An ideal book for the railway enthusiast (which I am not particularly but I have a general interest in steam trains) but it still makes for interesting and enlightening reading to the general reader.

Journey times in Victorian days are compared with those of 1901 and there are some fascinating gradient illustrations of various trips from, for example, London to Bristol and Shrewsbury to Birkenhead.

Trains were averaging around 50 miles per hour in those days but could, with a following wind and go
