Pretty hot book and a decent story to boot. Beth Kery has written some of my favorite books in the past few years (Wicked Burn, Daring Time, Release), and while Explosive doesn't quite reach the caliber of my favorite, "Daring Time", it's still a very entertaining read.

Looks like I'm in the minority of not liking this book. There are a lot of 4-5 star reviews/ratings, but I feel like I'm being generous if I give this 2.5 stars. I just got very bored reading this book and couldn't get into the story at all.

Looks like I'm in the minority of not liking this book. There are a lot of 4-5 star reviews/ratings, but I feel like I'm being generous if I give this 2.5 stars. I just got very bored reading this book and couldn't get into the story at all.

Summary:
Sophie Gable is a doctor who has developed a crush on the brother of one of her associates patients. The two have been dancing around each other for a while, but Thomas Nicasio is going through a tough time with the recent deaths of his brother and nephew. Then, Thomas shows up at her vacation cabin one night, acting very strange. They share a passionate night but the next morning, Thomas is gone and later remembers nothing of their encounter.

Sophie knows something is very wrong with Thomas. He's showing all the signs of PTSD and head trauma. But she's wary of how to handle the situation, given the danger that is arising because of an FBI investigation into his adopted father. Plus, every time the two are around each other, passion ignites. But Thomas and Sophie find their lives in danger and she must figure out what memories Thomas is blocking before it's too late.

Review:
I had moderately high hopes for this book. I enjoy erotic romance and I love romantic suspense, so when I book looks to be both, I'm a happy camper. But this book fell way short of my expectations.

The beginning of the book is a bit confusing. It seemed like the author was trying to be a bit nebulous and mysterious in the way she wrote it - with the timing, the events - but I ended up kinda confused over what really happened and when. Thankfully, that issue smooths out not too far into the book.

But then the biggest problem of the book arises: way too much sex! And yeah, I know, this is an erotic romance. Still, I prefer decent story and character development with my hot sex, thank you very much. And I didn't get that at all with this story. There are times when it seems like you're just reading wall to wall sex. It got very boring. Every time you think the plot of the book is about to pick up, get dug deeper into, you instead get more sex. And then some more sex on top of that. I think about halfway through I started to skim somewhat, and then by the end, I was practically skipping scenes.

I wanted more character development, more of the plot. Not wall to wall sex. Maybe I'm the only one who thought that way since this book has so many good ratings, but that's the way I felt about it. There was a lot of potential for this story, but it doesn't deliver. At least for me. Other authors handle erotic romantic suspense much better - Jaci Burton comes to mind. I'm not sure Beth Kery is an author I'll read again.

My first Kery book. I had read reviews, which was good, because I then knew what to expect. I agree with everyone who says the beginning was confusing with the back and forth in the story timeline. I was surprised, however, by how good the mystery / suspense subplot; I really thought it was great! What I like first about this story is the mystery of it all. The mystery of why Thomas shows up on Sophie’s dock one night, disheveled and out of sorts. They don’t know each other well, having glimpses of each other when Thomas and his brother are in Sophie’s office the times Rick sees a therapist. They’re attracted to one another but have never acted on that attraction. So finding him at her lakeside vacation home is something of a shock for Sophie. The sexual tension is fierce and blasts off the page. Sophie offers him sanctuary for the night, stepping back from what could be between them. But when Thomas seeks her out later, they combust. A huge conflagration. Explosive.

Sophie is aware of the FBI investigation of the claims that Thomas’ adoptive father is the head of an organized crime unit in Chicago. Thomas’ brother and nephew have just died in a freak boating accident. And when the FBI shows up the next day to question Thomas, more stress is heaped on the man and his family. But when Thomas comes to her office after the agents leave and they make love again, Sophie realizes Thomas is suffering a sort of post-traumatic syndrome where he doesn’t remember a specific block of time in the last day. She wants to help him, so she invites him back to the lake to rest and recuperate.

And this is where Ms. Kery really turns up the heat. A few days is all that is covered for the majority of the book, and the sex these two share during this time makes the reader combust. Thomas thinks he’s changed, not realizing the trauma he’s suffering. The times he’s rough when loving Sophie makes him feel the need to apologize for being a beast with her. A girl should be so lucky to have such a beast, let me tell you. And Sophie knows that. She’s just as voracious for Thomas as he is for her, and she’s more than willing to give herself to him in any way he wants.

In between the loving making, Sophie does try to pull information out of Thomas to get to the crux of his issues, but he’s having none of it. Thomas begins to doubt Sophie and her kindness when things don’t add up for him anymore. But I like that despite all of that, he can’t stay away from her. He thinks it’s because of this change in himself when it’s truly just because he’s found the right woman but doesn’t realize it because of all the chaos in his life.

There aren’t many clues, that I caught anyway, to let us know what’s going to happen at the end. Thomas loyally defends his father against all accusations, Sophie raises questions that should give Thomas pause. It’s not until Thomas’ memory returns in a flash of fear for Sophie that we, and Thomas, get the truth. And evil doesn’t have anything on the villain in this book.

A smoldering, sexy hero with a strong, willing heroine, both trying to get at some mysterious truth, make this erotic story come alive. You won’t want to miss this erotic romance. It’s……explosive!(less)

Sophie takes a few weeks off to spend time at her parents’ lake cottage in central Illinois. To her surprise Tom shows up at her door. He has a bruise on his head. He desperately needs to have sex with her – she is willing. He leaves the next morning. She follows him back to Chicago to try to figure out what is going on. She realizes he has amnesia and doesn’t remember going to her lake cottage. An FBI agent sees Sophie with Tom and tells her that Tom is in danger. Sophie asks Tom to come to her lake cottage for a few days. She wants to help him with his amnesia, plus she is falling for him.

There have been some murders of people close to Tom, and he may be next. His amnesia isn’t helping. But during this time, he has an insatiable need for sex with Sophie. And there is lots of it. It’s explicit and includes rear door activity, sex toys, light bondage, and mild spanking.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
Tom desperately hungers for Sophie in all ways, and she’s happy to comply. The sex scenes were hot. I actually found myself with goose bumps a couple of times which surprised me. I wasn’t sure whether it was the book or the room temperature (probably the book). Don’t expect any relationship development which would have been nice.

An undercurrent is Tom’s amnesia, causing him to be distant. Tom hears Sophie talking on the phone about him. She’s getting advice from her psychologist friend. She doesn’t tell this to Tom and she doesn’t tell him about his amnesia because it may hurt rather than help his coming out of it. Therefore Tom is suspicious which creates some conflict/tension between the couple, which was ok.

The suspense part of the story relates to murder and Tom’s adopted father being investigated for organized crime activities. This is a minor part of the story and happens mostly at the end of the book. It was not typical romantic suspense which has bad guys interacting with good guys throughout the book. But the suspense part was good. The ending was very nice. My favorite Beth Kery books are Daring Time and Release, but this is worthwhile if you like her style.

The title of the book touches several things including Tom’s past work in the NAVY and a warehouse explosion. But I see it mostly relating to explosive sex, explosive relationships in Tom’s past, and Tom’s current temperament.

The mystery, suspense, and SMOKIN-HOT sex made this book a very delicious read.

Thomas was a dominant, sexy, possessive amnesiac looking for answers and safe harbor at Sophie’s door. Already being acquainted with and attracted to Thomas, the compassionate Sophie takes him in and tries to help him put together the pieces of his broken memory. The intensity of his need for Sophie was so powerful it was almost overwhelming. I absolutely loved the two of them together.

Thomas was instantly likeable, especially as his vulnerable side is what we first see - after that, we like Sophie know him better than he realises. The plot is simple enough but with an edge that adds tension and suspense; still, the truth about Thomas's adoptive father and the death of his brother, while interesting, is not the point of the story. I like it when plot doesn't get in the way of character development and growing chemistry - these two explode off the page right from the beginning, but their emotional chemistry builds slower and is more satisfying for it.(less)

I'm not a huge fan of contemporary romance and yet for some reason I keep coming back and reading them. Although the beginning of this book left me twitching a bit and looking around in confusion, I ultimately liked it. Most of the confusion stemmed from Thomas' state of mind when Sophie encounters him at her lake house. Tom desperately wants Sophie in so many different ways and lucky for him Sophie is more than happy to comply. The sex scenes were so hot I was wondering if I was panting and drooling. I actually could not put this little hot read down. I loved how Tom and Sophie got together, after the weeks of being attracted together and they just didn't jump into bed together. The suspense part of the story relates to murder and Tom’s adopted father being investigated for organized crime activities. I was dying to know who the murderer was and if his father was in fact involved in these activities.

I loved Tom!! I felt for him loosing some important people in his life and loved the way Sophie was trying to help him move past it. Tom was a pure Alpha male and loved every minute of it. I was relieved when Sophie took a liking to it as well. I mean who doesn't like a take charge kinda man?

Explosive was the perfect title for this fantastic read. Not only did it have some explosions but had tons of explosive sex. This is a well-written book that's loaded with some intensely steamy pages, as well as an element of suspense. An entertaining read. If you like a sexy as hell hero who will save the day, you'll love Tom as much as I did. *swoons* Thomas and Sophie, two people who both felt like they never really belonged in their families found everything they needed in each others arms.

I can't wait to read more from Beth Kery, she always knows how to get you interested and you keep you on the edge of your seat.

I just don't know what to say about this.... I was kind of excited to read it given the reviews, but there was so much information in the first 50 pages that I honestly had no clue what was going on. Apart from a strange guy coming to Sophie's house, having sex with her and then leaving! Hmmmm...

The 'ender' for me was this sentence, "He saw her dark brown eyes widen when she saw his strange reaction to seeing her." I read it 8 times before I got what it should say.

Suspenseful, betrayal, love... very good. Nothing was predictable, everything was very solid and just made you want to read more and more so you could get to the bottom of it. Sophie and Thomas made a great couple and the fact that he trusted and protected her at the same time and inadvertently was very sweet. The way she kept desperately trying to help him because the idea of him hurt made her hurt spoke volumes even before she admitted to herself her feeling for him.

Dr. Sophie Gable is so looking forward to a month of rest and relaxation at her secluded lake house. Nothing to do but decompress, swim, read and relax. AHHHHH sounds like heaven! So nothing could prepare her for the shock of finding an acquaintance from work Thomas Nicasio on her dock the first night of her vacation. What?

Sophie and Thomas know each other in a “Hi. How you doing” polite greeting kind of way since they both worked in the same office building and the are “aware” of each other. Sophie knows immediately that Thomas is out of sorts and is acting very strange indeed but she doesn‘t want to make a wrong move or push too hard. So she's pretty surprised by what happens next since it’s so totally out of character for her when they fall into bed together and have mind-blowing sex. And I guess it really did blow Thomas’ mind since he can’t remember it the next day. That’s got to be a little hard on a girl’s ego?

Sophie’s right. Thomas isn’t acting normal. In fact he’s suffering from traumatic amnesia after several events in a row have sent him over the deep end - the death of his adopted brother and nephew, his adopted father is being accused of being a mob boss - something Thomas absolutely refuses to believe and it’s all just too much. He’s a mess the night he shows up at Sophie’s lake house but one thing’s for sure - he’s got a powerful, inexplicable sexual hunger for Dr Sophie Gable - Explosive!

It almost seemed like Sophie was Thomas’ lifeline, his only salvation to keep whatever memories he was repressing so he didn't completely splinter apart. He was like a live wire, on edge, ready to crack at any moment. Sex with Sophie seemed to be the only way to keep him marginally sane. So they have lots and lots of sex. Ms. Kery knows how to write steamy, erotic romance, explosive sexual encounters, but even I may have thought there was too much focus on the sex. The story was good enough and Sophie was a professional woman, I felt she was above just being used by Thomas for sex for whatever was wrong with him especially when their actions took a turn that I felt was totally out of character for Sophie.

I don’t think there was any mystery where this story was headed, but I was hooked wondering what would happen when Thomas regained his memory and how he would deal with the fallout and what it would mean for his and Sophie’s relationship.

The suspense story in Explosive was actually pretty interesting and when Thomas finally does regain his memories - well it was explosive!

Sophie knows something horrible has happened to Thomas, but what? She has her suspicions and is very worried about the man who turns up on the dock of her summer retreat, obviously traumatized. She has previously only had a passing flirtatious acquaintance with Thomas, so why has he sought her out at Haven Lake? Then there is Thomas’ explosive sexual need for Sophie which Ms. Kery deftly depicts in scenes describing their passionate encounters throughout the narrative. Lastly there is a suspense subplot that involves murder and an FBI investigation into the mechanizations of the ‘Outfit’ a Chicago crime organization.

Dr. Sophie Gable is a well respected specialist who works in a group practice in the same building that houses the office of Thomas Nicasio a reputable businessperson. Thomas’ brother Rick Carlisle was seeing a psychologist who is Sophie’s friend and colleague. She would often see Thomas on Wednesday nights waiting for his brother. I think it is safe to say, that Sophie has been infatuated with Thomas but never acted on the attraction.

“Thomas liked women, and they typically liked him. He was experienced enough to know that Sophie Gable was very aware of him, as well; knew instinctively she returned his interest.

But he’d always shied away from her, wary of her clean scent, girl-next-door glow . . . an appeal like body-warmed, sex-mussed sheets on a sunny bed. He was too complicated for Sophie Gable. Too dark. He’d get her dirty; mess her up. It amazed him to know he’d actually avoided her to protect her as much as himself."

In Thomas Nicasio, Ms. Kery developed a complex, very strong, appealing alpha hero who is accustomed to being in control. He has lost two of the people closest to him on earth and is grieving this loss. In addition, the FBI is investigating his father’s involvement with the Outfit. As Thomas’ life and emotions spiral out of control he reaches out to Sophie, who responds not as a physician would to an ill patient, but to his need for her as a lover. Thomas doesn’t understand his desire to consume Sophie, he just knows it is insatiable, and making love to her is the only way he can quench the fire burning him from the inside out.

“He pressed his forehead to her temple, wanting the small contact with her while his body recovered from the raging storm. He wanted to hold her, but his heart and lungs demanded their due, paralyzing him for a moment.”

There are a number of plot twists and surprises in “Explosive”. While yes, it is an emotional, erotic love story about two people who are perfectly suited for a variety of reasons, it also offers nail biting suspense involving murder and subterfuge, as well as an action packed conclusion. I loved the main setting for "Explosive", beautiful, peaceful Haven Lake and Sophie's rustic cottage. If you enjoy an emotional, erotic romantic-suspense story, that will draw you into a web of intrigue and danger, you may like to give “Explosive”, a try.

With building’s exploding, FBI agents trailing Thomas, and accusations of family mob ties, Sophie feels he’s in danger and does her best to keep him stationary at her lake house, the setting for the majority of this book. Well, excluding that ridiculously hot scene in the office building, most of the sex in Explosive takes place in and around the lake house property. Beth Kery is a master of sensual, erotic romance, and this story did NOT disappoint. There’s always BDSM, at least for every full-length contemporary I’ve read of hers in recent years, but each story kind of has its own flavor. With Explosive, I’d say this one has the kind of BDSM to satisfy the fans of this particular genre, PLUS the folks that don’t want it too extreme or too hard. Only 1 small quibble - Thomas improvising with use of a kitchen spatula very briefly killed the sexy for me...I couldn’t look at my KitchenAid tools the same for a little while! *g* That aside, the sex is varied, detailed, and hot with even some minor exhibition play thrown in. There’s a reason why I drop everything for Beth Kery’s books - I hope the next release is coming up soon! The wait and anticipation for Explosive, considering my preference for tortured or damaged heros, was KILLER! Happy reading :D(less)

I started reading this last night,and finished it tonight.I couldn't put it down.Loved the characters and the story.It's suspensful but also very steamy!.Some scenes were quite full on. The author sure has some imagination!. Thomas is suffering from a recent trauma which has left him emotionally damaged and his involvement with Sophie becomes more intense.All she wants to do is help him,but she is keeping secrets to protect him, which could interfere with their relationship

This is my 3rd Beth Kery endeavor. So far, I liked 'Exposed to You' the best. But this one wasn't bad either.

A lake house, lots and lots of sex, amnesia, Guy Fawkes....erm fox, and Chicago mobsters! What's not to love?

I wish the author had spent some more time on Sophie's background story, as clearly she has some family issues as well. Also the ending felt rushed, everything happened almost simultaneously.

Nonetheless, good for a quick time passin' read.

This erotic story started with a nice mix of intrigue and steamy sex but midway the plot stalled and I started skimming as the hot sex continued and it did have a good finish. Dr Sophie is beginning a month long vacation at her lake house when traumatized Thomas shows up at the door.

This was an interesting book. On the one hand, holy crap there was a lot of sex. But on the other hand, there was this sort of mystery that was woven well. Would he ever remember their first night? Why was he blocking it out? My goodness, they have such a strong, almost animalistic, attraction to each other. They couldn't get enough of each other, which was good for someone who likes to read about people having sex, lol. But wow, there was a LOT of that. And the climax of the mystery was pretty...more

Very good story, with a little mystery & plenty of steamy scenes. I really liked it, my kind of book because as much as I like the sex & romance, it's nice to actually have a story too. Plus then when people ask what I'm reading I can say, "oh some mystery about a guy with PTSD, who's a potential witness against the Mob who falls in love with a doctor... Blah blah blah" instead of "oh just some trashy soft porn" ;)

Really enjoyed this. A very well done erotic romantic suspense. The love scenes were not gratuitous/repetious at all but tied to characterization and the development of the relationship (and to a lesser degree, the plot). But wished there was a bit more plot and a little less sex. In fact I put the book aside for a couple of weeks because of this very reason. But when i picked it up again I devoured the rest of the book.
