The premise is intriguing -- a young black man investigates a lynching in a southern town in 1918 by passing for white. Based on a true story, the fictional Walter makes presumptions about those he meets, and then deals with the consequences. The characters were well drawn, even if the book dragged at times (especially during Walter's internal dialogue).
