I must confess that I expected The Darkroom of Damocles to be a dark and difficult book. The title, the description of the author as “one of the most important Western European authors to emerge from the postwar period”, and that oh so dark cover all suggested that to me.
But I was wrong. This is a terribly readable book, simply, clearly and very well written, and it is very easy to keep turning the pages to see what happens. It’s almost a case of serious literary meets gripping thrill More...

Interessant boek over het verzet in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Er gebeuren allerlei raadselachtige dingen, zonder een zichtbaar doel. De hoofdpersoon ontmoet mensen, moet opdrachten uitvoeren en komt uiteindelijk onterecht in de gevangenis terecht. Na het lezen van dit verhaal blijf je met de vraag hangen hoe dit verhaal nou afloopt, zeer goed open einde.

In het 6° middelbaar gelezen en dit boek is me altijd bijgebleven.
Gaat over de 2° wereldoorlog en over foto's (gemaakt met een Leica) die verloren en zo als het zwaard van damocles boven het hoofd van het hoofdpersonage hangen. Want zonder deze foto kan hij zijn onschuld niet bewijzen.

Door dit boek heb ik een 9 voor mijn Nederlands mondeling gehaald.
Ik vond het een fantastisch verhaal.
Aan het einde weet je nog niet wie de waarheid vertelt en of dorbecke wel echt heeft bestaan.
De waarheid is voor iedereen anders.

Mooi boek met een indrukwekkende symbolische achtergrond. Ik moest dit boek voor mijn studie lezen, en ik heb geen enkele bladzijde met tegenzin gelezen!

A must read for school. A fine example of Dutch writing about WW2 as so many must read books for school are about WW2.

I started this book once before when I was in secondary school. Couldn't get through then, so I thought I'd give it a try again. Same result I'm afraid, I just couldn't get a hold of the story.
After trying several weeks (!), I just gave up. Yesterday I brought it back to the library. Just not written for me, this book.

I'm not too sure what the origin is of the story where the king's servant wants to be king for one day. The king says, OK, and when the servant goes to bed that night, there's a sword hanging over his bed. This symbolism plays a major role in this book ... as I said, I don't know if it originates here or in some Greek myth.

Brilantní dílo psané pro mě velice zvláštním jazykem. Text je velmi strohý a přesto poutavý, děj absurdní a zároveň realistický až je to zarážející. U samotné zápletky člověk nikdy neví, na čem vlastně je, tak mistrně je vše podáno.

One of the best Dutch writers in history. Bizare, fascinating story. Had to read it for my Dutch literature list at high school, but I liked it. Great Dutch literary book. Also for this one, have to reread it soon, it's in my bookcase!

Het boek was oké, best een goed verhaal, maar ik ben het er zeker niet mee eens dat iedereen zegt dat dit zijn allerbeste boek is. Voor mij is dat (tot nu toe) toch echt Nooit Meer Slapen.
