V Valentine, the insuppressible anti-hero from VEGAN VIRGIN VALENTINE, is back in a story about her own growing up and falling into love. All her life, V has flitted from one boy to the next at breakneck speed, never stopping to allow any possible emotions to cling to her. Then one fateful hockey game she crosses paths with Sam. Somehow things with him are different.
Could it be that Sam is V’s first real boyfriend? V isn’t so sure. And given her own mother’s history with numerous men, More...

V has had a pretty messed up life. Aimee – her mother – spent the first seventeen years of V’s life dragging her from one town to the next in search of love. But Aimee isn’t into the long-term commitment thing, and her and V were always running from Aimee’s romantic mistakes. Consequently, V hasn’t had any stability and she hasn’t made any real friends. But that was all before Brockport, before Aimee decided V would be better off living with her grandparents. Brockport brings with it a family ki

Wow. That was my first reaction to this book. I didn’t realize that today’s YA involves such powerful storylines that are this masterfully done. (Guess I’ve been reading too much Gossip Girl, Private, and the like—while enjoyable, they’re nothing like this!) Throughout Guyaholic, I felt I was right there with V to experience all her ups and downs.

In Guyaholic we left off with V starting her road trip to San Antonio, Texas. The first night she gets lost and ends up staying in a yucky hotel room. The next night she ends up in Eerie and decides to stay with her friend from works brother and his family, she hooks up with his son Nate but Sam is still on her mind. Next she ends up staying with her aunt Mara who is only a year older than her and they talk about Sam and V’s mom. Then she stays with old friends in Missouri for a week while fina

The book was reasonably deep for being so short. The only thing I didn't really like was that it didn't go into depth about V and Sam's relationship. I mean, one page he was bringing her bread, the next page said they'd been together for 3 months. A lot of the book was thrown out of chronological order. In some places, it added to the overall effect. In other places it was just confusing.
But I was kind of relieved that V never made things perfect with her mom. I was terrified that Ma More...

When I finished Vegan, Virgin, Valentine I didn't realize there was a sequel. But I saw there was on Goodreads and that it was available at my library, so I picked it up. Then, I didn't realize it was about V, not Mara. I wasn't sure if I'd like it since I didn't really like V in the first book, but since it was short I figured I'd give it a shot.

The way V throws men around is comical. The main character in this book goes through men like candy. But, when she is faced with a man she actually wants to stay with, she does not know what to do. She is used to dumping a guy before she can get too emotionally attached to the relationship. Just like her mother does.
The relationship between V and her mother, Amy, is strained and awkward. V wants to be more like her Mom by going through do many guys, but her desperate actions are not gettin More...

This book was kind of a let-down after Vegan Virgin Valentine. I imagined seeing most of the old characters brought in, along with new ones. James, one of my favorite characters, was only brought in once! Mara was only seen for a few days. It didn't have as much depth as VVV, althogh it was still a great story. I loved V's new boyfriend, Sam, and the hockeypuck incident that changed her lifestyle of junping around to a solid life. This is until she gets wasted at a party and commits one of the b

V(nickname for her long birth name of Vivienne Valentine) has been Miss Like Them to Leave Them since her flaky mother, Aimee, dropped her off to stay with her grandparents a year ago so that said mother could got to Costa Rica. Actually, she started her reign as the "queen of meaningless hook-ups" when she was fourteen.

So far in my book i am more then half way through and the book. It is just getting more and more better as i read! Where i am at the book so far is that V is going on a road trip before summer ends to her mom's house. She hasn't saw her mother for about 2 years, ever since she shipped her off to her grandparents house when she left with her new boyfriend to Texas. Mean her mom missed her walk down for graduation, her mom invited her to go down to Texas to run away from her troubles..such as Sam.

EIGHT CHAPTERS IN: All I can say is...Guyaholic. Is. HILARIOUS. There's some REALLY REALLY sad/emotional parts in it. But it is absolutely hilarious. A very well written book.
FINISHED WITH BOOK: Wow. Incredible. VERY FUNNY at certain times but at other times, it gets very emotional and very intense. A GGGRRREATTTT book. A MUST READ.
I would recommend this book to MATURE teenagers. Why? Well, there's lots of stuff in there that wouldn't be appropriate for IMMATURE teens to read. Also More...

OMG - as if I didn't have enough reason to love Carolyn Mackler, she goes and writes this book. I wanted to send this to a dozen girls to read!! It's overwhelming how well Mackler can write a character that most girls would love to hate (she hooks up with guys, is attractive, a good actor, etc., most people would remember V from Vegan, Virgin, Valentine as Mara's foil) but makes her so understandable and sympathetic so that you understand why she has such low self-esteem. The therapy session t

The ending left me hanging!!!!! I wish there was more to it than leaving it like that. so I'm rating it 4 for the unsatisfied ending :P
oh wells, I liked V's version better than Mara's. I could actually feel V and Sam's chemistry unlike James and Mara's that kinda feel like it's forced. And yea, I kinda see it coming that <spoiler> Mara and James would break up. Like I said, they just didn't have the chemistry. </spoiler> I would love love to read more about V and Sam! Seq More...

the theme of this book is not to through yourself out there too much even when going through the hard times, that doesnt mean that its okay for one to run their body with no brain. V, the main character has jumped from guy to guy. She is never single and her longest relation ship was 2 weeks.. that all way until she met sam. things were going great until sam wanted to get serious and be officially gf and bf. She keeps changing the subject when ever he mentions getting serious because she scared

Well i have just start reading this book. The reason that i wanted to read this book, was because of the title. Guy a holic, this is something i love and it seem like the main chacter did too. So i thought we would have some things in common, like how we do boys and how far we let them get to our head , our how long we keep them around.
V is the main chacter right now and as i can see we do have things in . She dosent go out the house looking a mess and even though she has a "man" More...

Title Thoughts: I love it and it fits.
Cover Thoughts: Appealing wise, I don't particularly like it. However, it is prefect for the book. We have NY license plates, thosee strappy heels, and the car.
WARNINGS: As you can tell from the synopsis, hookups are involved but vaguely described, if any.
Let me just go ahead and throw this out there. I most definitely will be reading more by Carolyn Mackler. I was consumed in V's life and everything that was happening with her More...

I should have realized with a book entitled Guyaholic that I'd be getting a lot of sex in the story but I thought Young Adult novels had certain lines they didn't cross. It seems those lines have shifted since I was reading Young Adult novels. (Sarah, don't let the girls read books from the library until you have vetted them first!) However, the character growth and storyline of this novel was very good. V is living with her grandparents because her flighty mother thought it would be good for he

I remember reading the first book, but obviously that one didn’t make much of an impression on me, otherwise I would remember the characters of Mara and James, which I don’t. As well, I don’t remember the characters from the other book Carolyn Mackler wrote, even though she won an award for it. I’m a sucker for awards, so you’d think I’d noticed. Huh. I’m considering re-reading The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things.

The title makes this book sound more frivolous than it is, really, and is probably the reason I have to put this on my "guilty" shelf. Ok, so the main character, V, sees guys as potential hookups rather than people or relationships, but until she meets Sam, the feeling is usually mutual.
Sam wants a real relationship, not just sex. He wants to be her boyfriend and go to the prom. Even though V recognizes that Sam is different (when he kisses her for the first time she think More...

V's conquests have an expiration date of about 2 weeks. She's always chasing a new guy. She loves 'em and leaves 'em. So why is it that Sam has stuck around for three whole months? All V has ever known has been boucing around different places while her mom goes from guy to guy. Now that V's living with her grandparents, getting into college, and dating Sam, things can finally change... Until V does something to mess everything up. It'll take more than she knows to fix everything... but maybe eve

My second Carolyn Mackler and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. Mackler takes a scenario that could be a "problem novel," but her characters are so real and heart-felt it ends up deeply moving. V is a high school senior who never gets serious with any guy until she finally falls for Sam, only to ruin it all. Her first person narration is believable and honest and her voyage to self-understanding brought a few tears to my eyes without being maudlin.

It's a bit humiliating to admit I read a book with this title. Still, I took a desperate trip to the library today (still on a search for cheerful books) and remembered how much I love Carolyn Mackler. This was the only book of hers they had. I swear.
Despite the bad title, it was wonderful. I have great respect for the way Mackler treats her heroines and for her meaty plots. For those who love Dessen, you must give Mackler a shot.

This book started out great, as the reader sees V fall for a guy. But most of the book was about her journey across the united states, where I would have preferred her to just stay in New York and sort out the break up there. It gets boring to read about gas stations and motels after a while. I hoped there would be more interaction between V and the guys she falls for, because it was lacking in romance and dialogue between her and Sam.

Eh. For all I liked about this book, I just find Mackler a little grating anymore. Also, seriously, I am tired of girls in high school (or just out of) needing to settle down with a dude to be maturing at the right rate. I'm not saying that's exactly what went on in this book (and I'm glad V's actions were actually addressed and explored) but I feel that thought is a bit at the heart of this.

In this sequel to Vegan Virgin Valentine, Mara is off at college and V is the narrator. She is fairly settled, having spent her senior year starring in several plays and having an almost relationship with dream-guy Sam (gorgeous, sensitive, and loves to bake bread).
However, when her mom blows off V's graduation ceremony, Vtakes it hard. She feels like if her mom doesn't love her, there's no way that anyone else can either. So she cheats on Sam at a party and breaks his heart. She More...
