This is my first read by author Julie James, and I absolutely loved it! I devoured this in a single sitting. Something About You has everything I enjoy in a contemporary romance/romantic suspense read.

This was picked for our Smut Monday Club reading and even though I read it before, I wanted to read it with everyone again. I forgot how much I really liked this! Actually after reading this for the second time, I realized I loved it!

This is a simple, drama and frustration free, romance! There is no angst or love triangle to pull you hair out over! There is just snarky, witty, banter between the main characters, Cameron and Jack, and a fast, fun, and super-sexy plot.

This is a simple, drama and frustration free, romance! There is no angst or love triangle to pull you hair out over! There is just snarky, witty, banter between the main characters, Cameron and Jack, and a fast, fun, and super-sexy plot.

Cameron is a prosecutor for the Chicago DA and happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. She's staying in a fancy hotel, treating herself to some pampering while her hardwood floors are being re-done. Unfortunately for Cameron, she gets stuck next door to a very amorous couple that keeps her awake with their Viagra induced antics. At the end of all this, we're left with a dead woman, and a Senator for a suspect. Cameron ends up being the only potential witness in a high profile murder case with Jack Pallas, FBI agent, leading the investigation. This is Cameron's worst nightmare because she has a less than friendly history with glowering, but hunky, Agent Hottie, Jack! Don't worry, all this will be explained when you read this story (you must, by the way!).

I loved how well this story developed. You don't want to put this down! The plot is fast-paced and well-thought out, and the dialogue is smart and funny. And let's not forget Jack! Glowering, and darkly handsome, Jack! Who doesn’t lust after a hot, Alpha male in law enforcement?!! Loved this description of him: "a lean, muscular build and a face that was just barley saved from being almost too handsome by that five o'clock shadow." and then this one: "Rugged hotness, sex in a shoulder harness." So, yes, he was pretty much one of my favorite male ~~fantasies~~ characters! Cameron was also a worthy female lead. She was a strong, independent woman with a big heart and a lot of sass! There were so many quotes that had me laughing and sizzling! I laughed about this one:

Purple Hair stopped dusting blush over Cameron's cheeks. "Hold up. Are you talking about the dark-haired guy who came in with you? The one who searched me before I could do your makeup?" Cameron grimaced. "Sorry about that." "Don't be-it was the highlight of my month. That's the guy you're holding out on? Sweetie, you need to grab that stallion and ride him like a cowgirl."

Funny, I just had a vaguely similar conversation with my lovely GR friend, Laura, about cowboys! Haha!

So, if you like romance, with a smart plot, do yourself a favor and pick this one up! You won't be disappointed.

When I added this book to my GR bookshelves, I put it in the "romantic suspense" shelf because what else should I think considering that the hero is an FBI agent and the heroine is an assistant U.S. attorney, right? Julie James isn’t one of my favorite authors for nothing, and I’m feeling pretty bad about doubting her while reading the first part of this book. Because it was rather slow and uneventful. Julie James isn’t one of my favorite authors for nothing, and I’m feeling pretty bad about doubting her while reading the first part of this book. Because it was rather slow and uneventful. Having finished it, I know better and will never doubt you again, Julie. You have my word.

Sure, it started slow, but it was necessary to create a realistic foundation to the rest of the story, providing important info on the two leads (and the killer’s motive) in three flashbacks, the first two also illustrating the start of what I lovingly call “the big misunderstanding”.
Yes, BM is almost a must in some stories to keep things lively and moving forward, often descending into cliché, but not with Ms. James. Nope. It was there, sure, it creating the necessary tensions (and some humorous moments), but it didn’t overwhelm the story with its bulk and it was resolved in a timely manner (which isn’t often the case) and when both BM participants were willing to communicate (which also isn’t often case—actually, this just might be the first “easy” BM in my reading experience).

But let’s go back to pacing. The first half was to set the chess pieces on the board, the second one, even before the resolution to the BM, was to grab that chess board and shake it like mad. Because once the pace picked up and the story started hurling toward the big finish, there was no stopping it. And I loved every minute of it.
For a first venture into suspense, Julie James did a great job.

And now to what Ms. James does best. Characterization. Sheesh, but I loved every single one of the bunch (even the killer had that extra spark for me, but that’s probably because I’m a fan of the author).
Cameron was your typical JJ heroine. Funny, a little self-deprecating, smart, sarcastic...What’s not to love about her. But the hero, Jack Pallas, the brooding, glowering, Alpha fed, was the one who stole the entire show, with his scruff, his muscles, his protective nature, his “hidden” personality, his sense of humor, and his bike. And Cam’s friends and Jack’s partner provided the comic relief.

And another commendation for Julie James. You’ve graduated from sex scenes. Yay! Some fellow reviewers claimed it seemed forced, but I didn’t get that impression. Far from it. It was sexy, sensual, and H-O-T, laced with a pinch of humor, and Jack, of course. :D

This is a pretty lame review for such a great book, but I don’t think anything could do it justice. You’ll just have to read it and experience Jack Pallas on your own. ;)(less)

I loved this book! Enemies-to-Lovers with a fuck-load of sexual tension! Cameron and Jack finally got to the hot lovin' near the end, but ~~I was~~ they were teased and tortured for a very long time. No insta love between these two.

I was also really into the plot, it didn't have much of a mystery and the killer was revealed way earlier than I expected. But there was still some suspense and a lot of laugh-out-loud moments.

PS: There is one MF I enjoyed as much - Space in His Heart by Roxanne St Claire. No MMs that were on par with my 5-star MFs, though.

1ST READING REVIEW/MARCH 2010:
That's 3 out of 3 books from Julie James I've enjoyed. There's a 4th one coming out and she's definitely an auto-buy.

Apart from a small quibble which pulled out of the story a little, and the wedding reception descriptions which I skipped almost entirely, I loved this book about an Asst, U S Attorney who's ear-witness to a murder and the ex-Special Forces, now-FBI Special Agent. SAY crackles with sexual tension and gave me a satisfying HEA without the heroine once engaging in TSTL antics or the sexy, drool-worthy hero resorting to cave-man behaviour.

For the first third of the book, I was happy to enjoy this lighthearted romance with a touch of suspense but the action-suspense built up over time so that overall, I got a nicely-balanced romantic suspense. Still on the lighthearted side, as the previous two were, but Special Agent Jack Pallas, aka 'Agent Hottie' by Cameron's friends, is my favorite. He's not just gorgeous, he's clearly attracted to Cam and even his belief that she caused his career glitch three years ago, he finds himself emotionally entangled, much to the amusement of his side-kick, Wilkins.

There is no complicated plot, no annoying characters and though I skipped all the paragraphs about Amy's wedding, it provided a fitting backdrop to heighten the tension, both the suspense and the sexual. Because SAY is a straightforward story, I'd recommend you not read the reviews that tell you so much there's no need to read the book. If you enjoyed JJ's previous books, you're bound to love this one and love Agent Hottie as much as I did.(less)

I loved it. The interaction between Jack and Cameron makes this an awesome cover to cover read. It's funny, sweet, suspenseful, intense, and steamy. I loved Jack and Cameron. The cover is gorgeous and relevant. Reading this felt like hanging out with a new person who felt like a close friend from the moment you meet her/him. I guess I pretty much loved everything about Something About You. It's also set in Chicago, which I always love to see.

Julie James is easily one of the most well-known authors of chick-flick/contemporary novels, so when I went into Something About You, I was expecting a ton of laughs, a good romance, and had just a tiny seed of doubt in my mind, wondering whether the novel would live up to all the hype. Well, it did. Goodness, did Something About You deliver!

I think what makes this novel such a hit, at least with me, is the joint collaboration of a steamy, sweet, and compelling romance along with an intriguing murder mystery. When we are first introduced to Cameron, the lawyer who is the protagonist of our tale, it's impossible not to fall in love with her endearing voice. Not only is she hilarious, snarky, and full of sass, but her close friendships define her and she truly came alive as the novel progressed.

Yet, while Cameron was a heroine I loved, I couldn't help but fall for Jack - hard. I don't know why, but there's something about a rugged guy with just the perfect amount of stubble that is irresistable. Now, not all guys can pull it off, but the Jack in my mind definitely can! ;) Jack is an interested character, one whose past has been tough and molded him into a solitary individual, yet one who is deeply caring beneath that taciturn exterior. Jack and Cameron have a past that neither of them is particularly fond of, but the undercurrent of chemistry and tension between them is undeniable. I adored their witty banter and their slow road to romance was excellently written. For something that starts out as a purely physical attraction, it definitely turns into something infinitely deeper which I loved.

Nevertheless, Something Like You isn't a perfect novel. It has its cliche moments, but most disappointingly, the murderer is revealed to us at around 25%. While this method worked perfectly in Libba Bray's The Diviners, I would have liked a little more of "the guessing game" before the reader found out about the murderer. Overall though, this tactic definitely worked well into the plot and the collaboration of the mystery and romance was seamlessly woven. With just one novel, Julie James has definitely earned a fan in me and if her other books are anything like this one, I can admit that the hype surrounding her novels is truly well-deserved.

I flew through this book. I read it in one day. For me, that is quite the feat. The story was fun, the characters enigmatic…I just loved it. And after reading this I just have to say that Julie James did it again.

Something About You is a little different from Julie’s other books. This one included a bit of a suspense/mystery. You find out who the bad guy is pretty early on, but it doesn’t stop you from sitting at the edge of your seat because you’re not sure how everything will play out exactly....more I flew through this book. Will Cameron ever know the whole truth? Will Jack ever figure it all out? I liked the little twist to this book. It was very well written, and even though this is a romance novel and you know that Jack and Cameron will end up together in the end, you’re not entirely sure how the rest of the story will pan out. But it still wasn’t so suspenseful that I lost sleep. And for me that’s good, because when I’m reading a contemporary romance, I want to be entertained without suffering from stomach pains.

Cameron is a great heroine. I liked how she was a little different than past leading ladies in Julie’s books. She is definitely career oriented and her job as an Assistant U.S. Attorney is very very important to her, but she still knows the importance of life outside of work. Her best friend is getting married soon, her other best friend is going through a tough patch too and she finds the time to be there for both of them. While still kicking ass at the office of course.

Jack is really fun to read. Rough around the edges, he’s FBI all the way. He sort of said something stupid to the press about Cameron a few years back and it sort of soured their working relationship…and that’s putting it mildly. And just when they were probably going to hook up back then too. Jack has to step in it…and smear it around a little too. I thought it was good how, even when falling in love, Jack never loses his rough edges. That’s part of who he is and I really appreciated how Julie kept him true to himself.

Now, there are two things that really stand out for me in a Julie James book. One, when she writes about her characters’ career, you can tell that she’s done her research or that she’s done the job herself. Whether they are cops or lawyers or whatever, these characters know what they are doing and know what they are talking about. And two, the chemistry between the characters is incredible. And not just the main two, ALL of the characters. The best friends, the co-workers, even the guy at the coffee shop. Everyone just clicks. Not one character seems forced or out of place. I know I can count on those two thing when reading one of Julie’s books, and it was no exception in this one.

Something About You is yet another story filled with endearing main characters, lovely supporting characters, interesting plotting and a happy ending that will curl your toes. But now I have read all of Julie’s books! I don’t have any more waiting for me in my book closet. I am finding that a little sad… But I don’t need to fret too much though since her next book, A Lot Like Love is hitting shelves on March 1st 2011. Woot!

How the heck have I not indulge in her books before? This is just my second Julie James helping and let me tell you, she's got me addicted! So much so, that I downloaded her A Lot Like Love right away.

The appeal of her work comes from the fact that it's got substance. Now, I've never been a crime-stories-loving kind of girl but her books has just enough of it that it didn't distract me from the whole point of the story. This book was such fun! And after reading THE PIPERS SON, I still felt like I was a bit on edge, so this was exactly what I needed.

I'm a big fan of Julie James and she didn't disappoint me with this book. I could not put it down. I'm rather speechless and should probably write this review at another time.

One thing that fascinates me about Julie's book is that although her heroes are not "my type" they are incredible hot, and although I don't want to be friends with the heroine I feel strongly for them. Julie James dedicated “Something About You” to “the jokers in the room next to me at the JW Marriot San Francisco--As you kept me awake with your antics, this is the book I wrote in my head.” I feel like I owe these individuals a debt of gratitude because this book was better than I ever expected it to be. This was a cute read. Julie James will certainly be an auto read for me going forward. However, I did not enjoy it as much as Just The Sexiest Man Alive. I just loved that book.

It was great that she added a little steam to this book. The H and h are very likable characters. The supporting cast of friends round out the fun for sure!

I had a great time reading this one, I just thought I would enjoy it more than what I really did. It was a really great read, I just think it was too focus on the plot and not so much on the romance. Still I definitely will be reading more from this author soon.

This was definitely a guilty pleasures read. But sometimes that's just the right thing.

Despite the fact that Something About You includes a lot of the clichés that can be found in chick-lit

This book is a shining example of a sub-genre that I had all but lost faith in, the contemporary thriller/romance. James manages to bring spice and intrigue to the story without devolving into unbelievable situations or heinously deranged killers. The romance doesn’t really start until 50% through the book and even then it still takes a backseat to the murder plot until 75% into it.

The murderer's POV takes up all of chapter 8 and reveals not only who it is, but also the motivation for the killing. The murderer is given a couple more POV scenes in the middle of the book. So there isn't really a mystery.

Fortunately, I didn't have long to wait. In fact, the longest part about it was sitting in my chair at work knowing the book had arrived that afternoon and was waiting at home for me. Now those are the things that really make the afternoon drag, you know? But I can't complain too much as I did get to curl up at the end of the night knowing that both laughter and love awaited me within the pages of this charming novel.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde has closed the deal on her latest case and is taking a much-needed one-night break at a local luxury hotel. But it turns out she picked the wrong hotel as she is kept up all night by her loudly carousing neighbors. After calling the front desk to complain and peeking out her door when security arrives, Cameron is surprised to see a figure retreating from the room next door. Not long after FBI agents take over the crime scene and Cameron is restricted to her room as the only potential eye-witness. But it isn't until Agent Jack Pallas walks into the room that she's sure things are going to hell in a hand basket. Three years ago she and Agent Pallas worked together on a case to bring down one of the biggest crime rings in Chicago. The case went down in flames and words were exchanged that could not be taken back. Jack's career was almost destroyed and he was transferred out to the boonies to defuse the situation. Now he's back in town and his primary eyewitness is the one woman he hates more than any other.

You can count on a good time with a Julie James book and that's what I love about them. The characters are incredibly likable. Even when they're hating on each other, you can tell that undercurrent of honest connection is going to win out. And, perhaps most likable of all, they don't make the too stupid to forgive move. Don't get me wrong, J.D. comes mighty close in Practice Makes Perfect. Dude, seriously? On no kind of level was that ever going to be a good idea. And yet I still love him at the end. And, honestly, I think we have to chalk this up to them all being essentially good guys. Sure they walk around acting cocky and slightly dangerous (in Jack's case certifiably lethal, actually) but they're at heart good guys with their priorities in the right place and their hearts firmly tethered to our girls'--an immensely endearing quality to this reader. Particularly when the girls are smart, educated, and deserving of a good guy's attentions and affection. It all combines to make me incredibly happy. And in SOMETHING ABOUT YOU we encounter perhaps the most likable of all. Both Cameron and Jack are so dang noble. It's impossible not to like them both from the very beginning. And as their violent dislike isn't actually that at all, but based on a monumental misunderstanding (and no real despicable acts on their parts), I found myself intensely fond of them both right away and it was fun for a change to just watch them remember everything they liked about each other as they worked together to solve the case. As always, James' secondary characters shine and these were possibly my favorites of hers. Cameron's friend Colin and Jack's partner Wilkins are solid and very intent on protecting their friends. Like I said, there's simply nothing not to like. SOMETHING ABOUT YOU is an utterly enjoyable read from cover to cover.(less)

Roarrr ... this book is just SIZZLING and ENTERTAINING and I can kiss it because it's practically one contemporary romance that is managed to get me to finish reading it, without rolling my eyes in disgust. I have been avoiding m/f contemporary romance like a plague for years -- that genre just didn't do it for me anymore, and I was tired with the stories (even from those I considered favorite authors). I practically cut my ties down with it and then I tried to find amusement in other genres (namely m/m romance and urban fantasy). This time though, I feel like I can dip my toes back in, just a bit. Man, did I choose the PERFECT book :).

... This opinion will be long. Beware :)

First, this book is NOT about woman looking for love or planning her wedding or moaning why she is still single in her 30's. THANK GOD!! Instead, Cameron (the heroine) is one independent woman; she's smart, she's strong, she gets spine, that's what she is. She is thrown into the story when she becomes a witness to a murder (by accident) that happens right next to her hotel room. Then she finds out that the FBI agent handling the case is her old nemesis (there is a long story on that, and it's not her fault), Agent Jack Pallas (cue me purring like a cat). I love the way that she's not even thinking about seducing sexy Jack ... though when she does, man, Cameron has Jack on her fingers. It's totally refreshing to read heroine like her.

Second, while Jack has that Alpha quality in him, but he's not that one Neanderthal male, who's so protective that he basically crowds the heroine. Yep, he has scars (physical) but it doesn't make him one of those brooding-emo type of hero either. He's just, well, more down-to-earth, even if he gets the glowering skill right on (cue me writing Jack Pallas next to "glowering" entry on dictionary). He's not portrayed as one of those loner, without friends, please pity me as well. In fact, his friendship with his younger partner, Wilkins, is one of the highlights of this book ... along on how easy he takes tease from his partner or other officers about Cameron.

Third, the supporting characters are wonderful as well. There's Wilkins (as mentioned), and Collin (Cameron's gay friend, ONE POINT on a gay character on mainstream novel), and Amy (another friend of Cameron), even the officers assigned to keep eyes on Cameron (my Gosh, men can be gossipy too, but then, Cameron is talking about underwear, of course they apt to listen :p). I love how Ms. James don't write 'stereotype' casting on them, for example, Collin might be gay, but he's a sport columnist (instead of fashionista), and Cameron doesn't cling to 'love and forever', and Jack doesn't have to act 'sensitive and caring' to win the girl.

And there is a lot of highlights that amuse the hell out of me, most especially the bachelorette party, where it involves underwear, and oh, gosh, I'm chuckling like crazy when I read that part.

The mystery part is weak though ... we get to know the culprit as early as Chapter 8 (around 30% on Kindle). But then again, this is not a romantic suspense and more of contemporary romance. So I'm good.

One 'minus' point for Jack as character though? He doesn't know Gable and Colbert, "It Happened One Night"??? That is a disgrace! *grin*. Cameron should teach him about the wonderful world of classic!!(less)
