I had never listened to this classical piece until I read this book, which came with a CD. Jack Prelutsky wrote poems to accompany all the animals portrayed in Camille Saint-Saens' classical piece, "The Carnival of the Animals". On the CD he reads the poems followed by the music that describes each animal, and then the entire composition is played without the poems. Mary Lee Hahn reviewed Carnival of the Animals at a Year of Reading. She sold me with this: "this music and these poems together, make the music more fun to listen to and the poems more fun to hear and say. What a great way to introduce children to the sounds of language along with the sounds of the orchestra."

In 1886, Saint-Saëns composed The Carnival of the Animals. Fast forward 124 years. Jack Prelutsky has added poems and Mary GrandPré has added illustrations to create this lovely tribute to Saint-Saëns' original composition. Complete with audio CD, it is a worthy tribute.

This is a delightful book full of animal poems set to the music of Camille Saint-Seans’s “The Carnival of the Animals” composed in 1886. Children are introduced to classical music in a fun way and can enjoy acting out the different animal roles in each of Jack Prelutsky’s poems.
The Note to Parents and Teachers at the back says it all about how this book will make this music all the more accessable to children. I love the Jack Prelutsky verses and the Mary GrandPre illustrations. This book is not just for music teachers, but every music teacher should have it.
This is a neat book to add to the collection. I think this will be a great one to recommend to teachers when they are looking for animal books because the classical music and the poetry are a neat combination.
A charming book of poems with a CD in back. The book includes information about how to connect literature and music. The CD with music and poetry reading adds to the enjoyment of the poems and the music.
Hits-- Mary GrandPre's fanciful illustrations, the accompanying CD, sophisticated vocabulary. Miss-- random poems like "Pianists" and "Fossils" don't seem to match the theme.

This is a book of poetry and music. I would help students to connect literature and music. It has beautiful and colorful illustration of all types of animals. I would like to use this book for science and literature lesson plan. Grade: K-3.
This is a GREAT book! Beautiful artwork, excellent poems and music too. Would make a very nice gift!
Accompanied by CD of music & verses. Music is good, but the reading is pretty dull.

Jack Prelutsky is an American poet. He attended New York public schools, and later the High School of Music and Art and Hunter College.
