This was such a fun book to read. Besides being a great story about a teenage swimmer trying to help a baby whale find his mom and being full of beautifully written descriptions of the ocean and creatures that live in it, it is also full of little chunks of wisdom.

"Sometimes...the important things take time, sometimes they don't happen all at once, sometimes answers come out of time and struggle, and learning. Sometimes you just have to try again in a different way."

Review from Publishers Weekly
On a clear California morning when Cox (Swimming to Antarctica) was 17 years old, she had an unusual experience that stayed with her for 30 years, creating a spiritual foundation for her personal and professional success. In this slim and crisp memoir, Cox details a morning swim off the coast of California that took an unexpected turn: returning to shore, she discovered that she was being followed by a baby gray whale that had been separated from its mother. As Cox...more

Years ago, Lynne was up early for her morning workout in the Pacific and finds herself being followed by a baby gray whale, separated from its mother. So, she and several others in the community set out to reunite Grayson (the baby gray) with his mother. Most of the story details the rare and unexpected life she finds deep in the ocean while searching for the mother whale.

Unfortunately, I didn't think the story lived up to all of the rave reviews I got before I picked it up. Her encount...more

If you are entrigued by whales and all other sea life, this is a great read. If you are entrigued by the idea of interspecies communication, and the mother/child bond that transcends species, this is a great read, too. Also, if you like books about people who excel at their sport (ocean swimming! At age 17!) and still find ways to challenge themselves, this is also a great book for you to read, too.

If, however, you don't like a lot of description, you will find yourself skimming, as I did. I...more

This short book tells the simple story of a teenage competitive swimmer's morning workout in the Pacific. The swimmer, also the author, discovers that a baby gray whale has become separated from his mother and has been following her during her open water laps.

The real pleasure of this book are the descriptions of swimming in the ocean with sea life teeming all around. The author describes stepping gingerly through a favorite stingray hangout, gliding through schools of anchovy and witnessi...more

I loved this book. It's a quick read and a happy story. Lynne Cox is an ocean swimmer. At 15 she swam the English Channel. At 17 while working out off the coast of California in the very early morning hours she has an encounter with a baby whale. It's an amazing and magical experience that had be smiling from ear to ear as I read.

In addition to a great story I was also taken with Lynne's maturity, dedication, and passion for swimming, as well as her knowledge and appreciation of the ocean an...more

A cute story, based on events that happened to the author when she was a teenager swimming off the coast of California. During an early morning swim, she comes across a baby Gray Whale (Grayson), who has been separated from his mother. The author makes the choice to help the whale find its mother in the vast ocean. The story was a little longer than it needed to be; with a lot of cliches. The author does an excellent job describing the ocean life that she witnesses. It made me really want t...more

This true story chronicles the author's amazing encounter (encompassing several hours) with a baby gray whale while swimming off the pier at Seal Beach.

I didn't feel entirely "into" this book until near the end. Though originally written and intended for adults, it seemed to me to target a young adult/teen audience. Grayson, the baby whale took far too long to make an appearance, but once he did, I was captivated. The author does a remarkably good job at conveying the though...more

I had mixed feelings about this surprising story. I can see children finding this short tale of a life-changing encounter inspiring and uplifting - the epilogue was wonderful and gave a taste of that impact on elementary school classes and others. I know that I was all set to dig out my goggles and go for a swim the minute I clapped the book shut!

The writing style, however, left something to be desired. While the author encountered a multitude of sea creatures along her journey, she relied f...more

This is a great recommendation for someone who needs a short and quick read. My children were very interested in this and the outcome. They enjoyed it when I read descriptions of the dolphins, bat rays and other wildlife. They were amazed that the whale smiled at Lynne and let her touch it.

A long distance swimmer discovers an orphaned baby whale while out in the ocean during a workout and works to reunite it with its mom with some help. It makes you wonder when you will have to step out ...more

This book wasn't any Moby Dick by any means....I would say more like an adult version of "finding nemo" or maybe "finding grayson's mom". Luckily, I read it in about 1 hour, so I didn't have a chance to really decide I didn't enjoy it. The quick chapters kept me involved, and I think if you love the ocean and then you will enjoy reading about all her encounters, but it's pretty surface as far as theme....I think she tries to be really deep about the motives, but I'm not going...more

This was a fast, easy read - the key word being easy. It was enjoyable, and I flew through it in about 3 1/2 hours on a flight, but I couldn't help but feel it was written the way a child might write a novel. Very simple language, very obvious and intentional descriptors. And such an extraordinary series of experiences over the course of a few short hours during which the story takes place, that it's often difficult to believe it's not all a little exaggerated. But, at the end of it all, it's a ...more

When she was 17 years old, long distance swimmer Lynne Cox found her morning workout interrupted by the presence of a baby gray whale. The baby whale was lost from its mother and began to follow Lynne as she swam. Lynne couldn't swim for shore for fear that the whale would follow her and beach itself. This account tells of all her hopes and fears as she swam beside "Grayson" that morning. In great detail, Lynne describes the ocean as it changed that morning and all the wildlife she saw...more

Ever think it would be cool to swim with a whale? Me too! In this book, Lynn Cox chronicles her experience training to swim the Catelina Channel and finding herself being followed by a lost baby Gray Whale. In this true story, Lynn must attempt to reunite the whale with its mother before it starves or drowns, or before she does the same.

A very nice story about an amazing interaction between woman and whale not soon to be forgotten. This is one of the most unique experiences I have ever read...more

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED! I so needed to read such an uplifting story like this. I forgot how amazing animals can be. I mean I didn't forget forget, but I forgot the amount of unspoken connected divine love they can show. I can't wait to make my neice read this. Even though this book is written for adults, I think it would have such a great impact on young adults and she included so many analogies for great life lessons. It was a nice reminder for what the power of thought can do and how positi...more

This story was simply amazing!

Swimming in the California ocean, the author encounters a baby whale and tries to help him find his mother. She shares her experience through descriptive and detailed narrative, which makes you feel like you are right there in the water with her!

That is definately a good thing since I'm soooo scared of deep water!

The writing is clear and simple -- this could be a children's book -- but the subjects are profound: pushing through fear, generosity, listening to your instincts, staying curious and open to what is happening instead of rigid, and the experience of human-animal communication and relationship. I found it poignant. Also - beautiful descriptions of swimming and the life of the sea. As a meditator, I found many analogues of the experience of practicing meditation with her practice of swimming.

Although Cox's style is extremely simplistic and sometimes cliche, it is a simplistic beauty and such a touching story that I enjoyed it tremendously. For anyone who enjoys swimming or delights in the ocean, this book is a great read. Some readers may not enjoy the choppiness of the writing or the constant wandering off onto side comments and interludes, however my mind works that way, so I found it quite captivating. It's a pretty quick read, so it's not as if it's a commitment.

Grayson is a short, sweet, easy reading book about a young expert ocean swimmer (the author) who encounters, unknowingly at the time, a mother gray whale, and a baby whale who has gotten separated from its mother while training in the Long Beach Harbor in California. The author's quest is to help the baby whale, which she has named "Grayson" find his mother.
This book would be great to share with upper grade elemetary students, junior high, and high school.

I read this on the way back from California this week. It's hard to believe the author, at 17 years old, encountered all the wonderful sea life that she did during the swim she narrates. I fell in love with the baby whale, Grayson, and wondered how in the world anyone could stalk and kill these gorgeous, brilliant creatures. It was a moving, fun, fast read. She weaves in fortune-cookie-like commentaries on life, which being the cheese-head that I am, I enjoyed.
