This dark and gritty tale of a San Francisco private investigator hunted ruthlessly by his former employers is recounted in a spare, terse manner that is well done in its way but failed to grab me. While I was curious enough to read to the end (it is short), I find myself much more interested in pondering why it left me relatively unmoved.

It's not that I dislike noir; I've always liked Raymond Chandler. Nor do I have to like a book's protagonist, although that usually helps. The protagonist of t

PROTAGONIST: Dante Mancuso, PI
SETTING: San Francisco
SERIES: #4 of 4
RATING: 4.25

Dante Mancuso is one of the more complex characters in crime fiction, which is what makes the 4-book series in which he is the lead such an interesting reading experience. Currently, he is working as a private investigator. In the past, he worked for a secretive corporate security firm (“The Company”) and had been a cop. He’s an amalgamation of these three types. As a former cop, he has insider knowledge on how they w

Like most of the noirish crime fiction I've ever read, this one oozes with atmosphere, this time set in North Beach around San Francisco. But atmosphere is about mood, including the reader's mood, and mine just wasn't a downbeat one. I'd just marveled at 33 copper miners entombed a half-mile under the earth escape and see daylight for the first time in 69 days. I admire NAKED MOON's power: its insistent pace, its sturdy prose, and its well-etched characters. But some light has to seep through th ...more

This was very similar to the first book in the series, Chasing the Dragon. There was a feeling of doom hanging over the whole book, that there are forces you can't control which will triumph in the end.

Modern noir. Dante Mancuso is a San Fransisco PI with a history of working for some unnamed quasi governmental agency engaged in unnamed but obviously slimy acts. Having escaped that agency thru blackmail, Dante is pulled back into its orbit when they threaten his cousin and other love ones.

While I like noir in movies, I am not a big fan in books--this book is fast paced, and an easy read, but I just did not like it--my spouse, who is more into the hard boiled mystery genre than I am, thought it was good. Dante is not the guy for me--and Cicero is killed...oh well.

I had no problem escaping via this crime story set in the crumbling neighborhood of Italian North Beach, SF. I particularly enjoyed noting my familiarity with the various landmarks in this dark underworld described by Dante Mancuso.
