Can a person come-of-age in one evening? Why yes, yes they can, if they are Kurt Vonnegut's King & Queen of the Universe.
This is a short story, maybe 10 or so Kindle pages (not including the intro), but it's packed with suspense. There's also sorrow as we follow two privileged teens leaving behind the last night of their childhood.
Haven't read this author before? I recommend you start here. I loved it.

Yes ! Another Vonnegut... This story is so different that I just loved it ! I have always enjoyed Vonnegut, but some of his early pieces are unusual and provocative... like this one !
