This is one of my most prized possessions from childhood, although I don't know how such heartbreaking stories were deemed designed especially for children. I mean, in what universe is "the Little Girl with the Matchsticks" a children's story? What would be the moral? Anyway, Hans Christian Andersen may have set out to write with the primary goal of giving little kids something to be really really sad about but I do love this book and especially the illustrations in my edition.

This book, particularly the story of 'The Nightingale' and 'The Little Mermaid', stuck with me from such a young age that a couple years ago I hunted down this exact version for the distinct purpose of purchasing it for my children.

It's wonderfully delightful and each story was simply told for a child to understand, yet the themes adult enough for a mother to still cherish. And the artwork within was beautiful.
