An Eagle Named Freedom is the self told story of Jeff Guidry who works at a wildlife rehabilitation facility outside Seattle. While working there he encounters Freedom, a bald Eagle chick with a broken wing. She is unreleasable and Mr. Guidry forms a bond with her. Mr. Guidry develops lymphoma and his intense bond with Freedom is a source of inspiration to him during his recovery. This is the heart of the book and Mr. Guidry fleshes it out with some stories of other animals he interacts with at...more
Jeff writes an interesting account of partially his life, but mostly his work with injured animals, being an avid animal lover this speaks to me. Freedom is a bald Eagle who is found hurt, and Jeff works with him in recovery, off course in doing so he becomes very attached to this majestic bird,

This book has gotten alot of publicity, which is probably the only reason I read it. I had a feeling I wouldn't like it before I ever started it, and I was right. It is a nice enough story on the surface: man bonds with eagle, and survives cancer. However, since that wouldn't exactly lend itself to a 200 page book, they had to throw in so much anthropomorphic nonsense that I found myself rolling my eyes after most pages. I wish the author could have just let Freedom express herself as an eagle w...more
Rock musician Jeff Guidry's memoir, "An Eagle Called Freedom," is a heartwarming and, at times, heartbreaking tale of his work at the Sarvey Wildlife Conservation Center.
Guidry develops a special relationship with Freedom, an eagle whose wings are broken so badly that she is unable to fly once they heal. He cares for her on a regular basis and they develop a mutual respect and understanding. Guidry credits Freedom, in part, for him overcoming cancer as she gave him something to live for -- the h...more

This is the very interesting story of an eagle, Sarvey Wildlife Care Center near Seattle and the author who is a volunteer at the center. Sarvey Wildlife Care Center is a wildlife rehabilitation center which works at re-establishing injured and ill animals to their natural setting. They seem to do an amazing job and take every precaution to insure that the animal retains its wildness.
On some occasions, as with Freedom, the animal is too injured or too tame to return to the wild and they will con...more

One of the classic examples of man and the wild bonding, An Eagle Named Freedom is wondrously inspiring and will touch any animal-lovers' heart. It's the story of the author himself - Jeff Guidry, on his connection with a near-death eagle he finds while volunteering at a wildlife center. From that point on, the newly named eagle Freedom, and Guidry deepen there bond transcending the boundaries of man and nature. Just as Guidry helped Freedom recover from death, Freedom was there to support Guid...more

I loved this book. It was a story about survival. Freedom, the eagle had fallen off its nest when still a young eaglet. The unfortunate fall harmed his wing in such a way that he would never be able to fly. The bird was fortunate enough to be placed in Sarvey Wild Life Center where he was rehabilitated. Jeff Guidry, a volunteer at the center became the eagle's "wings" and helped rehabilitate Freedom. When Jeff was diagnosed with cancer, Freedom repaid in kind.

A fabulous story that reads a bit like Marley and me, but Freedom (the eagle) does not die at the end!
It's sometimes funny -- the antics of this eagle and other animals at Sarvey Wildlife Care Center are a riot -- it's also sometimes sad -- the abuse some of these animals have suffered, the challenges faced by the people and animals in this book, but most importantly, it's inspiring -- the friendship and trust between Freedom and Jeff Guidry is unbelievable.

In his educational programs with the eagle and in the afterword to the book, Guidry mentions that a great deal of effort went into the writing of his story. Effort in the writing makes for an effortless read. It's not fancy storytelling, but stays true to the writer's straightforward style and worldview. Guidry does justice to his touching experience of rescuing the eagle "Freedom" and his own journey of recovery from cancer. The book makes a strong case for the good work being done at Arlington...more

An Eagle Named Freedom is a true story about a man's remarkable relationship with an eagle; but more than that, it is a glorious story about life, the will to live, and living in a meaningful manner. [return][return]The narrator, Jeff, becomes interested in wildlife and eagles in particular, and begins working at a sanctuary for "wild ones" that have been injured. He is able to form relationships with some special wild animals - a mountain lion, bears, a squirrel, and raptors including Freedom,...more

An Eagle Named Freedom is Jeff Guidry's heartwarming, and often heartbreaking, 10-year memoir of his incredible life and bond with a Pacific Northwest American Bald Eagle named Freedom. In 1998 while Jeff is volunteering at Sarvey Wildlife Care Center in Washington State, a female baby eagle is brought in with two broken wings and is severely emaciated. She is only 3 feet tall, and weighs just 10 pounds. Jeff and coworker Kaye Baxter transfer the hurt bird to a veterinary clinic where they set a...more
This memoir is a plainly written account of a man and his relationship with a rescued eagle. The central message is one of mutual healing through the special relationships humans can forge with our animal brethren, combined with conservation of land and wildlife, and respect for the wild.
This book is well, and simply written, but slightly disorienting as it flips back and forth from the author's illness, Freedom's struggles, and various volunteers and animals at the rescue center. It will be ap...more

He's never afraid to say what he thinks animals are thinking. When I first found the book I thought it would be mostly about his eagle. He and his wife share their home with a pet squirrel who gets up to all kinds of funny things. Many other animals such as bears are also involved. I was slightly irritated by the way he often will say wild ones instead of wild animals. Throughout the book, I could really tell he deeply cares about the welfare of animals.
I thought the story was great! I have always been partial to wildlife. It is interesting to watch the bond that builds between the author and Freedom. The side stories of the other animals that came to the wildlife rehab center and impacted the author enough to write about them adds a great deal to the book. I liked it enough that I bought about 15 paperback copies and gave them to people I know.
I wanted to read about birds, dude, not your New Age wooish nonsense. TEH EEEGLE FLIED THROUGH MAI VEEEEEEINS IMPARTING TEH SPIRITUAL HEEEELINGGGGGGS ugh. I'm glad you survived, and I'm glad you found a meaningful friendship with a bald eagle, but hoo boy the woo is strong with this one.
Worth a single read-through for some bird stuff and a laugh.

This is a great book to read. It's the story of the friendship between an injured eagle and her handler at a wildlife rehab center in the Northwest. The book also has lots of info on other animals and the remarkable experiences their human caretakers have with them. If you are an animal lover, you will enjoy this book.
I don't know what catagory this really falls into. I would call it "feel good, animal touched my soul" book. Jeff Guidry is a bird lover, enjoying each time he sees one flying high in the air. He offers his time at a animal rescue area. He tells of how he saves raccoons, bears, and most importantly, an eagle. It is clearly an animal lover book!
I didn't find this book as inspirational as I had hoped nor as informative as I had expected. However, it's not a bad book and definitely has an audience. I guess I'm not quite it. For more:

This book is amazing! I love the relationship between Freedom and Guidry. It is a book about "wild ones' and how they live in our tough world. I was tearful at times and giggling at times. Jeff takes you through his battle with cancer and the loss of friends. His message is to let nature be and live in harmony which is not often done is this fast paced world of technology. Thank you Jeff and Freedom!
An inspiring story - told in a straight-forward and journalistic manner - of an eagle who bonded with her rehabilitator and, in so doing, helped him through his life-threatening battle with cancer.
I laughed, cried, held my breath and thoroughly enjoyed parts of this book. At other times, I was frustrated - I felt when the author mentioned other animals, their stories should have been told with more detail and depth. I felt as if the stories were written just to add more words to the book and my...more

I loved reading about the animal behavior and happenings at Sarvey, but I was a little skeptical about Mr. Guidry's dramatic encounters. I just wonder at how much embellishment there was to create spirit in the story. No matter what, I do not regret taking the time to read the book, and I wish Mr. Guidry and the SWCC the absolute best.
