.

Fleshing out the mythology of the first in the trilogy, and I enjoyed the characters more. This is a solid recommendation for middle school and high school students, as well as anyone interested in historical fiction set in the prehistoric age or wolf behavior.

I'm really stupid. I read this book first instead of Promise of the Wolves. No wonder I was so confused. Anyways, this was a good book and it reviewed a lot from the previous book. I'd really enjoyed reading this and it had a lot of intense moments.

I really wanted to like this book. I even reread the first in the series before this one arrived. Yet found it boring & confusing like a mythic fairy tale but I couldn't care about the characters enough to finish it.

Oh dear it seems I've inadvertently read the second book first, ah well, it should mean that I'll like the first one too, but it greatly changes my expectations as to what happens next!

I did not care for The Secret of Wolves by Dorothy Hearst. There was too much dialogue between the wolves and to many wolf characters. I was hoping to learn more about wolves.

I LOVED the first installment of this series. I have loved wolves since I can remember and the first book validated every wonderful feeling I had. The problem is that I read the first book about 3 years and 200 books ago. So, getting into this story was slightly difficult for me because I did not remember the supporting characters names (which are not normal) or their relation to the main character. The action and characterization are good, but don't wait too long between the first and this inst...more

Ireally enjoyed this book. I love a good book from an animal perspective and this was an awsome one.

I'm too sad by the ending to write a review. I'll write one later. :*(

I loved this book. I am glad I won it from a goodreads giveaway. I really enjoyed this book. Its a book that I will read time and again. I was drawn to this bookk from the very first page. I highly suggest this book. It was better then the first book, which I also enjoyed.

Could not get into it.

the young wolve is helping a human and that is agianst the wolve law and is trying to hide her scent

This was a laboured read....found it hard to get into...and continue.....

Its only when the last 30 pages picks up in action that i felt any sort of excitement with the story.
And then...a huge cliffhanger!!!....for which we have to wait another year for!!! Not fair Miss Hearst...not fair at all!

Long and laboured...
plots and characters going nowhere much......
I was disappointed in this the 2nd installment....
lets hope the final read will be worth the wait!!!
Vicki
Second installment in the Wolf Chronicles series continues the story of the young wolf, Kaala, and her quest to bring wolves and humans together in the Wide Valley in order to save them all. A little slower than the first one, I was hoping to have the story wrapped up but, alas, it is a trilogy. Still compelling, with lots of questions unanswered and a cliff hanger ending. This book is in adult, but the series would do well for YA's and even stronger grade 6 readers who love the genre
