We visit the second in the Eve Duncan mystery series written by former romance novelist Iris Johansen. There are changes a plenty in Eve's life, from meeting a little girl as tough as Eve was herself to Joe changing his relationship from simply best friend to romantic interest.
Iris hasn't turned her back on her roots as she moves to mystery and mainstream suspense, thank heavens. I'm new to this series, but not to the author. I've read her since her early Loveswept days and thought she and Kay H...more

*This is book 2 in the Eve Duncan Series*
If you like quick paced thriller novels you will love this one! Eve Duncan is a very strong-willed, independent woman that has a very haunting past. She spends much of her time reconstructing faces onto skulls to identify the remains, she is one of the top forensic sculptors. Her daughter was murdered, her body never found. Eve is on a mission to find her little girl while along the way falling into a world of chaos.

This book is awful. I mean really, the writing stinks. The first line is: The skeleton had been in the ground for a long time. Joe Quinn had seen enough of them to recognize that.
Well, duh. It's a freakin skeleton. Of course it's been in the ground a long time. You don't just become a skeleton overnight. Otherwise it would be a decomposing body or someone who'd recently been buried alive. And there must be plenty of skeletons in the closet where Joe Quinn lives. Because he seems to know an awfu...more

A quantum leap over its predecessor, The Face of Deception. It starts with the same characters, along with a setup that isn't very believable. But once Johansen starts the action rolling, you don't care about how ridiculous the setup is. What makes The Killing Game so much better than its predecessor is that Johansen makes both the characters and their relationships three-dimensional. The big relief is the substitution of a live child for the pile of bones Ever Duncan obsessed over ad nauseam in...more
This is #2 in the Eve Duncan series. Eve is a forensic facial reconstruction. I read the first book which introduced Eve, Logan and Joe. This story is about Eve hiring a cadaver search team (Sarah and Monty, the dog) to search for a body that she was told about from Dom, who is stalking her.
Dom wants Eve to get closer to Jane, who he thinks is like her and to represent Bonnie her deceased child. Dom likes to toy with Eve a bit and tries to get under her skin. Joe is also in the story as his typ...more

I tried a different mystery author but don't think I would bother with any more of Johansen's stuff. The story itself was pretty good - facial reconstruction artist is still searching for her daughter who was killed by a serial killer (who has confessed and was executed), but then a new serial killer comes into her life through another murder, and she must face the fact that the new serial killer is the real murder of her daughter.

This is book 2 in the Eve Duncan series. This time the killer was a lot more personal. This book dealt a lot with Eve and her past and of course Bonnie, whereas the first book The Face of Deception was sort of an introduction to the characters.
The Killing Game picks up about a year after the first book. Eve has been with Logan on his island all this time, but the discovery of a little girl's skeleton sends Joe to retrieve her and bring her back to her work. Right away Eve believes the skeleton...more

In this second book of the Eve Duncan series, the protagonist does very little facial reconstruction. Mostly she talks on her phone to a serial killer and takes unnecessary chances with her own and other's lives. (or others take unnecessary chances with their own lives). We first find Eve on a tropical island with John Logan where she has lived and worked for about a year. When remains of a young girl which could be Eve's daughter Bonnie surface (literally) after a storm ravages a remote park ar...more

This novel starts off where the 1st ends with Logan, Eve, and Joe in this love triangle. Or is it a triangle because Eve has no idea anyone is in love with her. As far as she is concerned everyone is just a good "friend". Eve can't handle much more than that, and to be honest, doesn't want to. But this time Joe might have the advantage. He has discovered a set of child's remains that could be Bonnie. As they set off discover the identity of the remains the bones get stolen. The thief, the real k...more

I really enjoyed the first book.
This second installment was both better and worse for me.
I enjoyed the serial killer part of the storyline. That was interesting to follow and I liked Jane.
I enjoyed the fact that Eve wasn't as blind to what was going on with Joe this book.(view spoiler) In the first one I was a bit torn. I'm supposed to believe she's perceptive enough to pick up on Logan's lies,...more

I thought I was so sure on who the killer was in this book.
But as always...when trying to predict a book...I was wrong.
I thought this book was very good.
It even made me cry. Seriously.
Eve Duncan (the main character) finds a cadaver
dog to help search for bones of missing people. And
at one point the dog finds some human remains.
It was really sad to read the dog's reaction.
Seriously. The dog's reaction is so heartbreaking.
I give this book a B+.

I had not read Iris Johansen before and was slightly disappointed by the book. The plot was good, for the most part. It was a quick and relatively suspenseful read. I think she tried too hard to create characters who were psychologically complicated; it was rather awkward to read some of their "deep insight" scenes. It also felt a little emotionally scattered. There was too much random drama involved with the plot. Overall, it was a good book but definitely did not master the best aspects of a g...more

I listened to the audio. The reader is pretty good, although not the best I've ever heard in the men voices dept. That being said, I almost stopped listening to it, it's that scary and disturbing. But I was hooked a few discs in and wanted to finish it and so I compromised and decided not to listen to it at night and especially not before I go to bed. Boy, it's been a long time since I've had this problem with a book!

I actually picked this up out of order, so my first introduction to Eve, Joe and Logan was a little skewed. Nevertheless, I was so intrigued by Eve, her past and her line of work that I went out and bought The Face of Deception, read that, and then re-read this book (it all had to make sense, you know).
I can't say I agree with Eve's attitude towards Joe, or her pig-headedness in some areas, but she so completely fits the mold of "heroine" that Johansen cut that it at least makes sense.

I loved this book so much. I am a huge fan of the Eve Duncan novels. This book is by far one of my favorites....I finally got to read the book where Eve admits her feelings for Joe and Joe stops sitting on the sidelines of Eve's life and demands to have a staring role. There is great excitement in this book and you can't help but feel for Eve as she suffers for her daughter, but you can't help but hurt for the guy who is always there for her no matter what as well. As watching TV the other evening, I realized I was watching the movie of a book I started reading awhile ago (more than half finished). I usually have no problems with reading books out of sequence but in this case not reading the previous book may be the reason I was not thrilled with the story. Characters were not appealing-- too much drama or something. The movie was ok and I will skim read the rest of the book (maybe). The ending did have a twist but wasn't a surprise.
Only my second book by this author as well as the second in the "Eve Duncan" series. Quick & to the point: WOWSA! I am VERY impressed!
I do not give 5 stars lightly & am often hyper-critical even, but I really am enjoying this fast paced, clever, surprising & suspenseful, well written series & characters.
'Nuff said! ☺
Enjoy fellow readers! Cheers,

When I started this book, I thought to myself, it was really fucked up and missed up.. She finally got the asshole and killed him.. She is so good at kids, and she finally fell in love with this man name Joe Quinn.. He has a ego side, but when Dom started the game Eve finished it.. It is a really good book you have to sit and read to understand of what is happening and going on.. A FBI was a killer, and you have to read it to fine out

I'm an avid reader... and when I find an author I love to read, I find everything they've written and get seriously hooked on their work (when they are really great!)
Iris Johansen is definitely one of my favorites! I've collected all of her books because I just love reading them.
Great character development, and her books will often connect characters between books, although each story is independent of the other.

Others have mentioned the implausibility of Eve even being allowed to be involved in these cases. I agree but that doesn't actually bother me too much. What bothers me is that the police keep covering for her when she commits really terrible crimes, such as kidnapping. In a lot of books the police overlook some slight criminal activities when the hero saves the day but kidnapping? I kept getting stuck on that.
Serial murderer in a previous book claims to have murdered Eve's only child. Another serial killer turns up again in Eve Duncan’s life in attempts of haunting her even more. Claiming not to be as ignorant as the past copycat serial murderer he creates a game that has Eve running in every turn to stop his victims becoming next which would have been she also. She knows she may not survive.
Way too many unrealistic decisions and scenarios in this one, and not much time spent exploring Eve's forensic reconstruction skills which is what attracted me to the series in the first place. I'll probably keep reading to see where the on-going plot threads lead and the author does present great plot twists, but I'm skimming more just to get through the ridiculous parts.
Eve Duncan is back. And this time, she's the hunted one.
I'm quite disappointed with this book, to be honest. Too much... drama. And I think Eve just got more boring. While Joe Quinn is one overprotective, coddling and irritating guy.
I enjoy the chase, the action, the puzzle, the surprise towards the end. Everything else is just somewhat crappy and sloppy. The first book is much better.

I really enjoyed this second book in the Eve Duncan series. Although the first book wasn't my favorite, I really see it as a necessary read for anyone thinking of reading "the killing game.
The plot of this book was very suspenseful. I couldn't see what would happen next without turning a page, which is always refreshing. Also, the plot while intriguing was not far fetched.

I went back and forth between whether I liked this one more than the last Iris Johansen novel I read. As I read it, I didn't think I did. When I finished, I had to admit that I was a little more blown away by the big twist in this one than I was in the big twist of the last one.
Damn you, Iris Johansen! Damn you and your plot twists that I can't see coming!
This one is a must read for fans of this genre.

The killling game was an amazing book. I read it along time ago and i plan to read it again some day. it sucked me right in and i could not put it down. It shocked me to find out who the killer was in the end. i couldnt belive what i read at all. It made me think and i enjoy that in a book. I thought it was so many people but never the one that made sence. When i found out i litterly had to run up to someone and tell them i was so mad that it wasnt the one i thought. Johansen began writing after her children left home for college. She first achieved success in the early 1980s writing category romances. In 1991, Johansen began writing suspense historical romance novels, starting with the publication of The Wind Dancer. In 1996 Johansen switched genres, turning to crime fiction, with which she has had great success. She had seventeen consecutive New York Times b...more
