I know that romance novels are considered to be not quite worthy of folks' attention. This despite the fact that more than 50% of paperbacks purchased are romance novels. It doesn't matter that 13% of all books bought in 2009 were romances. It doesn't matter that the only books on the bestseller list that beat romance fiction are movie tie-in books. Many people from my mom to even some romance readers do not treat these books with respect. And I will admit that I am unlikely to recommend any boo...more
I was sort of surprised that this book was revolved around Kevin as he got married in the last book. I thought there was something off with his quickie marriage and Georgia was odd and didn’t really seem to fit in with the O’Brians.
I hated that Kevin had to go through loosing Georgia and hated how he much he was thrown into a black hole, one that even his son couldn’t seem to bring him out of. I hated that he seemed to ignore Davey or put him on the back burner and was glad that the O’Brian clan...more

Another good story from the O'Brien family. We met Kevin in the last book when he came home from his deployment to have a hasty marriage to a woman also serving her deployment with him. Fast forward a couple of years and we find Kevin alone with a son after losing his wife. This is where this story begins. Kevin and Shanna both had baggage that left them not ready to jump into a relationship and reluctant to talk about their pasts. Adding to that children who are mutually coping with loss and th...more

I am really enjoying this series so far. There is so much heart and warmth in these books.
Overall I enjoyed this instalment, but I did find some of the characters very irritating. Shanna should have told Lori where to shove her advice. Who needs a friend like her? I really was getting annoyed at her constant negativity and she was so unsupportive!
The constant overreaction of the O'Brien's in general was a little wearing. When Bree had her little outburst, I was honestly shocked at her bizarre be...more

In all fairness, this is the first book I've read in this series so I wasn't in from the bottom up. This doesn't change the fact that while the characters in this series are pleasant enough, they're all fairly similar to one another, as are the relationships. I can say this, having also read 'Moonlight Cove' and being in the process of reading 'Flowers on Main'. A lot of the dialogue in these books involves family members and friends being inquisitive about each others' relationships to the poin...more
Magic indeed!!! Another hit by Ms. Woods. How can you help but love this series and this family from Chesapeake Shores? The O'Briens are a meddling bunch, they meddle every time they get a chance, but they all just care about each other.
I see fences being mended, new loves blooming and the latest one is Kevin and the newest lady, Shanna. Shanna opens a bookstore/game store in town and Kevin comes upon her shop, only to find more than a book or game! Maybe the love of his life, if he will give hi...more

Enjoyable series despite the books being predictable and almost the same in each book. You still have a meddling family, momma issues, some kind of internal struggle keeping you from committing to someone. You change the name of the leading characters and the difference between whatever this internal struggle is and you have the same concept for each of the books in the series so far. Yet I am still reading even though there is enough forshadowing to already know who Jess and Uncle Thomas will e...more
Hero is a war veteran (medic) whose wife went back to the war, where she was killed, leaving him home to care for their toddler son. The story begins a year or so later, when his family decides it's time to get him out of his gloom and moving again. He has a really annoying, meddlesome family.
Heroine is the owner of the new bookstore next door to hero's sister's flower shop. She's divorced, with a stepson she didn't want to leave behind with his rich alcoholic father. Those backstories are only...more

I have read the two previous book of the Chesapeake Shores series by Sheryl Woods, The Inn at Eagle Point and Flowers on Main. I enjoyed both of the books and I was expecting to enjoy Harbor Lights just as much.
But it wasn't meant to be. I found it lacked chemistry between the hero and heroine, the plot seemed to be all over the place, and it really didn't resolve anything. No rotten tomatoes, please. It's just my opinion. I'm really disappointed, I was expecting so much.

I have never read any of Sherryl Woods books before, but I saw "The Inn at Eagle Point", read it, and fell in love with the O'Brien family and Chesapeake Shores. "Flowers on Main" was just as good. And now "Harbor Lights". I absolutely devoured this book. Sherryl Woods makes her characters come alive and someone you can care about. I have to admit that "Harbor Lights" is my favorite, but only because I would love to have a bookstore like Word Games. I only hope Sherryl goes back to Chesapeake Sh...more
These books are a terrific listen (I'm doing the audio versions) on my way too an from work. I only gave 3 stars because it's just a nice romantic tale that you pretty much know will turn out okay. To me 3 stars is average and definitely readable.
Unlike some, I really like the narrator. I wonder, however, why Sherryl Woods uses the word INCREDULOUS (and forms of it) so much. It's actually starting to be predictable and is getting on my nerves. I've got all the books in the series, and will finis...more

This was the first book I read in this series and enjoyed every minute of reading time. It's a refreshing and easy read in this crazy world we live in, right now....a nice escape into a small town where people still care for one another. I'm currently reading "A Chesapeake Shore Christmas" and will then start from Book 1 and read my way through the series. Looking forward to spending some enjoyable hours with the O'Brien clan during these next few rainy months.
Well this is book 3 done in this series. I am determined to complete the whole set before I move on to something else. The biggest beef I have is the repetitiveness ...if we are reading a series there is NO NEED to keep on telling us the background - we know already...just get to the new developments. I realize that the author wants to make sure that the book can also stand alone but honestly it a reader is going to spend time on a series they don't need to constant recap of things past!!! Kevin O'Brien's wife was killed while serving her country leavin gbehind her son and husband. He goes home to see what he can do with his life but is in a funk. Shanna opens a bookstore in his home town and he wanders in and helps her set up. She left a bad marriage and a stepson she adores behind. Both need to deal with the past so they can move forward. Was fun to read!
Another nice story, although sometimes it's nice to read about people who don't have trust funds. Maybe that's why Shanna was a nice change, a relative nobody. The story was nice. It reminded me of several other books I've read, in one way or another. I didn't think Georgia was going to survive the series. Pleasant read in the midst of personal change.
This book about a veteran of the Iraq war whose wife was killed in the war, leaving him with a small son, is a good book, but I found all the angst and hesitation in his relationship with a new love interest over a year later a bit annoying inthat it was explained at great length way after we got the point, over and over again.
First of all I'm a goner for stories with children. And books.
In this one, we have a widowed father with a little one. And a new book shop in the town, with a sweet woman with a past. She left her stepson behind (forced by the father's family) and her heart with the child.
The story is sweet and very touching. Gooood!

This is a fun read. Kevin returns to family with young son after his wife is killed in Iraq. He has big family, lots of interaction, fun, love, spats, compassion and nosiness. He meets a new woman in town. His family approves, his in laws do not. There is friction and misunderstandings, but in the end love conquers all. It is a light hearted read. i checked two more books by the same author today.
This was my first Sherryl Woods novel, and realized it was 3rd in a series. However, it was still easy to catch up on the characters. Two people, both with sad relationships in the past, try to work out a new one together, aided by some well meant, meddling O'Brien relatives. A nice light read for a very busy weekend.
I think the reason i'm giving it a 3 not a 4, is that I read it right after an excellent book for Sidney Sheldon, so I had super high expectations :)
At the beginning the events were going too slow, but after page 150 I'd say things were quite interesting.
it discusses many kinds of relationships; friends, family, and love. It's a warm read.

I don't think I have said this before, but I can't stand the O'Brien sisters. They are completely insenistive about other people's feelings. All they care about is getting up into people's business and finding out what the hell is going on when it doesn't concern them.
I gave the previous two books 3 stars because the sisters weren't as bad in those but its like Woods makes up for it in this one. Kevin and Shanna are caught in the middle of the O'Brien family, Mick included.

With two other careers to her credit before becoming a novelist and four states in which she's lived for extended periods of time, Sherryl Woods has collected friends and memories, along with way too much unnecessary junk.
